Change Management: Antecedents And Consequences In Casino Crm, Sudhir H. Kale

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) continues to attract increasing attention within the casino industry. While the vital role of change management in making CRM projects successful has been acknowledged for quite some time, there is little in extant literature to explain the nature and conduct of change management in the CRM context. This article posits that relevant change management is a prerequisite for successful implementation of a casino's CRM. Change management involves five key initiatives: selling change internally, creating an appropriate infrastructure for change management, CRM-relevant training, a reconfiguration of the organization structure and performance assessment measures, and recasting existing incentive …

Residents' Perceptions Of Casino Development In Korea: The Kangwon Land Casino Case, Ki-Joon Back, Choong-Ki Lee

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This study was developed to examine the underlying relationships among the socio-demographic variables of casino community residents, the perceptions of potential benefits and costs, and the support for casino development based on the social exchange theory. The results show that social and economic benefits were most significant in determining the level of support for casino development. None of the demographic variables significantly affected support level. Based on the results of this study, casino operators and policymakers should make efforts to minimize the negative social factors and maximize social and economic benefits if they want support from residents for further development …

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This research is the first scientific study of gambling participation and pathological gambling in Macao. In 2003, a computer-assisted random digit dialing method was used to conduct 1,121 telephone interviews. Two-thirds of respondents expressed that they have participated in at least one of the fourteen forms of gambling in the past year. The three most popular forms of gambling include social gambling, Mark Six lottery, and soccer/basketball betting. As for the prevalence of pathological gambling, the Chinese DSM-IV Gambling Behavior Index was used as the screening tool and results indicate that 1.78% of respondents are classified as probable pathological gamblers …

Estimating The Short-Term Effects Of An Increase In Par On Reel Slot Performance, Anthony F. Lucas, Karl D. Brandmeir

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Data from a US hotel casino are analyzed to examine the validity of a controversial theory holding that reel slot players are unable to perceive substantial increases in par (i.e., a hidden price). The results of a multiple regression analysis support this theory. A 50% increase in the pars of a $5.00 reel sample, failed to significantly affect the performance of these games. The control-group games featured 5.0% pars, while the experiment-group pars were set at 7.5%. Descriptive statistics show that the theoretical win per unit actually increased at the 7.5% par. The strategy behind the theory is to obtain …

The Responsible Gambling Code In Queensland, Australia: Implementation And Venue Assessment, Helen Breen, Jeremy Buultzens, Nerilee Hing

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

In Australia, the state of Queensland introduced a voluntary Responsible Gambling Code of Practice in 2002. This investigation examines levels of implementation and perceptions of adequacy of the Code in casinos, hotels and licensed clubs in three Queensland regions. It involved on-site inspections of 30 venues and semi-structured interviews with 35 venue managers and staff. The level of implementation varied but most venues had implemented between 40 and 60 percent of the Code's practices. Managers' perceptions of the adequacy of the Code's practices revealed that some practices, such as physical layout of the venue, were considered much more effective than …

An Assessment Of Crime Volume Following Casino Gaming Development In The City Of Detroit, Omar Moufakkir

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Debates surrounding casino gaming development in the US often are based on the assumption that the opening of a casino is followed by an increase in crime in the host community and surrounding areas. This paper examined crime volume in Detroit, Michigan and neighboring communities before, during and after the three Detroit casinos opened. Findings indicated that total Index Crime offenses did not increase in Detroit. However, it appeared that the volume of certain types of crime slightly increased while others decreased. This research developed profiles of current land based casino patrons who have gambled on the Internet, those who have not but are willing to try, and those who have not and would not in the future consider Internet gambling. Casino Atmospherics From A Customer's Perspective: A Re-Examination, Lesley Johnson, Karl J. Mayer, Elena Champaner Dec 2012

Casino Atmospherics From A Customer's Perspective: A Re-Examination, Lesley Johnson, Karl J. Mayer, Elena Champaner

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Considerable research in recent years has examined the influence of physical evidence, or atmosphere, in a variety of service settings, including leisure services. Not fully covered has been the area of atmosphere in a casino gaming setting. This extension of a previous study further investigates atmospherics in casinos. The findings showed that customers defined casino atmosphere in five key elements: theme, floor layout, ceiling height, employee uniforms, and noise level. Three of the five contributed positively to a player's satisfaction with the gaming experience as shown by the regression analysis. This reinforces previous indications of the need for casino management …

Impact Of Light, Medium And Heavy Spenders On Casino Destinations: Segmenting Gaming Visitors Based On Amount Of Non-Gaming Expenditures, Omar Moufakkir, A.J. Singh, Afke Moufakkir-Van Der Woud, Donald F. Holecek

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This article discusses the viability of targeting heavy spenders on non-gaming products and services in gaming travel marketing. A sample of visitors to two commercial casinos was divided into light, medium and heavy spenders based on spending per person per day, excluding gambling. Findings indicated that a large number of heavy-spending tourists were not interested in gaming, but in the destination's other tourism products. This suggests that the region's tourism assets play an important role in enhancing casino visitation. Promoting the casino as part of the overall tourism attractions may benefit both the casino and related businesses in the community.

