Loss On Ignition Using Infrared Heating, Benjamin J. Binoniemi
Loss On Ignition Using Infrared Heating, Benjamin J. Binoniemi
Masters Theses
The focus of this study is a proof of concept that infrared heating can be used to produce a reliable and rapid method of performing the loss on ignition test. The loss on ignition test is a foundry industry standard test that requires all moisture and volatile organic compounds be vaporized from a sample of foundry sand. The standard test as recommended by the American Foundry Society uses a muffle oven and requires nearly four hours to perform. This new concept performs the same test in approximately ten minutes. The biggest issues with the loss on ignition test are time …
Modeling New Product Success From Component Measures Of Product Advantage: A Model Utilizing Automated Text Classification And Sentiment Analysis, Ashley Nolen Akerman
Modeling New Product Success From Component Measures Of Product Advantage: A Model Utilizing Automated Text Classification And Sentiment Analysis, Ashley Nolen Akerman
Dissertations
What attributes of products are most associated with product success from the perspective of the consumer and how is this association affected by the technology level of the product offering? Creating successful new products is an imperative for long term survival for businesses. Past research has focused on the perspectives of manufacturers to understand product attributes that comprise the construct described as product advantage. This study investigated the components of product advantage from the perspective of the consumer and the significance of each component in explaining variance in product success.
A methodology and two classification toolsets were developed for the …

Virtual Design Verification And Process Improvement Of Composite Sheet Material Products Using Intelligent Finite Element Analysis (Ifea), Sathyanarayanan Narasimhan
Dissertations
Engineering design decisions influence more than 70% of product costs. Various computational analysis tools such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) are typically utilized, to achieve an effective design cycle. Literature review in design process indicates a striking reality that about 75% of design errors can be eliminated through analysis and about 20% of analyses are misrepresented, leading to inadequate or faulty design. Also, analyses in general, generate more information about the problem than is often looked into, leading to a vast potential to study the knowledge creation.
This research bridges these gaps in design process through efficient use of computer-based …
Optimum Failure Truncated Testing Strategies, Erik Kostandyan
Optimum Failure Truncated Testing Strategies, Erik Kostandyan
Dissertations
Accumulated fatigue damage on mechanical components due to random stress loads eventually causes failure. Therefore products with lower failure rates are more desirable. Testing mechanical components for their intended purpose under predetermined working conditions is a common practice used by industries to prevent failures. Fatigue tests are categorized as Time Truncated or Failure Truncated, known in the literature as Type I and Type II tests, respectively. In failure truncated tests, the mechanical components are tested until the desired number of results is obtained. The parameters of a typical failure truncated test include the capacity of the test facility, the actual …

Masters Theses
The Problem and Its Background
Introduction
A curriculum can be developed in several ways. The simplest method is to use the curriculum of another institution without modification. The hazard of such an approach lies in the possibility that the curriculum may not be a good one or, even if satisfactory for the original institution, may not fit into the conditions of the setting where it is to be used. For example, entrance requirements for institutions vary from country to country and from one institution to another.
Another method is to study a number of curriculums and develop a composite curriculum …

Chapter I
The Problem and Its Setting
During the past few years, nationally prominent industrial and educational leaders have been concerned with the present shortages of engineers and technically trained personnel. These leaders appear to be concerned with the utilization of manpower and in present and future educational patterns which will insure an ample supply of technically competent personnel.1
Staff members of Western Michigan University are also concerned with the technician. In fact, 243 students were graduated from thirteen Industrial Technology curriculums during the period of 1955 through 1959. It is believed that the school has been effective in …
