The Utilization Of Artillery And Mortars As Infantry Support Weapons In The Chaco War, Charles John Goodall Jun 1965

The Utilization Of Artillery And Mortars As Infantry Support Weapons In The Chaco War, Charles John Goodall

Masters Theses

I. The Background of the Conflict

In the summer of 1932, while the world's attention was focused upon Japanese aggression in Manchuria, a border skirmish in the upper reaches of the Plata valley ignited a conflict which could not be extinguished by the good offices of the Pan-American Union or the peace-making machinery of the League of Nations. The prize in question, nearly one hundred and fifty thousand square miles of savanna and swamp, would be minuscule in comparison with the territorial acquisitions of the dictators of that era, but to the two politically unstable and highly nationalistic nations contesting …

Negro Contributions To The Political And Legal History Of The Southern Counties Of West Virginia, Charles Edward Easton

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The introduction of African labor as a muscular force was an adventurous enterprise, proving on trial to be the most perfect catalytic agent of production then known to commerce. This labor force was the fulfillment of the great demand of the young colony which needed a controllable and dependable labor force to make it accessible for human habitation. This labor demand made it profitable for adventurous traders to invest money in the enterprise of importing indentured servants to the new colonies in America. Later a system was developed by which individuals could come to the new colony as either indentured …

The Road To Murfreesboro: The Eleventh Michigan Volunteer Infantry From Organization Through Its First Battle, Wayne C. Mann Jun 1963

The Road To Murfreesboro: The Eleventh Michigan Volunteer Infantry From Organization Through Its First Battle, Wayne C. Mann

Masters Theses

Introduction

This is a history of the Eleventh Michigan Volunteer Infantry. It was never a famous regiment; it never did much out of the ordinary, and participated in few major battles. If three is anything to distinguish this regiment, it is that it is not distinguished. What happened to the Eleventh Michigan happened to countless other regiments both North and South. In a sense a study of one regiment provides a study of all.

The Eleventh tried to be different. It almost caught John Hunt Morgan in Kentucky. At Murfreesboro it made a desperate charge to retake the Cedars. It …

An Examination And Analysis Of Current Supervisory Development Programs In Municipal Police Departments, Stanley W. Kelley May 1963

An Examination And Analysis Of Current Supervisory Development Programs In Municipal Police Departments, Stanley W. Kelley

Masters Theses

Introduction

The modern policeman has one of the most complex and heterogeneous jobs to perform in our society. He is expected to be a combination of several specialists, each one requiring a high degree of competency and special skills. He is required to be a social case worker when dealing with juveniles, a psychologist when handling psychopaths, and a doctor when working accident patrol. He needs to be a methodical chemist when conducting criminal investigations and a congenial public relations man when working on traffic control.

Can such a jack-of-all-trades possibly be a master of any? It is true that …

An Approach To The Study Of Non-Literate Law In Three North American Societies, Elizabeth C. Funk May 1955

An Approach To The Study Of Non-Literate Law In Three North American Societies, Elizabeth C. Funk

Anthropology ETDs

Attempts to clarify the problem of law among non-literate peoples has been largely one of isolating with accuracy its distinguishing characteristics. Non-literate law is not written down or codified. Often, it is not sustained by any formal police force, and courts are lacking. Legislation, in the proper sense of the term, may be an attribute of developed legal systems only. A further difficulty is fostered by the fact that in any examination of law among peoples of other cultures, the investigator is hampered by concepts of legality derived from too close acquaintance with his own legal system. Social control of …

A Study Of The Cost Of Providing Substantially Equal Educational Facilities For Segregated Whites And Negro School Children In Arkansas, Edgar Alan Morris

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

An recent years, Negro patrons in several Arkansas school districts have appealed to the courts in efforts to get better educational facilities for their children, and the courts have ordered a substantially equal expenditure for the two races. Other suits of similar intent are now pending and still others are threatened.

From the foregoing it is apparent (1) that inequalities in educational facilities are not new in Arkansas and that the policies of the local school boards must be responsible; and (2) that the problem is centered in the local districts having mixed populations and that the disparity must be …

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

It is the purpose of this study (1) to analyze those New Mexico School laws which have been enacted since 1931; (2) to criticize them on the basis of their particular value, or lack of value, to public education in New Mexico; and (3) to suggest revisions which closely parallel the recommendations of outstanding research groups and authorities in the field of educational administration.

