The Burdens Of Educational Loans: The Impacts Of Debt On Job Choice And Standards Of Living For Students At Nine American Law Schools, David L. Chambers
Articles
American law students are borrowing large sums of money. For graduates at many schools, cumulative debts of $40,000 from college and law school have become the norm, and debts of $50,000, $60,000, and even more are common. The sums students are borrowing are much larger today than they were ten years ago, even after adjusting for increases in the cost of living. They have risen at a considerably faster pace than the starting salaries at small law firms and government agencies. They have even risen at a faster pace than the starting salaries in many large firms. The new pattern …

On Retiring From A Deanship, John W. Reed

The reason for the italicized "from" in the title of my remarks is to distinguish it from the comments that I made at our meeting in Tucson four years ago, under the title "On Retiring to a Deanship." For those of you who were not there, I should mention that five years ago, as I was about to reach retirement age at the University of Michigan Law School-what the late William L. Prosser used to call the age of mandatory senility-Wayne State University in Detroit asked me to serve as its dean for a term of five years. Lobbied by …

Gatekeepers Of The Profession: An Empirical Profile Of The Nation's Law Professors, Robert J. Borthwich, Jordan Schau
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Part I of this Note surveys the existing body of literature on legal education, with a particular emphasis on previous empirical studies concerning law professors. Part II focuses on the increasing number of women in the teaching profession. Part III looks at the nonteaching experience of law teachers, including judicial clerkships, private practice, government experience, and public interest experience. Finally, Part IV examines the influence of "elite schools" in law school hiring and tenure decisions.

Do Pigs Need Wings? Introductory Thoughts On Law Reviews, Errors, And The Coase Theorem, Stephen Calkins
Law Faculty Research Publications
Ever since shepherd children stumbled upon the Dead Sea Scrolls, a small group of scholars controlled access to these writings. These scholars painstakingly edited and published so far about half the historic texts. Scholars not numbered among the select few complained of the arrogance implicit in limiting access to the original materials. Now the critics have their chance. In late 1991 the Biblical Archaeology Society published a "facsimile edition" of the previously unpublished scrolls. Professor Robert H. Eisenman, coeditor of the new edition, boasted that this was "'the last stage in breaking the monopoly' of authorized editors over the scroll …

The Future Of Law Librarians In Changing Institutions, Or The Hazards And Opportunities Of New Information Technology, Peter W. Martin
The Future Of Law Librarians In Changing Institutions, Or The Hazards And Opportunities Of New Information Technology, Peter W. Martin
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
It is uncontroverted that a major technological shift in the delivery of legal information is well underway. What will be the effects of these changes on law librarians and, more importantly, what opportunities will the changes create? Professor Martin suggests several opportunities stemming from the distinctive competencies of law librarians.
