Many attempts have been made to improve iron and steel and their alloys by the addition of boron. The results obtained were not encouraging for the reason that the amount of boron used, generally from 0.2 to 2.0 per cent is altogether too high. This percentage of boron renders the product hard and brittle and of late the experiments with boron in this connection have been practically abandoned.

The purpose of this investigation was to attempt to find some means of increasing the effective porosity and permeability of the producing sands of the Cut Bank Oil Field, with the hope that thereby the ultimate recovery of petroleum from this field may be increased. Although the percentage increase in production thus effected would undoubtedly be small, it would represent a substantial volume of petroleum in view of the great quantity of oil and gas present in this field.

The problem to be considered embraces the mineralogy and the mode of formation of a very pure and vein-like deposit of crystalline graphite. This deposit is of more than ordinary interest because in its geological relations and in the character of its graphite it shows many similarities to the famous deposits of Ceylon.

In studying the Cut Bank field and its numerous wells, it is found that dry holes are surrounded by producing wells, and also that the field as a whole is very irregular; water, oil, and gas zones in many cases following no definite pattern. In some instances, this phenomenon may be due to the lensing and thinning of the producing sands, but it is evident that this is not the only factor. Therefore, the controlling factors must be porosity and permeability.

Coal was first mined in Montana in the year 1880. For the last thirty years the mining of coal in this state has been very important-with few people realizing its value. In the mineral industry, the value of the annual production of coal is exceeded by none of the non-metallics, and only by gold, silver, and copper in the metallics. At the present time the coal production of Montana is valued at about 41000,000.00 annually.

Various electrolytes were experimented with in an attempt to deposit an iron-manganese alloy. An Alloy was obtained from a solution containing ferrous ammonium sulfate, manganous sulfate, and ammonium sulfate. Further experimentation was done in an effort to determine the optimum conditions of deposition and the highest manganese alloy which could be produced.

The author has made a study of an assemblage of fossils from the Blacktail Range near Dillon Montana with the purpose in view of attempting a correlation of that group with the fauna of the Big Snowy Group. Fossils have also been obtained from a limestone formation in northwestern Montana and from four different areas in the Amsden formation in central and western Montana.

Several months were required to produce a single gram of indium. Consequently, the industrial history of the metal is extremely short. In view of the unique properties that indium has demonstrated in this short period, it is probable that indium is still in its early stage of development. However, the commercial applications of the metal are well established and indium is now produced on a commercial scale. It is obtainable as the metal or in solution for electroplating.
