Peasants, Tanners, And Psychiatrists: Using Films To Teach Comparative Law, Joseph W. Dellapenna

Working Paper Series

Films have proven to be a useful teaching tool for a course on Comparative Law. The films serve to introduce the class to the look and feel of legal proceedings from selected foreign legal systems and to illustrate particular aspects of how these legal proceedings differ from our own. The article summarizes the results of more than 10 years of experience in using films. It will be of interest to others who teach Comparative Law and also to lawyers, judges, and students who want a video means of oriented themselves to foreign legal traditions. Evaluating The Skills Curriculum: Challenges And Opportunities For Law Schools, Harriet N. Katz

Mercer Law Review

Law schools have compelling reasons to begin thoroughly reviewing their skills curriculum. Three new publications emphasize that preparing students for practice as competent and ethical lawyers is the central mission of legal education and scrutinize methods for achieving that goal. A new ABA Standard for Accreditation (the "Standard" or "Standard 302"), revised in 2005 to mandate skills education for every law student, is now being applied at law school reaccreditation reviews.

Teaching Rights Of Publicity: Blending Copyright And Trademark, Common Law And Statutes, And Domestic And Foreign Law, David Welkowitz, Tyler Ochoa

The purpose of this Article is to explain why we believe that rights of publicity should be taught as a stand-alone course, why we believe that a course in comparative rights of publicity is worthwhile as a stand-alone course, and to explain some of the challenges and opportunities that the course presents. Ultimately, we hope to encourage and persuade more of our colleagues at other schools to begin to offer rights of publicity as a separate course.

This paper deals with the definition and implications of globalism generally and for African interests in particular. Its focus is on globalism as a cluster of social, economic, and political forces contesting for the controlling paradigm of international relations and international law. The article underscores the general issue of globalism's impact on the well-being of the international community. It also considers the impact of globalism on the U.N. Charter, and, in particular, the role of the United Nations in international economic order. It Takes A Village To Solve The Problems In Legal Education: Every Faculty Member's Role In Academic Support, Melissa J. Marlow

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review

This article suggests a fundamental shift in the way traditional faculty view their role in academic support, from merely assisting with academic support duties to becoming equally responsible with academic support faculty for student achievement. The article explores how legal education arrived at the current division of labor in teaching weaker students. Additionally, it examines why the current situation is not the best plan of action for maximizing student learning. Finally, it touches upon possible solutions that would work toward uniting law school faculty in their common purpose of preparing all students for the rigors of legal practice.

Over the past dozen years, Cyberlaw courses have become a staple of the law school curriculum. This Essay explores methodological and pedagogical issues raised by these courses.

The Essay considers the organization of a Cyberlaw curriculum in Part I, some challenges posed by Cyberlaw courses in Part II, some tools to teach Cyberlaw courses in Part III, evaluation methods in Part IV, and teaching materials in Part V.

Studies have shown that students are more likely to retain information and achieve a higher level of thinking if professors incorporate a variety of teaching methods that respect the various ways that students absorb information. In an effort to acknowledge and validate the learning styles of all students, the author developed online Research Diagnostics to supplement the legal research curriculum. This article describes the Research Diagnostics and discusses the benefits of using the Research Diagnostics to assist in teaching legal research skills.
