Response To The David Segal Article, November 19, 2011, In New York Times, Martin J. Katz
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
As David Segal’s November 19 article accurately reflects, the legal market is changing. Clients are no longer willing to foot the bill for young lawyers’ training, and thus law firms are increasingly looking to the law schools to produce practice-ready graduates.
The good news is that there are clear solutions to the problem, and they are already in motion. A report published in 2007 by the Carnegie Foundation entitled "Education Lawyers" identified precisely the problem described in Mr. Segal’s article and suggested that law schools should address it by developing courses that educate law students on three levels: knowledge, practice …

Why This Time Is Different: The Perfect Storm And The Future Of Legal Education, Martin J. Katz
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
When we discuss legal education reform, some of the more jaded members of our community often ask, “Why is this time any different?” They rattle off a list of dust-covered reports about proposed reforms for legal education, often dating back several decades, and wonder how we can be optimistic about the prospects for meaningful reform now.
The answer is that we are in the midst of a perfect storm; one in which several powerful forces are driving law schools toward reform.

The Law School Firm, Bradley T. Borden, Robert J. Rhee
UF Law Faculty Publications
This Article introduces the concept of the law school firm. The concept calls for law schools to establish affiliated law firms. The affiliation would provide opportunities for students, faculty, and attorneys to collaborate and share resources to teach, research, write, serve clients, and influence the development of law and policy. Based loosely on the medical school model, the law school firm will help bridge the gap between law schools and the practice of law.

Vanderbilt Law Review
A year ago, many of us gathered in Vanderbilt University Law School's Flynn Auditorium to attend a "Celebration of the Life of Professor Richard Nagareda." Frankly, I didn't feel like celebrating, a sentiment I suspect others shared. Richard-scholar, teacher, mentor, colleague, friend, father, husband-had left this earth before any of us were ready to part with him. And yet, as the speakers shared their memories of Richard, the intense grief I had felt since learning of Richard's untimely death began to dissipate. There was then, and there remains now, so much to celebrate about his life. For in his forty-seven …

Journal of Food Law & Policy
A group of students enrolled in a law school clinic wanders through a large farmers' market. They stop to chat with the proprietors of a farm that has sold vegetables at the market for many years. They visit with a cheesemaker and an apple grower. A second group learns about the economic costs of organic production from a farmer and talks with an olive oil producer. Both sets of students seem unusually attentive to their surroundings. That may be because the first group helped the sponsor of the market rework the market's rules and regulations, and the second developed a …

University of the District of Columbia Law Review
Bar passage rates began to fall at the University of the District of Columbia, David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC-DCSL) in the late 1990s as the District and the School of Law dealt with many changes related to uncertain funding and staffing. As a result, in 1998, the Law School created the Bar Passage Task Force (BPTF) to study the issue, prepare a plan of action to put bar passage on an upward path, and to implement that plan. In 2003, at the time of UDC-DCSL's application for full accreditation with the American Bar Association (ABA), the Law School's …

Clinical Professors' Professional Responsibility: Preparing Law Students To Embrace Pro Bono, Douglas L. Colbert
Clinical Professors' Professional Responsibility: Preparing Law Students To Embrace Pro Bono, Douglas L. Colbert
Faculty Scholarship
This article begins by examining the current crisis in the U.S. legal system where approximately three out of four low- and middle-income litigants are denied access to counsel's representation when faced with the loss of essential rights - -a home, child custody, liberty and deportation - - and where most lawyers decline to fulfill their ethical responsibility of pro bono service to those who cannot afford private counsel. The article traces the evolving ethical standards of a lawyer's professional responsibility that today views every attorney as a public citizen having a special responsibility to the quality of justice.

Seven Principles: Increasing Access To Law School Among Students Of Color, Catherine E. Smith
Seven Principles: Increasing Access To Law School Among Students Of Color, Catherine E. Smith
Scholarly Articles
In Fall 2010, I became one of the first tenured professors in the nation to hold a deanship dedicated exclusively to diversity in a school of law. As the Associate Dean of Institutional Diversity and Inclusiveness at the University of Denver's Sturm College of Law ("SCOL"), I am charged with strengthening access to the legal academy, particularly among, but not limited to, students and faculty of color. This Essay describes the evolution of my role and the seven principles that currently guide student pipeline and recruitment efforts at the SCOL. These principles help the SCOL focus those efforts, work strategically, …

Toward Integrated Law Clinics That Train Social Justice Advocates, Marcy L. Karin, Robin R. Runge
Journal Articles
The integrated approach to clinical legal education enables law students to explore and to utilize more than one legal advocacy strategy simultaneously to achieve social change. This framework facilitates law students’ ability to develop a range of essential lawyering skills including reflecting upon the connection between law and social justice by addressing the broader social problems impacting our communities. The integrated approach has been accepted as an effective clinic structure, and is being successfully developed and applied in a range of ways that are best suited to specific legal issues and geographic regions. In this article the authors, who are …
