When an instructor (with or without student input) specifies her office hours for the semester, the informal process used often results in students experiencing conflicts with other lectures, labs, drills, or office hours. The result of this conflict is the student either scheduling individual meetings with teachers outside of their office hours or students missing the opportunity to get assistance from the instructor all together. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is a modern technique of delivering radiation treatments to cancer patients. In IMRT technology, intensities must be chosen for the many small unit grids into which the beams are divided to produce a desired distribution of dose at points throughout the body with the goal of maximizing dose delivered to the tumor while sparing healthy tissues from excessive radiation and keeping dose homogeneous across the tumor. This dissertation consists of three assays. The first assay examines the robustness of lead time demand models for the continuous review (r;Q) inventory policy. A number of classic distributions as well as distribution selection rules are examined under a wide variety of demand conditions. First, the models are compared to each other by assuming a known demand process and evaluating the errors associated with using a different model. Then, the models are examined using a large sample of simulated demand conditions. Population growth in rural areas has led to new interest in rail transportation. Planning a passenger rail system involves numerous difficult decisions, most representing a trade-off between customer service and cost. In this work, we attempt to integrate many of these planning decisions. We consider strategic decisions such as station location and vehicle procurement, as well as tactical issues that include vehicle scheduling. Our integrated model exploits the linear network structure that best suits many rural American communities, including Northwest Arkansas. This research lays a foundation for the better understanding of the application and acceptance of more advanced inventory control practices within the health care supply chain. The demand characteristics and optimal control policies for pharmaceutical items within a multi-echelon provider network are examined within the framework of a case study. Demand forecasting algorithms were applied to forecast demand for inventory control procedures. A spreadsheet-based inventory planning tool was used to minimize the inventory holding and ordering costs subject to fill rate constraints. A relatively new consideration in proton therapy planning is the requirement that the mix of patients treated satisfy desired percentages. Since it is very dicult to satisfy an integer number of patients in light of these requirements, deviations from patient mix preferences and their impacts on operational capabilities are of particular interest to healthcare planners. Therefore, we propose a bicriteria mathematical programming model that determines an outpatient schedule maximizing the number of fractions and minimizing the deviations from the patient mix ratios over the planning horizon. We propose modifications to the travel-time models for non-traditional warehouse layouts, Flying-V Fishbone, by incorporating a vertical travel dimension. The Flying-V model determines a cross aisle intersection for every picking aisle, while the Fishbone model determines a single point where the inserted cross aisle intersects the side of the warehouse. The shape and angle of the cross aisle is unrestricted for the Flying-V layout, while the angle is unrestricted for the Fishbone layout. The resulting non-linear optimization models incorporate Chebychev travel within the picking aisles. We compare both the shape of the aisle and the percent improvement over a traditional …

Although a number of approaches have been developed to schedule tasks or jobs in many different manufacturing environments, increasing manufacturing complexity continues to motivate the need for additional scheduling heuristic research and development. This is particularly true for semiconductor manufacturing operations, arguably the most complex manufacturing environment in existence. Simulation-based scheduling has shown recent promise as a means for developing schedules for dynamic, stochastic manufacturing environments. I investigate the potential advantages and drawbacks of using simulation-based scheduling in a complex job shop as motivated by a semiconductor wafer fab.

Condition-based maintenance is growing in popularity as a means of improving equipment maintenance efficiency. Whether it be the maintenance of an airplane, a computer system, or any type of physical system, the prognostic tools associated with condition-based maintenance are subject to statistical error. These errors can lead to unnecessary preventive maintenance due to underestimation of system remaining life and unnecessary system failures due to overestimation of system remaining life. Perfluorocompounds (PFCs) are highly stable chemical compounds used in two integral steps of semiconductor manufacturing: chemical vapor deposition (CVD) chambers and etch chambers. Unfortunately, PFCs are also greenhouse gases linked to global warming. This, combined with their long atmospheric lifetimes gives them global warming potentials much higher than C02 the principal greenhouse gas. In a series of voluntary agreements with the United States and other national governments, the worldwide semiconductor industry has set a goal of reducing PFC emissions to 90% of their 1995 levels. Ground-based measurement of solar irradiance has been made using a spectroradiometer at wavelengths inapx-water absorption band. An algorithm is formulated to retrieve simultaneously the atmospheic water column density and Angstrom's turbidity coefficient. The transmission models used to account for the contribution from diverse atmospheic absorbing and scattering elements are presented.

Method For Determining Atmospheric Aerosol Optical Depth Using Solar Transmission Measurements, Felix Tendeku

A multiple wavelength radiometer instrumentation has been developed and used to measure solar irradiance in a water vapor absorption band in the near-infrared region. From these measurements the total atmospheric optical depth at each wavelength of observation is deduced using a linear least-squares fitting method. An iteration technique, based on a power law wavelength dependence of aerosol optical depth, is employed to retrieve aerosol optical depth from the total optical depth data. The technique permits simultaneous determination of precipitable water vapor amount.
