We would like to extend our appreciation to the Law School Student Senate and the Nonnes-Rom Challenge fund for their financial support, to the Law School Copy Center for its technical support, and to Prof. Ronald Monn and Adam Chester for their counsel on copyright issues. We thank you, our readers, for your interest.

The Death Of A Friendly Critic, James J. White
The Death Of A Friendly Critic, James J. White
Articles
Our colleague, Andy Watson, died April 2. Andy was one of the handful of preeminent law professor/psychiatrists. In that role he wrote dozens of articles and several important books, including Psychiatry for Lawyers, a widely used text. I do not write to remind us of his scholarly work, of his strength as a clinical and classroom teacher, or of his prominence as a forensic psychiatrist. I write to remind us of his powerful criticism of our teaching. On the occasion of his death, it is right to recognize his influence on the law school curriculum and to consider whether his …

In clinic, students get a glance at the lawyer they will be someday. They gain confidence that, indeed, they will be a "good" lawyer. They understand the context in which their classroom learning will be applied. In short, they are able to integrate their law school experience.

Developing A Child Advocacy Law Clinic: A Law School Clinical Legal Education Opportunity, Donald N. Duquette
Developing A Child Advocacy Law Clinic: A Law School Clinical Legal Education Opportunity, Donald N. Duquette
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Clinical legal education has become an accepted and integral complement to traditional law school curricula. Professor Duquette argues that clinical education is uniquely able to integrate the teaching of practical skills and legal doctrine, elevating students' understanding of both. Duquette maintains that a child advocacy law clinic can teach a broad range of practical skill benefit the hosting law school by providing an opportunity for interdisciplinary education as well as a public relations benefit, while simultaneously serving an important need in most communities for quality representation of all parties in child abuse and neglect cases. Most importantly, participation in a …

This is the third year of Dicta, the law school's literary journal and a child of the vision of two 1996 graduates, Miles Yanick and Matt Morris. We hope that this creative forum will continue to grow and to flourish, enriching the law school community by offering a spectrum of poetry, fiction, essays, photography, and artwork. The editors faced a difficult task again this year as we again received more material than we could publish. We continued the policy of considering all submissions anonymously. This final product reflects the often conflicting views of the editors who tried to select a …

Eye On The World, Jose E. Alvarez, Virginia A. Gordan
Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)
In a special section coinciding with the International Reunion of Law School graduates, Law School graduates who are deeply involved in the globalization of legal practice respond to the question, "If you could leap ahead 10 years, how do you think what you are doing now will change?" And in a thought-provoking prologue, Professor of Law Jose Alvarez and Assistant Dean for International Programs Virginia A. Gordan consider the historical - and historic - impact of Law School graduates from overseas on the legal profession.

The Michigan Law Quadrangle: Architecture And Origins, Kathryn Horste
About the Buildings
The Michigan Law Quadrangle: Architecture and Origins is intended to combine elements of a history and a guidebook. For those students, alumni, and visitors to Ann Arbor who have long admired the sequestered spaces and the noble corridors ofthe Quadrangle, the book is meant to answer some ofthe many questions that come to mind about its historical styles and the significance of its rich decorations, as well as to serve as a ready source book for those encountering the Quadrangle for the first time. Chapters 2 and 3 recount the history of the Quadrangle as a construction project and the …
