Potatoes were the first crop planted in Utah. In July 1847, the Mormon pioneers turned the water from City Creek over the parched land near what is now the center of Salt Lake City. The ground was then broken and sown at once to potatoes. Only a small yield was obtained but this helped materially to eke out the meagre food supply until the harvest of 1848. During the several hard years that followed potatoes were among the most important foods for the pioneer settlers. Since then they have held a prominent place in the agriculture of the state.

During sugar-beet harvest the farmer has two big opportunities to increase his income from the beet crop. No great amount of extra labor is entailed in either case, and yet the profits are written in large figures. To neglect getting the most from beets at harvest time after a toilsome and expensive production seems wasteful. Farmers are urged to give full consideration to these two phases of beet harvest: (1) The making of beet-top silage from fresh beet tops. Large yields of good quality feed may thus be secured. There is quite a general belief among millers, bakers, and the laity that flour improves on ageing. However, there is no definite information as to the time requisite for this improvement nor whether it reaches a maximum and then deteriorates. The information is no more exact as to the changes which occur during the ageing process or the conditions which govern them. We have found no reference in the literature where bad effects have resulted from storage, provided a highly-milled, sound flour is stored in dry, well-ventilated rooms free from odors (20). Insects destroy many sugar-beets in Utah. In some years the incomes of the farmers of the state are greatly reduced because of the ravages of these pests. This circular has been written in the hope that the more important information about the insect pests of this valuable crop may be more readily available to the beet growers of the state.

The insects treated in this paper are grouped under two main heads. In the first division are included those insects affecting the tops or foliage of the beet. In the second division are those insects that feed on the roots.

Cache County Water Conservation District No. 1 lies on the west side of the valley about eight miles from and a little northwest of Logan, Cache County, Utah. Figure 1 shows the location of the project with respect to Salt Lake, Ogden, Brigham City, Logan, and Cache County.
