Change And Continuity In Legal Education, Roger C. Cramton
Change And Continuity In Legal Education, Roger C. Cramton
Michigan Law Review
Within this maelstrom of accelerating change, the American law school remains, by comparison, an island of stability. Change there has been; one of the purposes of this piece is to chronicle some major recent changes. But in broad outline the structure, method, and content of American legal education has remained remarkably untouched. Whether this demonstrates that American legal education is remarkably flexible in its adaptation to a changing legal environment or that it is irrelevant to social change, I leave to the reader.

What Makes A Law School Great?, Maxwell Cohen
What Makes A Law School Great?, Maxwell Cohen
Dalhousie Law Journal
It is very humbling to try and match the amusing candor and informed wisdom of Professor Willis Reese, and so I will try to use his anecdotal insights only as a launching pad for my long repressed ambivalence about law schools and legal education. On the whole, Professor Reese comes down on the side of student brains as against the prepared onslaught of the faculty. Nothing can harm the good student and very little can be expected to help him since he often is abler than the teacher and even more often, believes it. Despite Professor Reese's affluent infrastructure - …

In addressing the subject of "reverse discrimination," I want to caution at the outset against permitting the use of the word "discrimination" to prejudice consideration of the subject. "Discrimination" has, in recent years, become a bad word. It tends to be used as a shorthand for "unjustifiably unequal treatment." In its original and still proper meaning, however, the word is quite neutral. Discrimination merely means differentiation. It comes from a Latin word that means "to distinguish." Accordingly, when we discriminate-i.e., when we differentiate or distinguish-among people, the propriety of our action depends upon the reasons that we have acted as …

Prefatory Remark, Robert L. Bogomolny
Cleveland State Law Review
It is the legacy of CLEPR that the continuation of clinical legal education is now assured despite the financial hard times apparently facing the nation's law schools. Some years from now, people will review the period of development of the clinical movement in the United States and find it an example where foundation money guided by effective leadership helped facilitate a major development in law schools in the United States.
Why Don't Law Schools Teach Law Students How To Try Law Suits, Edward J. Devitt
Why Don't Law Schools Teach Law Students How To Try Law Suits, Edward J. Devitt
Cleveland State Law Review
As chairman of the Devitt Committee I was exposed to a wide range of views concerning the issue of the quality of trial advocacy in this country's courts. That experience made apparent the seriousness of the problem of inadequate trial advocacy and the necessity for appropriate remedies. The cure for this lies primarily with the law schools. What is needed is a fundamental change in attitude among American law schools. This commentary will establish that these pragmatic views have the support of logic, history and the available hard evidence.
