The final finish operations have great significance in an overall manufacturing cycle of a product. The surface finishing and modification of surfaces have been the vital requirements of most of the products. The processes like shot peening, shot blasting, abrasive finishing and super finishing are being largely employed for such requirements. While final finishing of flat and outside surfaces are relatively easy and well established, the internal surfaces such as those of pipes is not so simple. In this paper, the application of low frequency alternative magnetic field has been explored for imparting surface modification including surface on the internal …

Underrepresented minority students pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related degrees at much lower rates compared to other segments of the population. To attract minority students, schools with STEM programs have resorted to myriad strategies such as cohorts, scholarships, mentoring, summer bridges, etc. Some schools have also sought innovative ways to develop a pipeline for graduates of two-year technical degree programs to matriculate into their four-year STEM programs and complete the remaining coursework leading to a BAT or BS degree. The University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) has adopted this latter innovative approach to increasing student enrollment in STEM …

The aim of this research is to study droplet spray characteristics of an atomization-based cutting fluid (ACF) spray system including droplet entrainment angle and flow development regions with respect to three ACF spray parameters, viz., droplet and gas velocities, and spray distance. ACF spray experiments are performed by varying droplet and gas velocities. The flow development behavior is studied by modeling the droplets entrainment mechanism, and the density and distribution of the droplets across the jet flare. Machining experiments are also performed in order to understand the effect of the droplet spray behavior on the machining performances, viz., tool life/wear, …
