Grouping Techniques To Manage Large-Scale Multi-Item Multi-Echelon Inventory Systems, Anvar Abaydulla Dec 2016

Grouping Techniques To Manage Large-Scale Multi-Item Multi-Echelon Inventory Systems, Anvar Abaydulla

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Large retail companies operate large-scale systems which may consist of thousands of stores. These retail stores and their suppliers, such as warehouses and manufacturers, form a large-scale multi-item multi-echelon inventory supply network. Operations of this kind of inventory system require a large number of human resources, computing capacity, etc.

In this research, three kinds of grouping techniques are investigated to make the large-scale inventory system “easier” to manage. The first grouping technique is a network based ABC classification method. A new classification criterion is developed so that the inventory network characteristics are included in the classification process, and this criterion …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In a large indoor environment such as a sports arena or convention center, smooth egress of crowd after an event can be seriously affected if infrastructure such as elevators and escalators break down. In this paper, we propose a novel crowd simulator known as SIM-DISRUPT for simulating egress scenarios in non-emergency situations. To surface the impact of disrupted infrastructure on the egress of crowd, SIM-DISRUPT includes features that allow users to specify selective disruptions as well as strategies for controlling the distribution and egress choices of crowd. Using SIM-DISRUPT, we investigate effects of crowd distribution, egress choices and infrastructure disruptions …

An Agent-Based Approach To Human Migration Movement, Larry Lin, Kathleen M. Carley, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

How are the populations of the world likely to shift? Which countries will be impacted by sea-level rise? This paper uses a country-level agent-based dynamic network model to examine shifts in population given network relations among countries, which influences overall population change. Some of the networks considered include: alliance networks, shared language networks, economic influence networks, and proximity networks. Validation of model is done for migration probabilities between countries, as well as for country populations and distributions. The proposed framework provides a way to explore the interaction between climate change and policy factors at a global scale.

Traffic Simulation Model For Port Planning And Congestion Prevention, Baoxiang Li, Kar Way Tan, Trong Khiem Tran

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Effective management of land-side transportation provides the competitive advantage to port terminal operators in improving services and efficient use of limited space in an urban port. We present a hybrid simulation model that combines traffic-flow modeling and discrete-event simulation for land-side port planning and evaluation of traffic conditions for a number of what-if scenarios. We design our model based on a real-world case of a bulk cargo port. The problem is interesting due to complexity of heterogeneous closed-looped internal vehicles and external vehicles traveling in spaces with very limited traffic regulation (no traffic lights, no traffic wardens) and the traffic …

Time Series Classification Using Covariance Descriptors, Oluwaseun Winsala Dec 2016

Time Series Classification Using Covariance Descriptors, Oluwaseun Winsala

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a novel framework for time series classification that leverages the geometric structure of covariance matrices when labeling signals. Our method maps each signal to a new multivariate localized feature signal (MLFS) representation, from which we compute a covariance descriptor. This robust MLFS covarieance representation handles classification tasks where the sampling rates of the signals vary within a class or classes. We demonstrate that by simply using the k-nearest neighbor classification rule and multiclass kernel support vector machine with the Riemannian metric between the MLFS convariance matrices, which produces state-of-the-art results on a number of standard datasets. Moreover, …

Space Analysis And Research Centers (Sparcs) For Ssa Data And Analytics, Phillip Cunio, Brien Flewelling

Space Traffic Management Conference

Widespread use of massive data and increasing reliance on spaceborne infrastructure are two of the emerging megatrends of the early 21st century. However, both come with liabilities: movement and processing of large data volumes is very expensive, and reliance on spaceborne infrastructure adds risk that problems in the still incompletely-understood space domain might cause work disruptions.

ExoAnalytic proposes the use of Space Analysis and Research Centers (SpARCs) as a way to begin addressing both these issues. A SpARC is a facility which integrates volumes of data collected on satellites, centrally analyzes it, and makes available resulting useful information. The …

Examining Time To Evacuate Dynamically Activated Aircraft Hazard Areas, Zheng Tao, Granghuai Wang, Ashley G. Williams, Jon L. Semanek, Jonathan L. Schwartz

Space Traffic Management Conference

The growth in launch and reentry operations in the National Airspace System (NAS) presents the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with the challenge of integrating them more efficiently while also minimizing effects on other NAS users and maintaining safety. Currently, to maintain safety and account for unforeseen events such as vehicle breakup, the FAA segregates large amounts of airspace, called Aircraft Hazard Areas (AHAs), from traditional NAS users during launch and reentry operations. In order to minimize effects on NAS users, some AHAs during reentry are dynamically activated only if an unexpected event occurs. If a dynamic AHA is activated, then …

