The seriousness of Bang's abortion disease in Utah has made it necessary to promote more definite plans toward its control and eradication. The economic losses encountered are brought about not only through the loss of the calves but by the lessened milk production and lessened sale value of the animals themselves. Breeding efficiency is lower and such cows are more subject to udder infections. Many states now require that cattle shipped into them be negative to the abortion test; indications are that more states will adopt similar regulations. San Juan County, located in the southeast corner of the state, has a dry-farm area of approximately 600,000 acres extending from Monticello 26 miles south to Blanding and 6 miles north to Peter's Hill and stretching from the Blue Mountains east 30 miles to the Colorado line. One-fourth to one-third of this area is covered with timber consisting mainly of pinion pine, oak brush, and juniper commonly called cedar. Utah's alfalfa-seed crop is of far-reaching importance. Since 1919, the growing of this crop has been a major industry in western Millard County and in that part of the Uintah Basin situated in Utah. These places are two of the relatively few large areas in the United States peculiarly adapted by climate for the successful growing of alfalfa-seed. As a cash crop, alfalfa-seed has a high commercial value. It is also the basis of the state's alfalfa hay crop, which in turn constitutes the foundation of Utah's livestock industry. Present-day plant breeding, on the foundation made many years ago, has achieved important scientific and economic results. By means of introductions and selections, superior strains such as Turkey and Kanred have been obtained. Through hybridization new combinations of characters result, combining desirable characters of different plant types in a single individual. In this program, wheat hybridization has occupied a worthy place.

Each year a number of wheat crosses are made at the Utah Experiment Station, the main purpose of which is to develop superior strains of wheat. Such an economic program is aided and hastened by studies in genetic behavior. …

The estimated area of muck or peat soil in Utah is approximately 21,000 acres. The muck occurs in many valleys of Utah. The largest areas are in the Sanpete and Utah Lake Valleys. The area in the former is estimated at 6500 acres and the Utah Valley area at 9000 acres; the other areas, all more or less significant in size, are scattered throughout the state.

The agricultural problems of the Carbon County Experimental Farm and of the locality which it serves are distinctly different from those of most of the farming localities of Utah. The low and uncertain winter rainfall, the comparative "rawness" of the soils, together with their almost infinite stickiness when wet, and the presence of considerable alkali throughout their body makes them peculiarly sensitive to time and manner of treatment and causes them to absorb water slowly and to erode readily.

The major portion of the annual precipitation in the semi-arid west falls as snow. It piles up in the mountains and forms the main source of the water in the creeks and rivers draining the mountainous areas. Some of these streams flow the year around while others and intermittent, flowing only as long as the snow in the mountains lasts. The water-supply for irrigation, power development, and municipal purposes is derived largely from winter snows. For a number of years many tons of sprayed or dusted hay have been fed successfully to livestock by stockmen interested in controlling the alfalfa weevil; nevertheless. the supposed cases of poisoning that have been reported naturally have caused concern among feeders.

Further confusion on this question has resulted from reports on studies designed to determine the effect of lead arsenate instead of calcium arsenate.

Utah is naturally an arid state with precipitation varying from 3.71 inches at Wendover, located in the vast desert region on the western border, to more than 40 inches on some of the mountain ranges. Desert and mountain areas and other untillable land combined total about 95 per cent of Utah's land area. The remaining 5 per cent constitutes all the land which will yield to cultivation either by irrigation or by dry-farming.

During the last 20 years there has been a marked change in the type of hogs from the short-legged, wide-bodied or "hot-blood" type to a longer, somewhat more narrow-bodied, "leggier" type. For development of size in hogs they must have (1) length and depth of body, (2) length of leg, and (3) large but not coarse bones. Coccidiosis is a highly contagious disease of chickens and other fowls which is widespread and destructive, especially to half-grown chickens. The heaviest losses occur in chicks from 2 to 10 weeks of age. Just prior to and during their first laying season, pullets sometimes become affected with the disease in a chronic form. The cause is a microscopic protozoan parasite, the oocyst form of which is present in the droppings of diseased birds in large numbers. At least three species of the parasite have been recognized in fowls. The severity of the outbreak is thought to be determined by the …

In these sections of the state various natural conditions generally have been favorable for seed production. Too much importance cannot be given to the number and kind of calves raised. The life of an average cow is 6.5 years. To maintain the present number of cows in Utah about 15,385 heifer calves should be raised annually. One-half of all calves born are males and are usually disposed of in a few weeks; the other 50 per cent are females from which selection must be made to maintain the herds. In many parts of Utah the number of dairy cows should be increased and probably the best way to accomplish this is to raise carefully selected calves.

Chlorosis is a disease of plants, the characteristic symptom of which is the yellowing of the leaves. The disease is of sporadic but widespread distribution in Utah and the aggregate losses caused by it are undoubtedly greater than those of any other one disease. Not only are many plants killed, or weakened to such an extent that only inferior crops are produced, but many areas of land which might otherwise support profitable orchards have been abandoned or planted to other crops because of the disease.

Perennial weeds have retarded agricultural progress, since their first appearance in cultivated fields. They have grown and survived the destructive efforts of the farmer and agricultural scientist, over a great period of time. Many farmers have become discouraged and much valuable land has lain idle because of this wasteful weed persistence.

These dismal consequences have stimulated constant effort at experimental stations to discover more effective methods of battling the pest. The use of chemicals has been one of the most prominent weapons and, of the most recent chemicals tried, the chlorates are the most promising.