Challenges In Responsible Provision Of Gambling: Questions Of Efficacy, Effectiveness And Efficiency, Nerilee Hing, Jo Mackellar Dec 2012

Challenges In Responsible Provision Of Gambling: Questions Of Efficacy, Effectiveness And Efficiency, Nerilee Hing, Jo Mackellar

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This paper aims to explain why responsible provision of gambling is an important corporate social issue facing many gambling providers by examining its status with reference to three characteristic features of such issues proposed in the corporate social responsibility literature--expectational gaps, impacts and controversy (Wartick and Mahon, 1994). The existence of expectational gaps, impacts and controversy relating to contemporary gambling operations thus clarifies why gambling providers are under pressure to manage their gambling operations in a more socially responsible manner. A second aim is to clarify why resolving this issue has been difficult. Drawing on a second explanatory framework from …

Community Leader Perceptions Of The Social And Economic Impacts Of Indian Gaming, Patricia L. Janes, Jim Collison

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

The development of casino gambling in recent years whether through state-regulated or Native American gaming operations has resulted in increased concern over social and economic impacts. This study assessed perceptions of eight community leaders as to how the area was affected by a major expansion of a Native American casino. Leaders were interviewed prior to and several years after the completed expansion. Leaders felt the expansion had contributed positively to the community but noted increased social concerns. Overall, economic impacts were positive, however, the uniqueness of a Native American casino operation posed other challenges.

Political Culture And Gambling Policy: A Cross-National Study, William N. Thompson, Carl Lutrin, Asher Friedberg

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This paper seeks to find relationships between political culture and policy making on gambling in four jurisdictions, including Nevada and California, two adjacent U.S. States, and also in Great Britain and Israel. While the stages of political culture have not advanced to a tightly knit theory from which an array of testable hypotheses can flow, the concept can be helpful in understanding policy developments in gambling across national borders. Though this discussion leans toward the academic style, it offers a practical approach to cultural sensitivity that casino operatives should consider when expanding to divergent populations in new host communities, to …

Trends Of Japan's Giant Leisure Industry: Pachinko, Ko Hirano, Kiyomi Takahashi

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Japanese law does not treat Pachinko as a form of gambling but rather as a leisure activity. Even though it is classified as a leisure activity, regulators still see a risk that Pachinko may stir up one's gambling spirit. Pachinko parlors are facing a reduction in number of visitors. Pachinko is becoming a popular investment for chain operators through domestic and foreign capital.

Crm In Gaming: It's No Crapshoot!, Sudhir H. Kale

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

CRM, or Customer Relationship Management, though slightly more than a decade old, has become the management craze of the 21st century. Yet, managerial understanding of what CRM is, what it does, how to implement it, and the grounds for success or failure in CRM implementation, seem far from crystallized. This paper looks at why so many CRM endeavors fail, and proceeds to discuss issues critical to CRM's success. CRM projects in casinos will have a higher chance of success if CRM is viewed as a business philosophy and becomes a part of the corporate culture. Appropriate customer strategy, organizational transformation, …

Glass Ceiling Or Saran Wrap™? Women In Gaming Management, Wanda M. Costen, Christian E. Hardigree, Michael A. Testagrossa

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This study explores women's representation in gaming management in the 24 highest gross revenue gaming establishments in America. While almost 54% of foodservice and lodging employees are women, and approximately 44% of the managers in foodservice and lodging are women, one area of hospitality seems to be lagging-gaming. Our data indicated that women held 123 of 496 positions or 24.8% of casino management positions. Almost 68% of these female managers were in non-gaming positions. Our findings appear to support social closure theory since 11 of the 40 women in gaming management positions were in the cage department, and 4 of …

A Virtual Pandora's Box: What Cyberspace Gambling Prohibition Means To Terrestrial Casino Operators, David G. Schwartz Dec 2012

A Virtual Pandora's Box: What Cyberspace Gambling Prohibition Means To Terrestrial Casino Operators, David G. Schwartz

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Recently, there has been increased pressure on the U.S. Congress to act against Internet gambling. While it may be tempting for terrestrial casinos to watch idly as the federal government moves to eliminate a potential competitor, those in the business of gaming must be leery of any federal efforts to halt gambling online. In the final analysis, the same arguments to restrict consumer choice in cyberspace can be easily used against gambling in real casinos-a compelling reason for terrestrial gaming operators to forcefully oppose any federal restrictions on Americans' rights to gamble.

A survey was conducted to sample 600 residents regarding currently a widely debated introduction of land-based casinos in the state, yielding a response rate of 38.4%. The results support earlier studies regarding the impact religion has on people's attitudes toward gaming. The findings suggest that Catholics have a more positive attitude toward the legalization of gambling than persons of Protestant faiths.

Principles, Processes And Practices In Responsible Provision Of Gambling: A Conceptual Discussion, Nerilee Hing Dec 2012

Principles, Processes And Practices In Responsible Provision Of Gambling: A Conceptual Discussion, Nerilee Hing

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This paper develops a definition and conceptual framework of responsible provision of gambling that integrates three central constructs in the corporate social performance literature. It depicts responsible provision of gambling as the congruence between the socially responsible principles, socially responsive processes and socially desirable practices that gambling operators pursue and those expected by their key stakeholders in managing the social impacts of gambling. The framework therefore provides some theoretical underpinnings to clarify the meaning of responsible provision of gambling and to facilitate its implementation in order to inform scholarly research and applied initiatives. Some potential research applications of the framework …
