Improvement Of Microcracking And Mechanical Properties Of Tungsten Fabricated Via Laser Powder Bed Fusion Through Alloying With Reactive Secondary Constituents, William S. Mockel

Theses and Dissertations

Tungsten (W), a Group VI transition metal, possesses a number of advantageous properties, most notably its impressive mechanical performance at extreme temperatures. While tungsten's nature render traditional manufacturing methods difficult, additive manufacturing through laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) presents a promising avenue for fabricating tungsten components. However, the material’s high ductile-to-brittle transition temperature combined with the embrittling effect of impurities mean that the residual stresses imparted by LPBF result in microcracking in tungsten, degrading its usefulness. This study sought to improve the characteristics of LPBF-W through the removal of embrittling oxygen content via alloying with low concentrations of reactive elements, …

Advanced Air Preheater Sealing Systems For Enhanced Efficiency And Reliability In Thermal Power Plants, Pavan Kumar Ravulaparthy

Theses and Dissertations

Global electricity generation still relies heavily on thermal power plants, which consume vast amounts of fuel and emit significant amounts of carbon dioxide. A major but often overlooked source of inefficiency in these plants lies within the rotary regenerative air preheater (RAPH), a critical heat-exchange component where air leakage can exceed 20% in aging units. This leakage increases fuel consumption, parasitic fan power, and CO₂ emissions, while degrading boiler reliability.

This research introduces advanced adaptive sealing systems designed to mitigate these losses by dynamically compensating for rotor eccentricity, thermal distortion, and wear under harsh operating conditions. Brush seals, composed of …

Experimental Investigation And Evaluation Of Mechanical Properties And Microstructural Characterization On Chromium Molybdenum Steel Processed Through Laser Based Welding, Rakesh S

Theses and Dissertations

Creep Strength Enhanced Ferritic (CSEF) martensitic modified 9Cr-1Mo (P91) steel is extensively employed in fast breeder nuclear reactors and thermal power plants owing to its superior resistance to thermal fatigue and oxidation corrosion compared with other low-alloy steels. Despite its excellent high-temperature performance, the weldability of this steel remains a critical concern.

Conventional arc welding processes generate excessive heat input and complex thermal cycles, resulting in heterogeneous microstructures, retention of δ-ferrite, and subsequent degradation in service life. In contrast, high energy density beam welding techniques such as laser and electron beam welding offer precise thermal control and minimal heat-affected zones …

Mechanical Characterization Of Functionally Graded M300 Maraging Steel Cellular Structures, Bradley Jay Sampson

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional methods for increasing the energy absorption of a structure involve using a stronger material or increasing the volume of the structure, resulting in a higher cost or additional weight. Additive manufacturing (AM) can be used to maximize the energy absorption of materials with the ability to create complex geometries such as cellular structures. Previous work has shown that the energy absorption of additively manufactured parts can be improved through functionally graded cellular structures; however, this strategy has not been applied to ultra-high strength steel materials. This work characterizes the effect of multiple functional-grading strategies (e.g. uniform, rod-graded, size-graded) on …

Effects Of Cyclic Intercritical Annealing On Strength-Ductility Combinations In Medium Manganese Steels, Dawn Van Iderstine Aug 2022

Effects Of Cyclic Intercritical Annealing On Strength-Ductility Combinations In Medium Manganese Steels, Dawn Van Iderstine

Theses and Dissertations

Intercritically annealed medium manganese steels are a promising third-generation advanced high-strength steel candidate, relying on large fractions of Mn-enriched retained austenite for excellent strength-ductility combinations. The present study proposes a novel cyclic intercritical annealing to promote nucleation and efficient stabilization of austenite in a medium Mn microstructure. Design of the heat treatment is driven by the hypothesis that the distribution of ductile austenite is key in mitigating the strain incompatibility that accelerates failure in these steels. Development and preliminary testing of the heat treatment are first detailed and compared with literature results for equivalent isothermal annealing. The effects of cyclic …
