A Robust Aggregation Approach To Simplification Of Manufacturing Flow Line Models, Paul Savory
A Robust Aggregation Approach To Simplification Of Manufacturing Flow Line Models, Paul Savory
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
One of the more difficult tasks facing a modeler in developing a simulation model of a discrete part manufacturing system is deciding at what level of abstraction to represent the resources of the system. For example, questions about plant capacity can be modeled with a simple model, whereas questions regarding the efficiency of different part scheduling rules can only be answered with a more detailed model. In developing a simulation model, most of the actual features of the system under study must be ignored and an abstraction must be developed. If done correctly, this idealization provides a useful approximation of …

Set-Up Saving Schemes For Printed Circuit Boards Assembly, Oded Z. Maimon, Ezey M. Dar-El, Tali F. Carmon
Set-Up Saving Schemes For Printed Circuit Boards Assembly, Oded Z. Maimon, Ezey M. Dar-El, Tali F. Carmon
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
Focusing on a basic printed circuit board (PCB) assembly line configuration characterized by very long set-up times, we examine two scheduling methods that can significantly reduce the set-up. Both methods -the Grouped Set-Up (GSU) method that has been recently introduced in the literature and the Sequence Dependent Scheduling (SDS) method, which has not been studied in this context -are based on component commonality among PCB types. Using the typical traditional scheduling method as a benchmark, the GSU and the SDS methods are compared in terms of three performance measures: line throughput, average work-in-process (WIP) inventory level, and implementation complexity. Guidelines …

A Dynamic Part Assignment Procedure In Machine Cell Formation, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi
A Dynamic Part Assignment Procedure In Machine Cell Formation, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi
Industrial Technology and Packaging
A major contributing factor to the under utilization of machines in cellular manufacturing is the development of long queues in front of some machines in machine cells. This paper presents a procedure which identifies such machines and redistributes their loads to alternative machines whenever feasible.

Integration Of Simulation Modeling And Computer Aided Production Management In Computer Integrated Enterprise, Emine Persentili, Sema E. Alptekin
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
Designing efficient and integrated manufacturing systems is the first step in attaining computer integrated enterprises (CIE). Integration of planning and implementation phases of manufacturing is essential for taking full advantage of the CIE. In order to design reliable and efficient manufacturing systems, the designers must consider the impacts of planning decisions made by computer aided production management (CAPM) modules on implementations held in manufacturing cells. This paper focuses on two issues. The first issue is importance and necessity of integrating CAPM modules with manufacturing cells. The second issue includes major features of the object-oriented approach and their relevance to our …

A Probabilistic Model And A Software Tool For Avcs Longitudinal Collision/Safety Analysis, H.-S. Jacob Tsao, Randolph Hall
A Probabilistic Model And A Software Tool For Avcs Longitudinal Collision/Safety Analysis, H.-S. Jacob Tsao, Randolph Hall
Faculty Publications
This paper develops a probabilistic model and a software tool for analyzing longitudinal collision/safety between two automated vehicles. The input parameters are the length of the gap between the two vehicles, the common speed prior to the failure, the reaction delay of the following vehicle and a bivariate pint distribution of the deceleration rates of the two vehicles. The output includes the probability of a collision and also the probability distribution of the relative speed at collision time.We will use this model to compare the safety consequences associated with the platooning and "free-agent" vehicle-following rules. We will also demonstrate that …

Introduction To Intellisim 2.0, Paul Savory
Introduction To Intellisim 2.0, Paul Savory
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
IntelliSIM is a prototype for a new generation of knowledge-based simulation tool that has been developed by the Systems Simulation Laboratory at Arizona State University. This tool is a computer environment that allows non-simulation trained modelers to predict the performance of a manufacturing system for which the necessary data is available. The system provides predictive data on such items as throughput time, queue levels, equipment utilization, reactions to machine failures, etc. With IntelliSIM, the benefits of discrete-event simulation can be exploited without requiring the high level of expertise necessary to successfully conduct a sound simulation study. The approach offered with …

Decision-Support Tools For Transferring Am/Fm/Gis To Small Communities, Steven W. Mccrary, Colin Othniel Benjamin, Peter J. Schmidt
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper examines several decision-support tools for transferring AM/FM/GIS technology to small communities. The term Computer-Assisted Spatial Information Systems (CASIS) provides a basis for a systematic categorization and definition of AM/FM/GIS systems that will serve to enhance small communities' understanding of these technologies for future decisions. The acronym CASIS includes such areas as database-management systems, automated mapping/facilities management/geographic information systems (AM/FM/GIS), and computer-aided drafting (CAD). Further, this paper reports the highlights of a survey that assesses the theory-practice gap in AM/FM/GIS usage among very small local government agencies. The survey uncovered an existing theory-practice gap: A, slow rate of system …