FAA frequently blocks strategically located airspaces to ensure operational safety in the vicinity of hazardous operations such as space launches and military exercises. As demand for access to airspace continues to rise, the need for, and the impact of blocked airspaces is likely to grow. Users such as space operators have no advanced insights into potential NAS impact of airspaces blocked due to their operations, nor do they possess ways to minimize it. This paper presents a model that would give users this insight. The model estimates levels of air traffic likely to intersect arbitrary airspace volumes on a daily …

Using Neural Networks To Forecast Volatility For An Asset Allocation Strategy Based On The Target Volatility, Youngmin Kim, David Lee Enke

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The objective of this study is to use artificial neural networks for volatility forecasting to enhance the ability of an asset allocation strategy based on the target volatility. The target volatility level is achieved by dynamically allocating between a risky asset and a risk-free cash position. However, a challenge to data-driven approaches is the limited availability of data since periods of high volatility, such as during financial crises, are relatively rare. To resolve this issue, we apply a stability-oriented approach to compare data for the current period to a past set of data for a period of low volatility, providing …

Furthermore, through clustering more appropriate grouping can be accomplished that can result in the better parameterization or estimation of models. This results in more effective prediction model development. Hence, in an effort to highlight this within the research herein, a Back-Propagation Neural Network is used to validate the classification achieved through the employment of MM tools. Specifically, the Granulometric Size Distribution (GSD) is used to achieve clustering of daily traffic flow patterns based solely on their …

Genetic Algorithm Optimization Of Sos Meta-Architecture Attributes For Fuzzy Rule Based Assessments, Andrew Renault, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The analysis of an acknowledged systems of systems (SoS) meta-architecture requires a preliminary method for potential trade space exploration to ensure compliance to evolving capability requirements. It is important to assess the SoS meta-architecture concept to ensure that it satisfies all stakeholder needs and requirements in the early stages of development. There are numerous linguistic terms called key performance attributes (KPAs) that could be used to assess the different aspects of the architectures capabilities, however, too many KPAs could complicate the assessment. The initial population of suitable KPAs is reduced through non-derivative based optimization employed by a genetic algorithm (GA) …

A System of Systems (SoS) architecting problem requires creating a selection of systems in order to provide a set of capabilities. SoS architecting finds many applications in military/defense projects. In this paper, we study a multi-objective SoS architecting problem, where the cost of the architecture is minimized while its performance is maximized. The cost of the architecture is the summation of the costs of the systems to be included in the SoS. Similarly, the performance of the architecture is defined as the sum of the performance of the capabilities, where the performance of a capability is the sum of the …

Evaluating Forecasting Methods By Considering Different Accuracy Measures, Nijat Mehdiyev, David Lee Enke, Peter Fettke, Peter Loos

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Choosing the appropriate forecasting technique to employ is a challenging issue and requires a comprehensive analysis of empirical results. Recent research findings reveal that the performance evaluation of forecasting models depends on the accuracy measures adopted. Some methods indicate superior performance when error based metrics are used, while others perform better when precision values are adopted as accuracy measures. As scholars tend to use a smaller subset of accuracy metrics to assess the performance of forecasting models, there is a need for a concept of multiple accuracy dimensions to assure the robustness of evaluation. Therefore, the main purpose of this …

A System of Systems architecting problem aims to determine a selection of systems, which are capable of providing a set of desired capabilities. A SoS architect usually has multiple objectives in generating efficient architectures such as minimization of the total cost and maximization the overall performance of the SoS. This study formulates a biobjective SoS architecting problem with these two objectives. Here, we consider that, by allocating funds to the systems, the SoS architect can improve the performance of the capabilities the systems can provide. The resulting architecting problem is a biobjective mixed-integer linear programming model. Specifically, the system selection …

In this paper, we propose a technology trajectory mapping approach using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) that scrutinizes technology progress patterns from multidimensional perspectives. Literature reviews on technology trajectory mappings have revealed that it is imperative to identify key performance measures that can represent different value propositions and then apply them to the investigation of technology systems in order to capture indications of the future disruption. The proposed approach provides a flexibility not only to take multiple characteristics of technology systems into account but also to deal with various tradeoffs among technology attributes by imposing weight restrictions in the DEA model. …
