Record Number Of Golden Gate University School Of Law Students Receive California Bar Foundation Scholarships, Lisa Lomba

Six Golden Gate University School of Law students have received 2012 California Bar Foundation Scholarships – more scholarship recipients than any other California law school this year, with the exception of Stanford with whom Golden Gate tied. Three students received awards from the foundation’s flagship Public Interest Scholarship Program and three were awarded scholarships under the foundation’s Rosenthal Bar Exam Scholarship Program. The scholarships are awarded to exceptional law students who demonstrate a commitment to public service and academic excellence.

Regulators Say No To More Fossil Fuel Power Generation In California, Lisa Lomba

After determining that the existing electricity supply can meet the state’s system needs through the year 2020, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) voted unanimously today to defer any new procurement of fossil fuel generation. This ruling establishes for most of the state, that California’s long-term energy needs do not require building more fossil fuel infrastructure, which contributes to global warming.

Dunham Scholarship. The scholarship—named for Steve Dunham, a former firm-wide chair of Morrison & Foerster and now Vice President and General Counsel of The Johns Hopkins University—is intended for an incoming law student from a group historically underrepresented in the legal profession.

In a three-judge unanimous, unprecedented decision made Friday, March 9 affecting the rights of the mentally ill across the state, the California Court of Appeal held that Marin County had denied institutionalized, mentally ill people both constitutional and statutory rights. Golden Gate University School of Law Professor Mort Cohen represented two individualsand the California Association of Mental Health Patients Rights Advocates in K.G. Et al v. California Regulators Add Teeth To Landmark Clean Energy Policy, Lisa Lomba

Through the efforts of Pacific Environment represented by GGU Law's Environmental Law and Justice Clinic and the Sierra Club California represented by Earthjustice, and in partnership with Communities for a Better Environment, today the California Public Utilities Commission strengthened a key clean energy policy in California called the Loading Order. The Loading Order sets a priority list for electricity sources. California’s utilities must first employ energy efficiency and conservation to meet customer demand; then energy from renewable sources such as wind, solar and geothermal. Only after all those supplies are exhausted may the utilities purchase power from fossil fuel plants.
