An environmental law professor at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law has been elected to the board of directors of a national conservation organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of imperiled species and their habitats in North America.

Rob Fischman, the George P. Smith, II Distinguished Professor of Law and an adjunct professor at the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, was elected to the Defenders of Wildlife board on Tuesday, May 21.

The Indiana University Maurer School of Law will add four members to its prestigious Academy of Law Alumni Fellows this April. Terry Dworkin ’75, Fred Logan ’77, Holiday “Holly” McKiernan ’83, and Luis Felipe Sanchez ’76 will receive the highest honor the Law School can bestow on its alumni when they are inducted April 14 in a ceremony inside the Indiana Memorial Union.

An Indianapolis native, Maurer graduated from North Central High School and received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from University of Colorado. Upon receiving an invitation to attend the 1957 dedication festivities for the newly built law building, Class of 1893 alum Luther M. Grimes hand wrote a response that is one part RSVP and one part trip down memory lane.

He said that he was regretfully unable to attend; at 87 1/2 years it was "on account of age" that he couldn't travel from his Iowa home. He considered that he may have been among the oldest living Indiana University alums, and was, with certainty, the last surviving member of his law class.
