A novel and compact interferometric refractive index (RI) point sensor is developed using hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) and experimentally demonstrated for high sensitivity detection and measurement of pure gases. To construct the device, the sensing element fiber (HC-PCF) was placed between two single-mode fibers with airgaps at each side. Great measurement repeatability was shown in the cyclic test for the detection of various gases. The RI sensitivity of 4629 nm/RIU was demonstrated in the RI range of 1.0000347–1.000436 for the sensor with an HC-PCF length of 3.3 mm. This study proposes a hybrid model that utilizes a physical model and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) approach to predict surface roughness during cylinder bore honing with an improved prediction efficiency of 90% compared to the standalone physical model. As a critical component of internal combustion engine technology, improvement in the surface roughness of cylinder bore can significantly reduce friction, wear and oil consumption, resulting in improved engine performance. The use of bio-based lubricants was analyzed to replace commercial mineral and synthetic-based lubricants. Lubricants were prepared by mixing three components of oil which comprise of base oil, additives, and solvent. In this research, four samples of base oil had been prepared with a different weight ratio of the PFAD-NPGester and Type II mineral. A modular torque measuring instrument capable of performing tapping torque tests (TTT) according to the ASTM D-5619 standard was designed, developed, and validated. With this new instrument, the performance of different lubricants can be evaluated in terms of frictional torque and energy consumption during tapping processes. Textile factories or Maquiladoras are very abundant and predominant in Central American economies. However, they all do not have the same standardized work schedule or routines.
