Imagining The Future: Training Hong Kong Lawyers For The 21 St Century, David N. Smith Dec 1999

Imagining The Future: Training Hong Kong Lawyers For The 21 St Century, David N. Smith

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Hong Kong must commit itself now to becoming one of the leaders in legal education in Asia and the world. To do so, it must dramatically rethink the structure, process and content of legal education. This will not be easy, but it is essential if Hong Kong is to continue to serve as one of the great centres of finance, trade and technology in the world and if it is to maintain and secure a position of leadership in 21st century China and the Pacific region.

Revamping The Law Tutorial, Nadja Alexander, Ann Black Sep 1997

Revamping The Law Tutorial, Nadja Alexander, Ann Black

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The lecture/tutorial format is the dominant structurethrough which law is taught in Australia. This articleexamines the learning environment of the law tutorial, andsuggests approaches aimed at maximising the learningexperience for students, on the basis of students’ learningpreferences. The discussion utilises Golay’s learningpattern assessment in developing an understanding of thedifferent learning styles of students. Based on thisanalysis, activities are advanced which advocate andimplement joint tutor-student responsibility for learningwithin tutorials. It is argued that students will learn moreeffectively, and expand their learning experiences wheninvolved directly in the structure, format and content ofthe tutorial itself.

Constructing A Clinic, Philip G. Schrag Jan 1996

Constructing A Clinic, Philip G. Schrag

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The author addresses some basic structural questions that the clinic's supervisor or supervisors might think about when beginning to design or renovate a program. These include the goals of the proposed clinic; the number and qualifications of its teaching and support staff; the desired relationships among staff members; the subject matter of the clinic's cases; the duration of the clinic, the amount of course credit that students should receive for taking it, and the caseload per student; the grading system; the relationships between the students and the tribunals or other fora in which they will be practicing; how the clinic …

Becoming Gentlemen: Women's Experiences At One Ivy League Law School, Lani Guinier, Michelle Fine, Jane Balin, Ann Bartow, Deborah Lee Stachel

Publications and Research

In this Article we describe preliminary research by and about women law students at the University of Pennsylvania Law School—a typical, if elite, law school stratified deeply along gender lines. Our database draws from students enrolled at the Law School between 1987 and 1992, and includes academic performance data from 981 students, self-reported survey data from 366 students, written narratives from 104 students, and group-level interview data of approximately eighty female and male students.' From these data we conclude that the law school experience of women in the aggregate differs markedly from that of their male peers.

Moving Into Management From The Outside, Lynn Wishart Jul 1989

Moving Into Management From The Outside, Lynn Wishart

Library Staff Articles

When accepting a promotion from outside the organization, the new manager must understand what is being given up and left behind, and must also realize clearly what expectations the new library holds. In the new position, the outside manager must articulate goals and find common ground with supervisors and subordinates. The take-charge period should be used for judicious decision making and intense learning.

The Serpent Strikes: Simulation In A Large First-Year Course, Philip G. Schrag Jan 1989

The Serpent Strikes: Simulation In A Large First-Year Course, Philip G. Schrag

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Simulation in legal education has come of age. Once confined to moot court exercises and trial practice offerings, simulation is now accepted, in principle, as a legitimate method of instruction in many types of courses. Every recent volume of the Journal of Legal Education has included at least one article on simulation, and in the past few years published works have offered the community of law teachers advice on using simulation to teach administrative law, contracts, constitutional law, bankruptcy, civil procedure, pretrial litigation, legislation, the "lawyering" process, and, of course, negotiation. These writings have helped to make simulation an accessible …
