Simulation Analysis On Alternatives To Accelerate The Passenger Flow In Security Checkpoints, Maria Luisa Janer Rubio Aug 2015

Simulation Analysis On Alternatives To Accelerate The Passenger Flow In Security Checkpoints, Maria Luisa Janer Rubio

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This study consists of discrete event simulation analysis of two alternative solutions designed to mitigate the congestion of passengers in the exit roller area of the security checkpoints. We study the particular case of Orlando International Airport, where this problem is prominent due to the high proportion of passengers who travel for leisure purposes. We developed three simulation models to represent the current configuration and the two alternative solutions. We compare the solutions to the current configuration by observing the response of the passenger throughput and passenger system time when performing a sensitivity on the percentage of passengers throughput. We …

Prioritizing Interdictions On A Shortest Path Network, Hayden D. Summerhill May 2015

Prioritizing Interdictions On A Shortest Path Network, Hayden D. Summerhill

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

We consider a variant to the shortest path network interdiction problem with symmetric information from Israeli and Wood (Networks 40, 97-111,2002) which arises in the context of nuclear smuggling prevention. In the basic shortest path interdiction problem, an interdictor has a limited number of interdictions with which he can lengthen arcs in a network in order to maximize the length of the network’s shortest path. This thesis considers the case in which the interdictor does not make all of the interdictions at once. Rather, the interdictor must make the interdictions over a set number of periods. Each period has a …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Dredge Fleet Scheduling, Kaitlin Denny May 2015

Sensitivity Analysis Of Dredge Fleet Scheduling, Kaitlin Denny

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Each year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is tasked with conducting maintenance dredging at hundreds of project sites throughout the country. The USACE must take into account factors such as environmental windows, increased transportation distances, increased operational time because of reduced vessel speeds, and personnel availability constraints. Environmental windows are intended to minimize the environmental impact of dredging while protecting biological resources and their habitats from potentially detrimental effects. The objective of this research is to perform sensitivity analysis of the performance of this model (cubic yards dredged) and how it is impacted by individual environmental window elimination …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Global Nuclear Detection Architecture Using Multiple-Objective Decision Analysis, Holly Hilliard Aug 2014

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Global Nuclear Detection Architecture Using Multiple-Objective Decision Analysis, Holly Hilliard

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The National Academy of Sciences has recently completed a study of the Global Nuclear Detection Architecture (GNDA) Metrics for the Department of Homeland Security's Domestic Nuclear Detection Office. This research uses the reports strategic framework and notional metrics (and additional information) to develop one overall measure of GNDA effectiveness. The potential benefit of one effectiveness measure would be ability to assess and communicate progress over time to the diverse group of national and international stakeholders and decision makers. This thesis uses the mathematics of multiple objective decision analysis to develop the effectiveness measure. A notional model was developed and it …

Models For Incorporating Block Scheduling In Blood Drive Staffing Problems, Yulong Su May 2014

Models For Incorporating Block Scheduling In Blood Drive Staffing Problems, Yulong Su

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this research is to develop decision support models that can be used by the American Red Cross (ARC) to schedule blood drives with improved shifts for the phlebotomists that staff them. Currently, phlebotomists work inconsistent hours and the ARC believes this is a leading cause of high turnover rates they are experiencing. For example, phlebotomists sometimes staff a blood drive until 11 PM one night and will have to work another at 8 AM the next morning. Assigning phlebotomists more consistent shifts in blocks of time will definitely improve their work schedule. Before switching to block scheduling, …

Uncertainty In Relief Supply Distribution, Christopher A. Bayles May 2014

Uncertainty In Relief Supply Distribution, Christopher A. Bayles

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

In the aftermath of a natural disaster the efficient planning of humanitarian relief efforts, e.g., delivering supplies to locations in need, can often mean the difference between lives being saved and lives being lost. In this paper we focus on two things: (1) appropriate objectives for routing problems in the context of delivery of relief supplies, and (2) how to handle the uncertainty associated with delivery of relief supplies after a disaster. Through applying uncertainty to parameters such as travel time between locations, we seek to examine if/how optimal routes change as a result of different objectives and the presence …

Disaster Relief Models: Location Of Points Of Distribution, Othman Boudhoum Dec 2013

Disaster Relief Models: Location Of Points Of Distribution, Othman Boudhoum

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This project consists of developing a Location Allocation model that focuses on determining the locations of relief supply Points of Distribution (PODs) after a natural disaster and how to assign demand points to them. According to FEMA, PODs are “centralized locations where the public picks up life sustaining commodities following a disaster or emergency” [1]. After each disaster, decisions have to be made to ensure a good delivery of resources in a timely manner. The road infrastructure may be damaged due to the disaster. Some roads might become inoperable, and some bridges are expected to fail. The model studied in …

