Depressurization Characteristics Of Steam-Based Reciprocating Vacuum Pump, Hongling Deng
Dissertations
This dissertation introduces a novel vacuum technology that leverages low-pressure saturated steam and cooling-controlled condensation, offering an efficient way to utilize low-grade thermal energy sources like waste heat, steam, or solar energy. At the heart of this technology is a unique duo-chamber vacuum pump system, featuring a reciprocating piston and a heat-conductive wall, designed to generate a vacuum through steam-condensation and cooling processes.
The core of this research lies in developing and validating mechanistic models for the steam-condensation depressurization process, a complex phenomenon involving phase change and transport mechanisms. Prior to this work, these mechanisms were not sufficiently modeled or …

Model Of Surface Waves On A Viscoelastic Material In A Cylindrical Container With Edge Constraints, Phillip Wilson
Model Of Surface Waves On A Viscoelastic Material In A Cylindrical Container With Edge Constraints, Phillip Wilson
All Theses
A theoretical model is developed for the resonant frequencies and mode shapes of pinned edge surface waves on a viscoelastic fluid contained in a finite depth cylindrical container. A boundary integral approach is used to map the governing equations to the domain boundary. The surface waves obey an eigenvalue operator equation that depends on four dimensionless parameters: the cylinder aspect ratio, the Bond number, the Ohnesorge number, and the elastocapillary number. A solution is constructed using a Rayleigh-Ritz variational procedure over a constrained function space, which is able to effectively incorporate the pinned edge boundary condition. Mode shapes are defined …

Accelerated Testing Of Solder Spheres Under Combined Temperature, Current, And Shear Stresses To Estimate Reliability, Collin Ruby
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With the densification of power electronics in the pursuit of decreased size and weight and increased efficiency, the need to investigate the properties of solder in packages with higher working temperatures and power densities is becoming apparent. Many research groups have conducted accelerated testing using methods such as thermal aging, shear or tensile stress tests, or electromigration tests, but relatively little research exists that considers the impact of several stresses in a combined study. This work aims to produce a novel method for estimating the lifetime of SAC305 solder joints under a combined stress scenario, which more accurately depicts the …
Trust-Based Variable Impedance Control And Passivity-Based Switched System Analysis For Human-Robot Cooperative Manipulation, Zhanrui Liao
Trust-Based Variable Impedance Control And Passivity-Based Switched System Analysis For Human-Robot Cooperative Manipulation, Zhanrui Liao
All Dissertations
Human-robot cooperative manipulation (co-manipulation) is one of the most prominent human-robot collaboration (HRC) tasks, where humans and robots manipulate the same object. Trust in HRC is crucial in determining human acceptance of robots and, hence, robot utilization. A probabilistic dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) trust model that integrates a time-series trust model is presented in this thesis. The trust model is learned using a continuous and normalized Baum-Welch (BW) algorithm, devised to account for the continuous nature of trust evolution and the limitations of the classic parameter learning method. To ensure a good HRC in co-manipulation, a variable impedance control framework …

Ultrasonic Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Additively Manufactured Polymer-Ceramic Composites, Christian Alexander Ruiz
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Digital light processing (DLP) is an attractive additive manufacturing technique due to its ability to create ceramic parts with complex geometries. DLP uses ultraviolet light to polymerize a slurry comprised of ceramic powder and photosensitive resin in layers to create solid parts. Printing parameters such as light intensity and exposure time are critical when producing these parts. Improper parameters can lead to over or under-curing, adversely impacting print quality and strength. Samples were printed at varying layer exposure times and then tested using ultrasonics to determine the degree of conversion. Additionally, ultrasonics were used as a non-destructive technique to obtain …

Safe Navigation Of Quadruped Robots Using Density Functions, Andrew Zheng
All Theses
Safe navigation of mission-critical systems is of utmost importance in many modern autonomous applications. Over the past decades, the approach to the problem has consisted of using probabilistic methods, such as sample-based planners, to generate feasible, safe solutions to the navigation problem. However, these methods use iterative safety checks to guarantee the safety of the system, which can become quite complex. The navigation problem can also be solved in feedback form using potential field methods. Navigation function, a class of potential field methods, is an analytical control design to give almost everywhere convergence properties, but under certain topological constraints and …

Design And Implementation Of An Optimization Platform For Common Fixed Photovoltaic Systems, Amro Ahmad Zahrawi
Design And Implementation Of An Optimization Platform For Common Fixed Photovoltaic Systems, Amro Ahmad Zahrawi
Mechanical Engineering Theses
Most household photovoltaic (PV) panels are installed in a fixed arrangement (fixed-type) based on a rule of thumb that comes from experience. The azimuth angle is usually set facing south with a tilt angle equivalent to the location's latitude. However, research shows that this is not the best for all geographical locations and during all hours of the day. Consequently, this brings up the hypothesis that optimizing the PV system's azimuth and tilt angles would ensure that the PV panel produces the most possible output as it is adjusted to face the sun most effectively during peak sunlight hours. This …

