A Bolt Of Lightning: Measuring The Impact Of Modern Transitions On The Supreme Court, Daniel Kiel Oct 2021

A Bolt Of Lightning: Measuring The Impact Of Modern Transitions On The Supreme Court, Daniel Kiel

Cardozo Law Review

Lightning struck on September 18, 2020. In a year in which so many unimaginable events had unfolded and were unfolding, the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg sent shock waves not only through the nation’s legal community, but throughout the country. Ginsburg, a champion of women’s rights as both lawyer and Justice, the multi-time survivor of cancer, the Court’s tiny, surprising, and notorious rock star, passed away at a precarious moment. Aside from the existential challenge presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the nation was 46 days from a presidential election. Given that the responsibility of nominating Supreme Court Justices fell …

Articles

So thanks to Nancy and to the NYU Annual Survey of American Law for the privilege to speak here about Judge Katzmann, who's been a personal mentor to me and a real source of inspiration about the good that one person, albeit an extraordinary person, can do.

Looking At The Overlooked: Portraits Of Law School Deans, Peter Goodrich Dec 2006

Looking At The Overlooked: Portraits Of Law School Deans, Peter Goodrich

Articles

The article examines the role of portraits in law schools, arguing that these images are not merely decorative but serve as powerful symbols that shape institutional identity and the legal profession. Despite their ubiquity, these portraits are often overlooked, yet they function as megalographs, inscribing and disseminating the values, history, and authority of the institution. The author contends that these visual elements play a crucial role in the formation of legal identity and the symbolic order of law schools.

Judge Charles Edward Clark Edited By Peninah Petruck, Peter Charles Hoffer Dec 1993

Judge Charles Edward Clark Edited By Peninah Petruck, Peter Charles Hoffer

Cardozo Law Review

For everyone who knew him while he lived and everyone whose career or education he touched, Charles Edward Clark (1889-1963) was a presence almost larger than life. A shade under six feet tall, with a bullfrog voice, barrel chest, and broad shoulders, he could not be missed in a crowd. A man whose habits and opinions had an "allor-nothing quality" during a critical era for legal education and government-lawyer relations, Clark's presence seemed to fill the law school he led and the bench on which he sat.

Jacob Burns's Generosity, June D. Wolfman

Cardozo Law Review

At Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, as in so many other places, Mr. Jacob Bums is known for his exceptionally generous financial contributions. Through the Jacob Bums Scholars Program, I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Bums on several occasions. It was clear to me, and to all of us in the program, that Mr. Bums's support of our school and its students was far more than financial. Mr. Bums supported our student body from his heart.

Law, Literature And Cardozo's Judicial Poetics, Richard H. Weisberg Jan 1979

Law, Literature And Cardozo's Judicial Poetics, Richard H. Weisberg

Cardozo Law Review

The following article suggests a new perspective on Benjamin N. Cardozo's judicial theory. The introductory pages offer a comparison of Cardozo to a strikingly similar figure from the literary world, Flaubert, and in that light emphasize his awareness and acceptance of the place of culture and intuition in the judicial enterprise. Part I perceives Cardozo's imprecisely named "Method of Sociology" as pointing, in effect, to a "Method of Culture." This section also elaborates on the intuitive element of his judicial "poetics," not as a method in itself, but as the disciplined subjectivity which leads judges to use his four methods …