State school law is the foundation upon which a state education system is built. In view of this fact, it is highly important that those laws be periodically studied by educations in order that those which …

The endeavor is here made to show that this plan, besides being the best method to insure protection for the Saints against unexpected hostilities, was also a means of education for the red man in the arts of peace.

The Senate's Veto Power Over Presidential Appointments To The Supreme Court, 1916-1930, Wallace Worthy Hall Jan 1932

The Senate's Veto Power Over Presidential Appointments To The Supreme Court, 1916-1930, Wallace Worthy Hall

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is a well known fact that in recent years the United States Senate has increasingly become more critical of presidential appointments to the Supreme Court branch. In this thesis the author has undertaken an intensive study of the several cases between 1916 and 1930 in which, serious opposition developed to the confirmation of Supreme Court appointments. Within this period fall the unsuccessful fights against Justices Brandeis,Taft, Butler, Stone, and Hughes, and the successful opposition to Judge Parker. In each case an effort has been made to bring out the forces and arguments operative on either side of the controversy, and to …

Injunctions In California, William Consiglia Jan 1931

Injunctions In California, William Consiglia

Student Theses

No maxim is more firmly rooted in English and American
jurisprudence than the one which, given a free translation,
decries that, "no wrong shall exist without a remedy."
In conformity with the spirit of this ancient maxim, when
the English Lord Chancellors of former times found the
common-law writs inadequate to redress particular
grievance, they invented an extraordinary remedy
to which they afterwards frequently resorted, but
cautiously, to meet the exigencies of such cases as
they arose, to prevent hardship and injustice. They
viewed such extraordinary forms of relief very much
as the medical profession does poisonous antidotes,
to be …

Origin Of Equity Jurisdiction And Jurisprudence, Edward Murphy May 1930

Origin Of Equity Jurisdiction And Jurisprudence, Edward Murphy

Student Theses

Introductory Statement

It is not our purpose in this thesis to attempt a complete and detailed history of equity as it exists in England and in the United states. To do this would involve little more than a compilation of what has already been quite elaborately treated by some of the great legal minds of England and America.

We propose to treat rather of the nature of Equity as it existed in the Roman Law,its influence in the English law, the primitive condition of the law at the time of the origin of Equity, and of the causes which made …

Law Enforcement, Arthur J. Garskay May 1930

Law Enforcement, Arthur J. Garskay

Bachelors’ Theses

In many circles today, law enforcement is looked upon as a panacea for the present condition of lawlessness. Our political parties carry law enforcement planks in their platforms. The party in power seeks to carry out its pledge of remedying the evil. President Hoover appoints a Law Enforcement Commission and tells them that they are to deal with the dominant issue before the American people. He calls that issue "enforcement and obedience to the laws of the United States, both Federal and State".

Land Laws Of Kentucky., Lillian Logan Jan 1930

Land Laws Of Kentucky., Lillian Logan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis follows the growth of settlement in Kentucky from the time of her birth as a state in seventeen hundred and ninety-two, to the year eighteen hundred and thirty-seven, a period during which all of the land within her borders was opened for settlement. It does not pretend to relate a complete story of the march across Kentucky, but only to tell the important stages as revealed by the laws governing appropriating of land. There were no Indian towns or villages within the boundaries of what is now Kentucky, but certain tribes had definite hunting grounds. The Cherokees were …

Applications Of Character Evidence In Civil And Criminal Cases, Gerald Chargin Jan 1929

Applications Of Character Evidence In Civil And Criminal Cases, Gerald Chargin

Student Theses

The various rules of evidence which permit or exclude the
introduction of one's character or reputation, as possessing
probative value are all based upon a policy of the law, the
aim of which is to safeguard the courts against the risks of
erroneous verdicts.  This policy assumes that truth in the long
run will best be attained by the exclusion of certain kinds
of evidence or if allowable, upon certain conditions imposed,
in order to guide the deliberations of the judge or juries to
just verdicts.
