Congenital Epidermoid Cyst Results In Muscle Fusion Defect In The Upper Lip, Fatih Dogan, Ibrahim Hakan Bucak

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Epidermoid cysts are rarely detected malformations in the oral cavity. Their development sites are the sublingual, submaxillary, and submandibular spaces. In this paper, we report a three-month-old infant who was admitted to our hospital due upper lip swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging showed that she had a two-centimeter cystic lesion and fusion defects of orbicularis oris muscle. The cyst was surgically removed, and histopathological diagnosis was “epidermoid cyst.” In recent literature, we could not find reports related to orbicularis oris muscle fusion defects because of epidermoid cyst.

Seeing Red: Characterizing Historic Bricks At Sylvester Manor, Long Island, Ny 1652-1735, Martin John Schmidheiny

Graduate Masters Theses

The goal of this project is to develop a basic material characterization of the bricks excavated at the site of Sylvester Manor on Shelter Island, New York. In the early Manor period of 1650-1690, this early Northern provisioning plantation supplied Barbadian sugar operations and pursued mercantile interests independent of state control. Accounting for the range of production defects and material characteristics of the bricks suggests on-site or local manufacture as a regional ceramic industry developed. Qualitative visual analysis and petrographic thin-sections were used to characterize the internal composition, variation and production evidence in the bricks. Interpreting the results of this …

Sulfur Vacancies In Photorefractive Sn2P2S6 Crystals, Eric M. Golden, Sergey A. Basun, A. A. Grabar, I. M. Stoika, Nancy C. Giles, D. R. Evans, Larry E. Halliburton

Faculty Publications

A photoinduced electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum in single crystals of Sn2P2S6 (SPS) is assigned to an electron trapped at a sulfur vacancy. These vacancies are unintentionally present in undoped SPS crystals and are expected to play an important role in the photorefractive behavior of the material. Nonparamagnetic sulfur vacancies are formed during the initial growth of the crystal. Subsequent illumination below 100 K with 442 nm laser light easily converts these vacancies to EPR-active defects. The resulting S = 1/2 spectrum shows well-resolved and nearly isotropic hyperfine interactions with two P ions and two Sn ions. Partially resolved interactions …

Comparison In Factors Affecting Electrochemical Properties Of Thermal-Reduced Graphene Oxide For Supercapacitors, Peng Xiao, Da-Hui Wang, Jun-Wei Lang

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this paper, thermal-reduced graphene oxide (T-RGO) materials are synthesized by modified Hummer’s method, followed by thermal reduction under argon atmosphere at different temperatures. Electrochemical investigations show that, for T-RGO electrodes, good electrical conductivity is necessary and the surface functional groups play more significant role than the specific surface area in determining the electrochemical capacitance. The T-RGO obtained at 900 °C (T-RGO900) with a relatively high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area (314 m2·g-1) and a high electrical conductivity (2421 S·m-1) shows a low specific capacitance of 56 F·g-1. In comparison, the T-RGO obtained …

Journal of Electrochemistry

A new amperometric biosensor based on Nafion, thionine and latinum nanowires was developed for sensitive detection of glucose. Initially, positively charged thionine molecules were immobilized onto the surface of Nafion-modified glassy carbon electrode through the interaction between -SO3- and -NH3+, and glucose oxidase was then assembled on the modified electrode by using platinum nanowires as the cross-linkage. The preparation process was characterized by using cyclic voltammetry. Two enzymatic biosensors modified with and without platinum nanowires were used for the detection of glucose, and the improved analytical properties were obtained with platinum nanowires. Experimental results indicated …

Synthesis Of Namnpo4 By Spraying Drying-High Temperature Sintering And Its Electrochemical Performance, Xiao-Chen Lin, Xiao-Biao Wu, Xu Hou, Yong Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

As a cathode material for sodium ion batteries, NaMnPO4/C nanocomposite is successfully synthesized by the combination of spraying drying and high temperature sintering methods. The crystal structure of the as-synthesized phosphate material is confirmed as the natrophilite NaMnPO4, which possesses orthorhombic symmetry and Pmnb space group. It is shown that the precursors are hollow spherical particles and the obtained product consists of micro-scaled secondary particles, which are composed of NaMnPO4 nanocrystallites (tens of nanometres) and amorphous carbon networks. The ionic and electronic conductivities of NaMnPO4 are both effectively enhanced with the help of this …

Journal of Electrochemistry

Organic–inorganic hybrid films composed of polyaniline/nickel hexacyanoferrate (PANI/NiHCF) were fabricated on platinum substrates using unipolar pulse one-step electrodeposition. The deposition mechanism of hybrid film was proposed: Due to high potential of unipolar pulse electrodeposition, which avoided the reduction of Fe(CN)63-, the films with high electrocatalytic property and “insoluble” form of NiHCF were achieved. The morphology and composition of PANI/NiHCF hybrid film were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The effect of pulse potential on the electrochemical performance of hybrid film was investigated in detail. Results showed that …

Density Functional Theory Study On The Structures Of Solvent-Ion In The Electrolyte Of Lithium Ion Battery, Li-Dan Xing, Ru Yang, Xian-Wen Tang, Wen-Na Huang, Qi-Feng Liu, Qi-Peng Yu, Wei-Shan Li

