Restructuring Intellectual Property Jurisdictions Post-Brexit: Strategic Considerations For The Eu And Britain, Alexandra George
Restructuring Intellectual Property Jurisdictions Post-Brexit: Strategic Considerations For The Eu And Britain, Alexandra George
Brooklyn Journal of International Law
Britain’s decision to “Brexit” from the European Union has caused great uncertainty and justified concern with respect to intellectual property laws and investments. Post-Brexit arrangements between the European Union and Britain have not yet been determined, and it is unclear whether these will be settled with respect to intellectual property law before Brexit is due to take effect in 2019. With intellectual property intensive industries accounting for 88 percent of EU imports and 90 percent of EU exports, British-EU intellectual property arrangements are the subject of intense interest worldwide as intellectual property owners and users speculate as to the likely …

Where We're Going, We'll Need Roads! Building The Bridge To The Future: Public-Private Partnerships For Future Border Infrastructure Development, Jessica R. Lesnau
Texas A&M Law Review
In a world where global economies are increasingly interdependent, the United States, and its North American counterparts, Canada and Mexico, are booming sources of international trade. Now, more than ever, global competitiveness necessitates developments in U.S. infrastructure, especially at major border crossings where congestion and poor infrastructure create bottlenecks interfering with the free movement of goods. Questions pertaining to international border crossings circle the debate at the most crucial international border crossing in North America: the Ambassador Bridge, which spans the Detroit River between Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario. A legal battle rages over the proposed construction of a new …

The Manufacturing And Trafficking Of Narcotics: An Overview Of Global Laws, 50 J. Marshall L. Rev. 813 (2017), Waseem Ahmad Qureshi
UIC Law Review
This paper will focus mainly on the use, manufacturing, trafficking, and adverse effects of narcotic drugs. In addition, the major laws against the manufacturing, use, and trafficking of drugs will also be discussed, and the successes and hurdles in preventing the trafficking, use, and manufacturing of narcotic drugs will also be evaluated. Strictly curbing the manufacturing and trafficking of narcotic drugs can reduce the spread of this abhorrence in society.
Introduction To Symposium On Industry Associations In Transnational Legal Ordering, Melissa (M.J.) Durkee, Gregory Shaffer
Introduction To Symposium On Industry Associations In Transnational Legal Ordering, Melissa (M.J.) Durkee, Gregory Shaffer
Scholarship@WashULaw
As globalization blurs borders and business operates across them, industry associations transpose their political activities to the global level, organizing transnationally, pursuing new sites of influence, and seeking harmonization. Their efforts affect the content of international legal norms, both public and private. This short essay introduces a symposium issue of AJIL Unbound that addresses the roles and mechanisms through which industry associations influence and shape law as part of transnational legal processes, potentially giving rise to transnational legal orders.

Beyond Trade Deals: Charting A Post-Brexit Course For Uk Investment Treaties, Lise Johnson, Lorenzo Cotula
Beyond Trade Deals: Charting A Post-Brexit Course For Uk Investment Treaties, Lise Johnson, Lorenzo Cotula
Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment Staff Publications
The Brexit referendum has raised questions about the future terms of the United Kingdom’s engagement with the world economy. While a debate over the UK’s future approach to trade deals has already begun, a similar discussion has yet to develop on the treaties that govern foreign investment. As this briefing note by Lorenzo Cotula of the International Institute for Environment and Development, and Lise Johnson of CCSI highlights, the stakes are high: ill-designed treaties could leave the UK excessively exposed to legal claims by foreign companies and could fail to address relevant economic, social and environmental challenges. While meaningful negotiations …

Moving Towards Harmonization Of The Food Safety Standards: Role Of The Tpp And Ttip Agreements, Ksenia A. Petrovets
Journal of Food Law & Policy
We are now less dependent on locally available food resources that we have ever been. The continuing industrialization of food production, the advancement in technologies and the rapid development of supply chains granted us the luxury of immediate access to a variety of products originating from local supermarkets all over the world. This, along with the greater level of food production industrialization, inevitably comes the rise of related food safety risks. Because of the enlargement of producing operations, an emerging safety threat in one place may result in a foodborne illness outbreak thousands of miles away from its place of …

2016 China Food Law Update, Michael T. Roberts, Ching-Fu Lin
Journal of Food Law & Policy
This update of China food law builds on a unique feature for the Journal of Food Law & Policy that has been provided since the Journal's inception - separate food law updates for both the United States and European Union. "Recognizing the globalness of the modem food system, these updates have served an invaluable role in keeping scholars and practitioners abreast of the world's leading food regulatory systems." China's emergence as a developed, modem food regulatory system with the potential of being a leading food regulatory system makes sense given its position as a world economic powerhouse. China's role in …
