Join us for a thought-provoking talk with Professor Joel Swanson of Sarah Lawrence College as he explores the intense debates over free speech and its boundaries within the French Jewish community during the Dreyfus Affair. At this pivotal time, French Jews debated extensively the question of whether there should be limits on speech in the name of protecting the Jewish community. By examining these historical debates and their outcomes, Professor Swanson will highlight parallels with the current discussions surrounding American Jews, pointing to historical precedents for lessons about how to approach current controversies. The Future Of Public Service Loan Forgiveness (Pslf) Under The Trump Administration, Arrianne Bautista
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog
The earnings of public sector employees trail behind those of their private sector counterparts, and this income disparity is continually increasing. Thus, the burden of repaying student loan debt weighs heavily on public servants. Lower earnings, and the resulting difficulty in repaying student loans, tend to dissuade individuals from pursuing or maintaining careers in public service, thereby leading to staffing shortages in essential workforce sectors, particularly since those positions often require highly educated candidates. In 2007, Congress sought to address these burdens by passing the College Cost Reduction and Access Act (“CCRAA”), which established the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (“PSLF”) …

Us Supreme Court Reopens Door For Restitution Of Nazi Stolen Painting, David Seen
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog
The looting of works of art during World War II represents one of the most significant cultural thefts in history, with the Nazi state seeking to enrich itself by seizing property of the people it persecuted. The Nazis systematically seized thousands of invaluable works of art and cultural assets from museums, galleries, and private collections across Europe. The methods of seizure ranged from barefaced theft to indirect means such as forcing individuals to sell their property to finance their flights into exile. Due to the fact that many works of art were not looted directly but seized through indirect means, …

Democracies are under pressure worldwide – externally by authoritarian states and internally by political forces that spread anti-democratic ideologies even if masked by avowed concern for the people. While reasons are intensely debated, this talk critically revisits explanations for the charisma of post-democratic ideologies by (1) investigating normative foundations of the exacting and fragile project of democracy and its relation to human rights and (2) discussing human rights theory in times of widespread human rights skepticism and its meaning for crises of democracy. How can we defend the project of democracy in theory and practice?

On January 17, 2025, the Supreme Court in TikTok Inc. v. Garland upheld the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (the “Act”),[2] effectively banning TikTok in the United States unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells its American operations. Despite a rocky start, New York City’s Central Business District Tolling Program, more commonly known as the city’s congestion pricing plan, has seen demonstrable success in its implementation. The plan aims to ease traffic in some of Manhattan’s busiest streets by charging motorists nine dollars for entry to the Congestion Relief Zone during peak hours, with the revenue supporting the struggling Metropolitan Transportation Authority (“MTA”) and funding the public transportation that keeps the city running.

The Future Of Non-Competes In Ny: Non-Competes Reconsidered In Senate Bill S4641a, Daisy Elliot
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog
Non-competes are contracts that prevent an employee from working for or starting a competing business. Typically, non-competes are enforceable for a specific period of time, ranging from six months to two years. These agreements can affect all employees, ranging from low-wage workers to CEOs. Non-competes are a controversial topic, with ongoing debate about their necessity. Advocates often argue they are necessary to protect trade secrets, while opponents argue they lower wages and limit job opportunities. In New York, non-competes remain enforceable; however, as lawmakers push for reform, their future remains uncertain.

The Legal Reckoning Of Reality Television: Contestant Rights And Producer Responsibilities, Tyler Caffrey
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog
Reality television has become a dominant force in modern entertainment. Behind the scenes, however, contestants face serious legal and ethical concerns. Many reality TV participants allege exploitative working conditions, misleading contracts, and inadequate compensation. Traditionally, networks classify contestants as independent contractors, exempting them from labor protections such as minimum wage and overtime pay.
