Ann Arbor And Legal Aid, James J. White

Articles

Since the leasing of its office in August 1965, the Washtenaw County Legal Aid Society has been open nearly 50 hours per week and has been staffed exclusively by second and third-year law students from the University of Michigan Law School. The bulk of the practice has been in family law--divorce, support, custody--but there have been a substantial number of creditor-debtor cases, a handful of misdemeanor defense cases, and a large batch of miscellaneous cases.

Much Ado About Nothing: The J.D. Movement, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1966

Much Ado About Nothing: The J.D. Movement, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

In a recent article appearing in The Student Lawyer Journal, Dean John G. Hervey of the Oklahoma City University School of Law presented what, on first reading, appeared to be a very well documented argument in support of the uniform awarding of the Juris Doctor (J.D.) as the first degree in law. There can be little quarrel with Dean Hervey's statistical abstracts which he uses to build the central thesis of his article. The importance of this information to support his sweeping generalities is to be severely questioned. The position of the American Bar Association is also eminently clear. However, …

Scientific Eclat And Technological Change: Some Implications For Legal Education, George T. Frampton Jun 1965

Scientific Eclat And Technological Change: Some Implications For Legal Education, George T. Frampton

Michigan Law Review

The law-trained man has frequently been viewed as faced toward the past and preoccupied with precedent, form, words, technicalities, and money. Well might such a man be the fitting product of an educational diet of moldering appellate case opinions taken Socratically with a few crusts of casebook "notes" and classroom lapses into lecture. This is not a man for the season of scientific successes or for a society transformed by technological change.

Thirty Years Of Legal Education, Allan F. Smith Jun 1964

Thirty Years Of Legal Education, Allan F. Smith

Michigan Law Review

A generation of law students has moved through the University of Michigan Law Quadrangle since its dedication on June 13, 1934. The prophecy quoted above has been fulfilled, although the process of its fulfillment has not ended and will not end, for the process of law is indeed "an endless 'becoming.' " Despite the difficulties of carving segments from that which is essentially continuous and unbroken, it seems appropriate to pause at this thirtieth anniversary of the Quadrangle and to observe the segment of time which separates the dedication and the present day.
