A Study On Implementation Of Co2 Abatement Solutions For Existing Ships, Young C. Kwon
A Study On Implementation Of Co2 Abatement Solutions For Existing Ships, Young C. Kwon
World Maritime University Dissertations
Recent high fuel prices and global economic recessions have driven shipowners to turn their attention to saving operational costs of their ships. For this reason, a variety of energy saving solutions has been developed and proposed in order to improve energy efficiency of ships. In addition, IMO have also proposed the best practices for energy saving solutions for existing ships through the SEEMP Guidelines. However, these proposed energy saving solutions (i.e. CO2 abatement solutions) do not give sufficient reliability due to the uncertainties of various parameters surrounding ships. These uncertainties may have a significant impact on effectiveness of individual energy …

A Building Energy Efficiency Optimization Method By Evaluating The Effective Thermal Zones Occupancy, Anna Laura Pisello, Michael Bobker, Franco Cotana
Publications and Research
Building energy efficiency is strongly linked to the operations and control systems, together with the integrated performance of passive and active systems. In new high quality buildings in particular, where these two latter aspects have been already implemented at the design stage, users’ perspective, obtained through post-occupancy assessment, has to be considered to reduce whole energy requirement during service life. This research presents an innovative and low-cost methodology to reduce buildings’ energy requirements through post-occupancy assessment and optimization of energy operations using effective users’ attitudes and requirements as feedback. As a meaningful example, the proposed method is applied to a …

Potential Energy Cost Savings By Use Of Building Roofs As Thermal Storage Of A Multi-Storied Building, Ahmad Adam Shelbaya
Potential Energy Cost Savings By Use Of Building Roofs As Thermal Storage Of A Multi-Storied Building, Ahmad Adam Shelbaya
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The thermal mass of a building has been used for more than two decades to shift the peak cooling load occurring during the day time to evening or night time. This is typically accomplished by use of concrete slabs embedded with pipes carrying hot or chilled water to meet the heating or cooling load, respectively. The water temperature drops across the coils and the frequency and intensity of room air circulation can be varied, along with controlling the gains through the windows, to shift the peak load hours to the nighttime when energy costs are cheaper and electric demands are …

Managing The Drivers Of Airflow And Water Vapor Transport In Existing Single-Family Homes (Revised), Florida Solar Energy Center, James Cummings
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Air and water vapor are transported into and within single-family homes as a result of pathways and driving forces. Without pathways, no air or water vapor transport could occur. Likewise, without driving forces, little or no air or water vapor transport will occur. Homes always have pathways and driving forces. This report focuses on managing the driving forces that move air and water vapor across the building envelope.

The Role Of Transport Phenomena In The Direct Oxidation Of Solid Fuels, Charles J. Banas
The Role Of Transport Phenomena In The Direct Oxidation Of Solid Fuels, Charles J. Banas
Master's Theses
Direct carbon fuel cells have shown promise for stationary power generation by utilizing the direct oxidation of a solid carbon fuel source at the anode. In laboratory settings, researchers have reported up to 300mA/cm2 of current density from these cells types which suffer from mass transport losses. This paper studies the surface properties of the solid fuel source, and describes the process of CO2 evolution through an analogy to pool boiling. In nucleate boiling (a subset of pool boiling) vapor bubbles grow from nucleation sites where gas are trapped in micro-cavities on the surface. Carbon surfaces possess these same features, …

More than one-half of all U.S. states have instituted energy efficiency mandates requiring utilities to reduce energy use. To achieve these goals, utilities have been permitted rate structures to help them incentivize energy reduction projects. This strategy is proving to be only modestly successful in stemming energy consumption growth. By the same token, community energy reduction programs have achieved moderate to very significant energy reduction. The research described here offers an important tool to strengthen the community energy reduction efforts—by providing such efforts energy information tailored to the energy use patterns of each building occupant. The information provided most importantly …

The utilization of new and alternative energy sources, specifically solar energy, has been on the rise and will continue to grow as we attempt to diminish our use and dependency on older, nonrenewable energy sources. One of the biggest challenges involved with the use of solar energy, or renewable energy in general, is how to provide this energy for general public use. Some of the limiting factors to this are the efficiency in which solar power can be harvested and converted into usable energy, and the cost of the technology to do this. Recent technological developments have included the microinverter, …

Energy Consumption In Large Wastewater Treatment Plants As A Function Of Wastewater Strength, Timothy Newell, Jacimaria R. Batista, Sajjad Ahmad, Walter Johnson
College of Engineering: Graduate Celebration Programs
Wastewater treatment (WWT) is an energy-intensive process. Strict standards for discharge often require energy intensive advanced treatment technologies. As a result, the number of plants using advanced treatment has increased (Figure 1).
Rising energy costs and concerns about greenhouse gas generation present a major incentive for tracking energy usage of WWT. Energy usage in plant, for instance, typically represents 18 to 30% of the operational budget.
Water efficient fixtures are also increasing loadings of organic matter to plants while lowering or maintaining overall liquid flow. The increased loadings have a significant impact on energy consumption.
Previous work has focused primarily …

Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage With Embedded Heat Pipes For Concentrating Solar Power Applications, Christopher Robak
Master's Theses
An innovative, novel concept of combining heat pipes with latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) for concentrating solar power (CSP) applications is explored. The low thermal conductivity of phase change materials (PCMs) used in LHTES presents a design challenge due to slow heat transfer rates during heating and cooling of the material. Heat pipes act to decrease the thermal resistance in the PCM, increasing the overall heat transfer rate sufficiently for use in CSP. First, a laboratory scale experiment is presented to validate the concept of using heat pipes in LHTES to reduce thermal resistance in PCM. A commercial scale …
