Artificial Intelligence Decision Support And Pilot Performance, Aarohi Srivastava
Artificial Intelligence Decision Support And Pilot Performance, Aarohi Srivastava
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into aviation decision support systems (DSS) introduces new opportunities for pilots. While these systems offer considerable benefits, ensuring safe and optimal human-AI interaction requires further research. In the case of student pilots, trust calibration, system transparency, and appropriate reliance are all factors that influence the operational success of an integrated AI system. The systems are designed with the goal of decreasing cognitive workload, increasing situational awareness (SA), and providing data-based recommendations to help the pilot make quick and accurate decisions. This study will evaluate the effects of disclosed vs undisclosed AI accuracy on student …

Older adults (OAs) and drivers with disabilities (DwDs) often encounter challenges when customizing vehicle features (e.g., seat adjustment, lighting, climate control) because existing human-machine interfaces (HMIs) may not be designed to accommodate diverse sensory, motor, and cognitive capabilities. HarmonIQ is a biometric-based, user-centered vehicle customization system designed to improve accessibility and inclusivity for OAs and DwDs, developed by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in collaboration with Bethune-Cookman University (BCU). This research, supported in part by the EcoCAR Electric Vehicle Challenge, builds on Fall 2024 proofs-of-concept and Spring 2025 initial development of HarmonIQ and its components, namely the driver profile software and …
Shipboard Fire & Flooding: Evaluating Ai-Assisted Interface Design For Novice Designers, Rachel Phillips, Abigail Threat, Parneet Makkar, Jasmine Cruz, Matthew Skowronek
Shipboard Fire & Flooding: Evaluating Ai-Assisted Interface Design For Novice Designers, Rachel Phillips, Abigail Threat, Parneet Makkar, Jasmine Cruz, Matthew Skowronek
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
In naval damage control scenarios, operators in Damage Control Central (DCC) must interpret information from numerous sensors at once to detect hazards such as fire, flooding, or smoke while also maintaining ship stability. Designing interfaces that effectively support these tasks typically requires significant experience in human factors and military design standards. This project investigates whether AI-based design tools can help novice users produce functional interface prototypes more efficiently. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: an experimental group that used an assigned AI tool (Figma Make, Visily, or Claude) to generate and refine interface layouts, and a control group that …

Antropometri Tangan Penduduk Kota Ambon Sebagai Dasar Perancangan Ergonomis, Puan Maryam Leaongso, Wilma Latuny, Aminah Soleman
National Journal of Occupational Health and Safety
The limited availability of hand anthropometric data for the Indonesian population, particularly for the residents of Ambon City, may affect the accuracy of designing ergonomic products, work equipment, and public facilities. This study aimed to measure and analyze 25 hand dimensions of the Ambon City population based on gender and age, and to compare the measurement results with national anthropometric data. This research employed a quantitative method with a descriptive design through an anthropometric approach. Data were collected directly from 200 respondents, consisting of 100 females (aged 18–40 years) and 100 males (aged 20–40 years). Data analysis was performed using …
A Systems Perspective On Workstation Ergonomic Principles And Their Application In Emergency Care Environments, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna
A Systems Perspective On Workstation Ergonomic Principles And Their Application In Emergency Care Environments, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Background: Workstation ergonomic principles are commonly included in mandatory healthcare training programs. These recommendations—monitor height relative to eye level, neutral arm positioning, and adjustable seating—derive largely from occupational ergonomics literature designed to reduce musculoskeletal strain and improve comfort during computer work. Emergency Departments (EDs), however, represent dynamic environments with shared workstations and workflow interruptions that may influence the implementation of these recommendations.
Objective: To summarize the evidence supporting commonly taught workstation ergonomic principles and frame them within a systems perspective of ED work environments.
Methods: Narrative review of occupational ergonomics guidelines, ergonomic intervention studies, and human factors literature relevant to …
The Expectation Of Pain: Effects On Threshold, Tolerance, And Perception, Emma Paulus
The Expectation Of Pain: Effects On Threshold, Tolerance, And Perception, Emma Paulus
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Brain activity in pain-related regions of the cortex is thought to be influenced by interactions between expectations and incoming sensory information. However, the subjective experience of pain based on expectation has not been thoroughly explored. By changing visual and auditory cues to set expectation levels, a relationship between unconscious expectation of pain and actual sensory pain experienced was characterized. With IRB approval, volunteers were randomly and blindly grouped into low and high pain expectancy groups. Each group completed a survey about initial pain expectations before the muscle stimulation tolerance test, followed by a survey about actual pain perception after the …
Factors Affecting Pedestrian-Vehicle Conflicts: An Empirical Analysis, Christo D. Jamo
Factors Affecting Pedestrian-Vehicle Conflicts: An Empirical Analysis, Christo D. Jamo
Honors Scholar Theses
The number of pedestrian deaths increased by 78% between 2009 and 2023, while other motor vehicle crash deaths increased by 13% in the same period [1]. To identify potential pedestrian safety measures, this study analyzed the effects of location-based demographics, pedestrian phasing type, and other physical infrastructure and behavior variables on the probability of pedestrian-vehicle conflicts at signalized intersections, which is a surrogate measure of crash risk. Data were collected from 55 intersections in Connecticut, and the pedestrian-vehicle interactions were classified by severity based on the Swedish Traffic Conflict Technique: undisturbed passage, potential conflict, minor conflict, or serious conflict. Because …

