Administrative Law: The Hidden Comparative Law Course, Peter L. Strauss

What does today's Administrative Law course give your students that you might not be aware of and might be helped by knowing? That, as I understand it, is the question I am to answer. But we may also want to think about the overall shape of the curriculum: it may be useful to ask about fundamental issues our students may not be aware of, that may not be dealt with elsewhere in the law school curriculum. I'll spend most of my time on the question I've been asked to address, but I hope you will accept a few sentences on …
Throwing Stones At The Mudbank: The Impact Of Scholarship On Administrative Law, Ronald A. Cass, Jack M. Beermann
Throwing Stones At The Mudbank: The Impact Of Scholarship On Administrative Law, Ronald A. Cass, Jack M. Beermann
Faculty Scholarship
The impact of administrative law scholarship on administrative law seems at first blush both a relatively straightforward issue and one that academicians should be especially eager to engage. But there is reason to doubt both propositions. First, any effort to grapple with this topic compels the conclusion that the issue is by no means straightforward. As Peter Strauss recently observed, the question of the influence of administrative law scholarship necessarily becomes as well the influence of active engagement in the practice of administrative law on scholarship.' Moreover, the questions implicated in this assessment cannot be narrowly compassed. The topic requires …

Commissions Of Inquiry And Public Policy In Canada, Frank Iacobucci
Dalhousie Law Journal
Most Canadians attach a great deal of importance to commissions of inquiry. When commissions of inquiry are appointed and when they report, great public attention is usually focussed on the substantive and serious issues discussed.

Dear Roger:
You would have enjoyed being among the hundred-odd administrative law teachers and hangers-on who met this past weekend for the AALS Workshop on Administrative Law, organized by Ernest Gellhorn of Virginia, [now dean at Case Western]. Perhaps it was the plane ride home, when I had a chance to read Frank Easterbrook's short but very elegant use of Arrow's Theorem in a recent Harvard Law Review; or perhaps it is just a goodnight's sleep, home away from the sybaritic pleasures of New Orleans, and knowing my dean will want a justification in terms …

Dedication, Michigan Law Review
E. Blythe Stason, John R. Dethmers
E. Blythe Stason, John R. Dethmers
Michigan Law Review
His extreme modesty and unwillingness to advertise himself or permit others to extol him, his utter unselfishness, and his complete subordination of self and personal interests to those of the University and Law School to which he gave four decades of loyal and devoted service, have combined to leave biographical materials about Dean E. Blythe Stason, except for the most routine accounts, almost nonexistent. Writings by him are amazing in number and scope. Writings about him can scarcely be found. This is not because there is a lack of things to write about him and his many, brilliant accomplishments in …

E. Blythe Stason- Engineer Of Administrative Law, Ashley Sellers
Michigan Law Review
The retirement of E. Blythe Stason from the deanship of the Law School of the University of Michigan affords occasion for testimonials to him and to his work, including preeminently his enormous contribution to the improvement of both federal and state administrative law. Imposing as has been his career as the beloved and successful Dean of that superb school, his eminence among the scholars and craftsmen in administrative law was achieved before he began to occupy the Dean's chair and, God willing, he will long continue to lend his strong, skilled hands to the never-ending task of the perfection of …

If Men Were Angels: A Review, E. Blythe Stason
If Men Were Angels: A Review, E. Blythe Stason
Michigan Law Review
Occasionally one encounters a new book that is genuinely interesting because of the refreshing vigor with which it attacks an important and timely problem. Such a book is Jerome Frank's new volume, If Men Were Angels. Indeed in some of its chapters its vigor approaches violence, a fact which adds spice to the reading.