Response Strategies For Critical Supply Shortages In Healthcare, Christopher Adkins May 2012

Response Strategies For Critical Supply Shortages In Healthcare, Christopher Adkins

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The shortage of critical medical supplies in healthcare facilities is of obvious concern to both medical professionals and patients. Speci cally, the growing concern in this area is motivated, at least in part, by our dependence on generic pharmaceuticals. In the absence of FDA restrictions on the production of critical generic goods (e.g. morphine), manufacturers possess little financial incentive to produce numerous products whose patents have expired, but remain critical to patient care. Therefore, faced with crippling shortages, hospitals are left seeking ad-hoc solutions for meeting patient demand of these items. This work considers quantitative response strategies to mitigate the …

Re-Estimating And Remodeling General Aviation Operations, Ryan Black May 2011

Re-Estimating And Remodeling General Aviation Operations, Ryan Black

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The objective of this project is to understand the usual or “acceptable” characteristics of general aviation flights and airports so that unusual activity can be detected, analyzed, and resolved. To do this, a quality control model may be built to determine whether an airport is at high risk for a terrorist attack. For an appropriate model to be built there must be an adequate amount of data that describes the general aviation airport and its operations. In order to facilitate this data the general aviation industry must “continue to improve intelligence and information sharing (Homeland Security Advisory Council 2008).” This …

Development Of A Ram Shared Service Tool For The Service Availability Of On-Board And Trackside Systems, Bailey Frazier May 2011

Development Of A Ram Shared Service Tool For The Service Availability Of On-Board And Trackside Systems, Bailey Frazier

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

A decision-support tool designed specifically to be used by technical specialists is an aid that would be helpful to many different companies, departments and projects – regardless of industry. With the intent of making manual processes quicker, less error-prone, and more userfriendly, decision-support tools are becoming more desired as they grow increasingly more common in the business world today.
The decision-support tool created for the purpose of this project is not an exception to any of these reasons. The ALSTOM Transport Information Solutions Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM) Shared Service Team bears the burden and tedious process of working with …

Incorporating Vertical Travel Into Non-Traditional Cross Aisles For Unit-Load Warehouse Designs, Kirby A. Clark May 2011

Incorporating Vertical Travel Into Non-Traditional Cross Aisles For Unit-Load Warehouse Designs, Kirby A. Clark

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

We propose modifications to the travel-time models for non-traditional warehouse layouts, Flying-V Fishbone, by incorporating a vertical travel dimension. The Flying-V model determines a cross aisle intersection for every picking aisle, while the Fishbone model determines a single point where the inserted cross aisle intersects the side of the warehouse. The shape and angle of the cross aisle is unrestricted for the Flying-V layout, while the angle is unrestricted for the Fishbone layout. The resulting non-linear optimization models incorporate Chebychev travel within the picking aisles. We compare both the shape of the aisle and the percent improvement over a traditional …

Simulation Of Multicultural Factors In Terrorism Networks, Jared Townsley May 2008

Simulation Of Multicultural Factors In Terrorism Networks, Jared Townsley

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

As globalization extends its influence to the far corners of the world, rapid developments and changes are taking place economically, socially, and environmentally. Cultural differences between and within organizations have become significant during the past few years as politics and marketplaces expand globally to include multiple nationalities, beliefs, and value systems. Unfortunately, terrorism has also felt the effects of globalization as organizations such as Al-Qaeda seek to expand their influence worldwide. Although a considerable amount of research has been conducted to identify key cultural factors that play major roles within organizations, simulation models that attempt to quantify cultural effects are …

Evaluating Arkansas Roadway Intersection Accidents Using Traffic Safety Analysis Methods: Generalized Estimating Equations And Roadway Observation, Jacob Mercer May 2008

Evaluating Arkansas Roadway Intersection Accidents Using Traffic Safety Analysis Methods: Generalized Estimating Equations And Roadway Observation, Jacob Mercer

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Considerable research has been made in recent years to evaluate road traffic safety. This is especially true with the United States, whose international rank in public safety is rapidly declining. In 2004, Arkansas ranked as the third highest in traffic fatalities among all the states. These are striking numbers that reflect the lack of attention that the state has received in terms of evaluating road traffic safety. Historically, this safety is measure by one of two methods: Statistical analyses of historical data or hands-on, observational analyses of present safety conditions. Rarely in research are both methods used within the same …