Ergonomics Of A Pilot Workstation And Aircraft Interactions On A Cessna 172 Nav Iii, Nicole Beaulieu
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
This study analyzes the ergonomic aspects of the Cessna 172 Navigator III, a common flight training aircraft. The research investigated the interactions between pilots and the aircraft, focusing on pilot fatigue, workstation design, anthropometric data, and pilot interactions with controls. The study included surveys, interviews, and anthropometric measurements involving three pilots with varying experience levels, alongside physical measurements of the cockpit and a workstation ergonomic assessment.. Participants reported issues with limited physical space, particularly impactful to the pilot’s posture and ability to manipulate controls. Display visibility and interaction were areas of concern, often requiring pilots to lean in awkward postures. …
Digital Replica For Trustworthy Cooperative Autonomous Vehicles, Hady Farahat
Digital Replica For Trustworthy Cooperative Autonomous Vehicles, Hady Farahat
Theses and Dissertations
Trust in an automated system can be defined as confidence in a vehicle's reliability, safety, and predictability, which is essential for the acceptance and widespread adoption of fully autonomous vehicles (FAVs); without it, users might disengage from using autonomous vehicles or reject the technology altogether. Most of the previous research has focused on trust from an ego vehicle perspective.
However, next-generation vehicles are becoming more autonomous and connected, relying on vehicle-to-vehicle technology and vehicle-to-infrastructure technology with no human intervention. Hence, trust becomes more complex and fragile as multiple agents interact with each other, and it might become harder to establish …

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
This study evaluated the effectiveness of tactile cueing integrated into a pilot’s headset on pilot altitude control during simulated instrument conditions. Pilots typically rely on visual and auditory inputs to maintain situational awareness, but in high-workload or instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), these channels can become overloaded. One underutilized alternative for alerting is a tactile cueing apparatus. Using an X-Plane simulation of a Piper Archer equipped with a G-1000 avionics suite, 39 FAA-certified pilots flew two precision approaches. The experimental group (n = 20) received haptic cues via ear seal-embedded tactors when deviating from assigned altitude or glideslope. The control group …

Utilising Video Recordings To Assess Student Pilot Performance: An Exploratory Study During A Simulated Training Flight, Bradley Moncion, Shi Cao, Allison Lynch, Suzanne K. Kearns, Elizabeth Irving, Ewa Niechwiej-Szwedo
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
In ab initio flight training, the quality of the feedback a flight instructor provides their student is essential to their success. While other high-performance and safety-critical industries have incorporated the use of video recordings into training and assessments, the aviation industry generally has not. There are some studies addressing the potential benefits of video recordings in training professional pilots, but there is a lack of research at the ab initio level. In this study, five flight instructors assessed the performance of student pilots conducting a simulated training flight using a 4-point marking scale. The flights instructors were then tasked with …
