Miniature, Submersible Electromagnetic Pumps Of Molten Lead And Sodium For Gen-Iv Nuclear Reactors Development, Ragai M. Altamimi

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Heavy metals and alkali Liquid Metals are suitable coolants for Generation IV terrestrial nuclear reactors for operating at elevated temperatures for achieving plant thermal efficiency more than 40% and the thermochemical generation of hydrogen fuel. In addition, the low vapor pressure of these liquids eliminates the need for a pressure vessel and instead operates slightly below ambient pressure. A primary issue with the uses of these coolants is their compatibility with nuclear fuel, cladding and core structure materials at elevated temperatures more than 500oC. Therefore, in pile and out-of-pile test loops have been constructed or being considered for quantifying the …

The Development Of All Solid-State Optical Cryo-Cooler, Junwei Meng May 2020

The Development Of All Solid-State Optical Cryo-Cooler, Junwei Meng

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

This dissertation describes the development of an all solid-state optical cryo-cooler. Crystals of 10% wt. ytterbium-doped yttrium lithium fluoride (Yb3+:YLF) are used to cool an infrared HgCdTe sensor payload to an absolute temperature below 135 K, equivalent to delta T equal 138 K below ambient. This record level of cooling is accomplished with a single stage, in a completely vibration-free environment, with a corresponding cooling power of 190 mW. This milestone is made possible by the design and fabrication of an undoped YLF thermal link that efficiently shields the payload with a non-right angle kink from intense anti-Stokes …

Elevated Temperature Progressive Damage And Failure Of Duplex Stainless Steel, Darren P. Luke Dec 2018

Elevated Temperature Progressive Damage And Failure Of Duplex Stainless Steel, Darren P. Luke

Civil Engineering ETDs

Ductile failure of metals has been the focus of research efforts within academia and industry for many years since it is tremendously important for understanding the failure of structures under extreme loading conditions. However, limited research has been dedicated to elevated temperature ductile failure, which is critical for evaluating catastrophic events such as industrial, structural or shipping vessel fires. A detailed investigation was conducted on the structural response of Duplex Stainless Steel at elevated temperatures. The temperature dependence of elastic modulus, yield strength, ultimate strength, and ductility was measured up to 1000°C and a continuum damage plasticity model was developed. …

The Design Of A Solar Powered Air Conditioning System For An Albuquerque Office Building, Kuo S. Lee Jun 1958

The Design Of A Solar Powered Air Conditioning System For An Albuquerque Office Building, Kuo S. Lee

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The purpose of this investigation is to predict the performance of a solar powered jet refrigeration system for summer air conditioning, to measure the performance of the solar heat collector at the Bridgers and Paxton building in Albuquerque, and to design a Freon-12 ejector and generator for collection to that collector.

Analysis Of Cushioned Impact By Wave Propagation Techniques, Lowell P. Martin Jun 1958

Analysis Of Cushioned Impact By Wave Propagation Techniques, Lowell P. Martin

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

A typical problem of wave propagation which has received substantial attention concerns the longitudinal vibrations of a long, slender, uniform elastic rod after it has been dropped on one end.

The purpose of this investigation was to extend the problem to include the effect of cushioning material attached to the impacting end of a rod similar to that described above; and to conduct experiments designed to verify the analysis. This study is essentially the first step toward the analysis, by wave propagation methods, of many practical impact problems encountered in military airborne operations, experimental rocket programs, and the packaging industry.
