Potential To Increase Indigenous Biodiesel Production To Help Meet 2020 Targets – An Eu Perspective With A Focus On Ireland, Fionnuala Murphy

Fionnuala Murphy

The biofuels penetration rate target in Ireland for 2013 is 6% by volume. In 2012 the fuel blend reached 3%, with approximately 70 million litres of biodiesel and 56 million litres of ethanol blended with diesel and gasoline respectively. For January and February 2013, the blend rate had only reached 2.7%. The target of 10% by 2020 remains which equates to approximately 420 million litres. Achieving the biofuels target would require 345 ktoe by 2020 (14,400 TJ). Utilising the indigenous biofuels outlined in this paper leaves a shortfall of approximately 12,000 TJ or 350 million litres (achieving 17% of the …

This paper applies multiple Multi-Criteria Decision Management (MCDM) methods as a mechanism for identifying international markets for a producing nation’s food production. The specific application presented in this paper is for export markets of Iranian Pistachios; however, the model could be applicable across multiple food products and nations. Quantitative and qualitative criteria for market assessment were identified via a literature review. These include: 1) Regulation criterion, 2) Cultural criterion, 3) Transportation distance criterion, 4) Economy criterion, 5) Market potential criterion, 6) Politics criterion, 7) Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA). Shannon’s Entropy method was applied to weight criteria based upon the context-dependent …

Free Vibrations Of Interspersed Railway Track Systems In Three-Dimensional Space, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Alex M. Remennikov, Akira Aikawa, Hirotaka Sakai Apr 2014

Free Vibrations Of Interspersed Railway Track Systems In Three-Dimensional Space, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Alex M. Remennikov, Akira Aikawa, Hirotaka Sakai

Sakdirat Kaewunruen

Statistically, the actual loading conditions for railway tracks are rather dynamic and transient. The dynamic loadings due to train and track interactions redistribute from the rails to the rail pad, from the rail pad to the railway sleeper, and from the railway sleeper to the underlying ground. Commonly, railway sleeper in track systems is modeled as a beam on elastic foundation. This study makes use of a calibrated finite element model of railway sleepers in a track system, in order to investigate the resonant frequencies and associated mode shapes of railway components in interspersed track systems. The numerical model takes …

A Case Study Of Quality Control Charts In A Manufacturing Industry, Fahim Ahmwdl Touqir, Md. Maksudul Islam, Lipon Kumar Sarkar

Md. Maksudul Islam

Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a powerful collection of problem solving tools and the most sophisticated useful method in achieving process stability and improving the process capability through the reduction of variability. In the manufacturing process, every product doesn’t meet the desired range of quality consistently with the customer specification. This inconsistency occurs due to several sources of variations such as machines, operators, materials etc. The Ultimate target of control chart is to monitor the variations, and subsequently control the process. On account of applying SPC methods, this study deals with the control and improvement of the quality of bolt …

Forest Biomass Supply Chains In Ireland: A Life Cycle Assessment Of Ghg Emissions And Primary Energy Balances, Fionnuala Murphy

Fionnuala Murphy

The demand for wood for energy production in Ireland is predicted to double from 1.5 million m3 over bark (OB) in 2011 to 3 million m3 OB by 2020. There is a large potential for additional biomass recovery for energetic purposes from both thinning forest stands and by harvesting of tops and branches, and stumps. This study builds on research within the wood-for-energy concept in Ireland by analysing the energy requirements and greenhouse gas emissions associated with thinning, residue bundling and stump removal for energy purposes. To date there have been no studies on harvesting of residues and stumps in …

In Situ Performance Of A Complex Urban Turnout Grillage System Using Fibre-Reinforced Foamed Urethane (Ffu) Bearers, Sakdirat Kaewunruen

Sakdirat Kaewunruen

A full-scale trial to investigate in-situ behaviours of a turnout grillage system using an alternative material, ‘fibre-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU)’ bearers, has been carried out at a complex turnout junction under heavy mixed traffics at Hornsby, New South Wales, Australia. The turnout junction was renewed using the FFU bearers altogether with new special track components. Influences of the FFU bearers on track geometry (recorded by track inspection vehicle ‘AK Car’ and based on survey data), track settlement, track dynamics and acoustic characteristics have been measured. Operational train pass-by measurements have been analysed to evaluate the effectiveness of the replacement methodology. …

A Study On Correlation Between Consciousness Level And Performance Of The Worker, Devendra Kumar Chaturvedi Dr., Manish Kumar Arya

Manish Kumar Arya

Consciousness is significantly related to workplace performance among managers and workers. A considerable amount of research indicates that consciousness is one of the best predictors of performance in the workplace. Conscious employees are generally more reliable, more motivated, and harder working. They have also lower rate of absenteeism and counterproductive work behaviours such as stealing and fighting with other employees. Furthermore, consciousness is the only personality trait that correlates with performance across all categories of jobs. This is a pilot study to determine the workers performance related with consciousness. The consciousness will be experimentally measured using the self developed sensor …

Innovation And Learning Through Knowledge Gatekeepers:A Critical Examination Of The Relationship Betweentrust, Openness, And The Use Of Gatekeepers, Deogratias Harorimana Dr Aug 2013

Innovation And Learning Through Knowledge Gatekeepers:A Critical Examination Of The Relationship Betweentrust, Openness, And The Use Of Gatekeepers, Deogratias Harorimana Dr

Dr Deogratias Harorimana

The term ‘gatekeeper’ is widely used to represent a class of those who collect information, knowledge and contextualise this before they can share with the rest of the members of the organisation knowledge networks-both formal and informal organisations. In this study, it was found:

1 that there is a strong relationship between the openness of a given firm, as regards its knowledge sharing culture and level trust, and that firm’s use of knowledge gatekeepers

2 that the stage of a given firm’s growth corresponds to its strategic use of different types of gatekeeping.

In early and decline (renewal) stages, for …

A Value-Based Approach For Explaining The Adoption Intention Of Mobile Data Services, Mutaz M. Al-Debei

Dr. Mutaz M. Al-Debei

This study aims at explaining the factors affecting the adoption intention of mobile data services from the perspective of consumers as users. In this study we focus on the value users can potentially gain from using these services. We hypothesize that if we can examine users' utilitarian, hedonic, uniqueness, epistemic and economic value, then we can explain and predict their intention to use mobile data services. Our results show that utilitarian value is according to previous studies an important adoption factor. Additionally, economic value is also important and significant. Nevertheless, it seems that in our context, hedonic, uniqueness, and epistemic …