A Robust Model Reduction For The Optimal Boundary Feedback Stabilization Of Magnetizable Piezoelectric Beams, Md Rafi As Sadeq Ibn Emran
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The one-dimensional Partial Differential Equation (PDE) model of the wave equation, which describes wave dynamics of a wide-range of controlled mechanical systems, with a state feedback controller at its boundary is known to have exponentially stable solutions. Moreover, it is also reported that the several model reductions of the wave equation by the standard Finite Differences and Finite Elements approximations suffer from the lack of exponential stability (and exact observability without a state feedback controller) uniformly as the discretization parameter tends to zero. This is due to the loss of a uniform gap among the high-frequency eigenvalues as the discretization …
The Effect Of Deployment And Optimal Dispatch Of Shared Electric Shuttles On The Energy Efficiency Of Campus Transit, Robert Smith
The Effect Of Deployment And Optimal Dispatch Of Shared Electric Shuttles On The Energy Efficiency Of Campus Transit, Robert Smith
All Theses
A problem facing most public transit systems is low energy efficiency and the continued cycling of large transport vehicles such as buses at low occupancy when low demand for transport exists, wasting energy to no benefit. To remedy this issue, we propose a hybrid system consisting of existing diesel buses and automated electric shuttles to augment the system during off-peak hours. Due to their smaller size, higher occupancy, and more efficient powertrains, these shuttles could reduce the system energy used per passenger-mile-traveled. Automation removes the labor cost of drivers and, thus, eliminates the need to employ more drivers for the …
Co-Simulation Of Active Magnetic Bearing Rotors Using Adams, Msc Apex, And Simulink, Shea A. Charkowsky
Co-Simulation Of Active Magnetic Bearing Rotors Using Adams, Msc Apex, And Simulink, Shea A. Charkowsky
Master's Theses
Apex-Adams-Simulink co-simulation is applied to active magnetic bearing (AMB) rotors, demonstrating results unshown in literature, including continuous frequency response, and unavailable in known rotor dynamics software, including touchdown bearing impact. AMBs levitate rotors without contact, so they involve no friction, wear, lubrication, pollution, or shaft speed limits and are thus valuable for large, high-speed applications. Modeling of such rotors, necessary for safety and performance, simultaneously requires flexible body dynamics and advanced control design, but simulation programs tend to specialize in only one or the other. The co-simulation method combines multiple such programs—MSC Apex (finite element modeling), Adams (multibody dynamics), and …

All Theses
Soft vibrational robots are robots that incorporate compliant structures into their design and are driven by oscillating actuators. A recent, popular version of a soft vibrational robot is the bristle bot, which uses flexible bristles and a vibration motor to propel itself across surfaces and through pipes. This motion is primarily driven by stick-slip dynamics resulting from asymmetric frictional forces applied at the bristle tips. Depending on the frequency of vibration of the motor, the robot experiences various resonance regions allowing it to maneuver in different directions. Attaching bristles to all sides of the robot and placing it in a …

The system consistently achieved a significant temperature difference between the two ends of the stack in various ambient conditions, and it was quick …
Computational Study On The Acoustic Footprint Of Stenosis In Larger Arteries, Ahmed Abdelnabi
Computational Study On The Acoustic Footprint Of Stenosis In Larger Arteries, Ahmed Abdelnabi
Theses and Dissertations
We identify a new (acoustic) frequency-stenosis relations whose frequencies fall within the recommended auscultation threshold for stethoscopy (< 120 Hz) in this study. We demonstrate that these relations can be used to extend the application of phonoangiography (the measurement of the degree of stenosis from bruits) to stethoscopes that are broadly available. The First relationship is successfully identified using an analysis limited to the acoustic signature of the von Karman vortex street, which we automatically isolate using a metric based on an area-weighted average of the Q-criteria for the post-stenotic region. Specifically, we conduct LES-CFD simulations on simplified 2D internal flow geometries that represent blood vessels with varying degrees of stenosis. Then, using the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation, we extract their emitted acoustic signals, which we subtract from a pure signal (stenosis-free) at the same heart rate. Next, we transform this differential signal to the frequency domain and meticulously classify its acoustic signatures according to six stenosis-invariant flow phases of a cardiac cycle. Using our Q-criterion-based metric, we then automatically restrict our acoustic analysis to the noises emitted by the von Karman vortex street (phase 4). Our analysis of its acoustic signature demonstrates a strong linear relationship between the degree of steno- sis and its dominant frequency, which differs significantly from the break frequency and heart rate (previously identified dominant frequencies). For the Second relationship, we develop a frequency-stenosis scaling law for particularly supravalvular aortic stenosis that falls within the preferred frequency range (30-120 Hz) for echocardiography. We expand to 3D patient specific geometry using Simulia’s Living Heart Human Model (LHHM), which has an anatomically accurate aorta geometry. This LHHM geometry is modified with stenoses ranging from 30 to 80 percent (moderate to severe). For physiologically consistent hemodynamic boundary conditions, we expand the study to employ the Windkessel model, which has been implemented on Fluent using UDF. We demonstrate that physiological boundary conditions reduce simulation time significantly compared to static boundary conditions. The FW-H model extracted the flow-generated acoustic signal of the stenotic geometries and analysed it at clinically relevant receiver locations. A preferred receiver location consistent with clinical practise is determined, and a correlation between the degree of stenosis and the prevalent acoustic frequency (within the frequency range of 70-120 Hz) is established. The obtained second scaling law is shown to be clinically reliable in assessing stenotic severity. Future research will investigate incorporating the vibroacoustic role of adjacent organs and tissue to expand the clinical applicability of our findings. Expansion of clinical and numerical datasets will be pursued in future research to enhance the reliability of our scaling law, possibly by leveraging much-needed ML-based acceleration schemes.