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this work, the possible structures of solvent-ion complex, resulting from the electrostatic interaction in the propylene carbonate (PC) base electrolyte of lithium ion battery, have been investigated using the density functional theory. The calculated results show that the structure of solvent-ion complex depends on the solvent number. In the PC base electrolyte, maximum number of PC solvents that coexist in the Li+-solvent sheath is four. Additionally, the salt anion exists in a complex with the positively charged alkyl group of PC rather than in a free state. The calculated results give a good explanation to the reported …

Direct Electrochemistry And Glucose Biosensing Of Glucose Oxidase-Gold Nanoparticles Composite Synthesized By Enzyme Method, Fang He, Xiao-Li Qin, Ying-Chun Fu, Chao Chen, Qing-Ji Xie, Shou-Zhuo Yao

Journal of Electrochemistry

Glucose oxidase (GOx)-gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) composite was synthesized by the one-pot enzyme reaction in the mixture solution of NaAuCl4, GOx and glucose, and a Nafion/GOx-AuNPs/glassy carbon electrode was fabricated by the cast-coating method to examine the direct electrochemistry of GOx and the biosensing performance on this electrode. Such a GOx-AuNPs composite showed good direct-electrochemistry activity and bioactivity of GOx, probably because the enzyme-mediated AuNPs are close to the redox active centers of GOx. This enzyme electrode exhibited a linear amperometric response to glucose concentration (0.54 mmol·L-1) at -0.4 V (vs. SCE), and a detection limit of …

Resolve Mono-Electronic Process In The Voltammetric Behaviors Of Multi-Redox Bis-Coenzyme Q0, Hao Zhou, Yi-Tao Long Dec 2014

Resolve Mono-Electronic Process In The Voltammetric Behaviors Of Multi-Redox Bis-Coenzyme Q0, Hao Zhou, Yi-Tao Long

Journal of Electrochemistry

A widely held concept in electrochemistry is that truly elementary electron-transfer reactions always involve the exchange of one electron, therefore, an overall process involving a change of n electrons must involve n distinct electron-transfer steps. It is highly desirable to resolve multiple-step electron transfer reactions into each electron transfer step. The electrochemical behaviors of coenzyme Q0 and methylene-bridged Bis-coenzyme Q0 were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry in nonaqueous dichloromethane containing 0.15 mol·L-1 Bu4NClO4 as the supporting electrolyte. The redox reaction of coenzyme Q0 is well described as two chemically reversible …

Combined Effect Of Hot Extrusion And Heat Treatment On The Mechanical Behavior Of 7055 Aa Processed Via Spray Metal Forming, J. M. Schreiber, Z. R. Omcikus, Timothy Eden, Mala Sharma, V. Champagne, S. N. Patankar

Faculty Journal Articles

The mechanical properties of 7xxx series alloys can be tailored by subjecting them to deformation pro- cessing and heat treatment. In the present study dealing with spray forming of 7055 AA, extrusion and heat treatment involving solutionizing followed by peak aging resulted in improved mechanical behavior. The strength and ductility obtained are comparable to that of extruded and heat treated as-cast 7055 AA (Mondal et al., 2011) [1]. Spray forming offers an alternate route to develop high strength aluminum alloys and the current study is an attempt that draws closer to the target value of 1GPa strength and 10% ductility …

Interfacial Polymerization For Colorimetric Labeling Of Protein Expression In Cells, Jacob L. Lilly, Phillip R. Sheldon, Liv J. Hoversten, Gabriela Romero, Vivek Balasubramaniam, Brad J. Berron

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Determining the location of rare proteins in cells typically requires the use of on-sample amplification. Antibody based recognition and enzymatic amplification is used to produce large amounts of visible label at the site of protein expression, but these techniques suffer from the presence of nonspecific reactivity in the biological sample and from poor spatial control over the label. Polymerization based amplification is a recently developed alternative means of creating an on-sample amplification for fluorescence applications, while not suffering from endogenous labels or loss of signal localization. This manuscript builds upon polymerization based amplification by developing a stable, archivable, and colorimetric …

Solution Processed Cu(In,Ga)S2 Thin Film And Nanowire Photovoltaics, Johnthan Armstrong

Theses and Dissertations

Solar energy conversion is a highly attractive process for clean and renewable power for the future. Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S)2/CdS/ZnO has proven itself to be a worthwhile photovoltaic combination achieving record efficiencies upwards of 20%. These record efficiencies have been obtained through vacuum-based approaches. However, the high cost of vacuum-based fabrication processes become a barrier to affordable solar cells as an energy source. As a result, solution-based approaches have become the focus of many studies which have achieved record efficiencies of 15%. These solution-based approaches have not matched up with the vacuum-based approaches. In this work, we investigate methods to improve the solution-based …

Molecular-Like Hierarchical Self-Assembly Of Monolayers Of Mixtures Of Particles, P. Singh, Md. Shahadat Hossain, S. K. Gurupatham, K. Shah, E. Amah, D. Ju, M. Janjua, S. Nudurupati, I. Fischer

Publications and Research

We present a technique that uses an externally applied electric field to self-assemble monolayers of mixtures of particles into molecular-like hierarchical arrangements on fluid-liquid interfaces. The arrangements consist of composite particles (analogous to molecules) which are arranged in a pattern. The structure of a composite particle depends on factors such as the relative sizes of the particles and their polarizabilities, and the electric field intensity. If the particles sizes differ by a factor of two or more, the composite particle has a larger particle at its core and several smaller particles form a ring around it. The number of particles …

Influence Of The Temperature On Flow-Induced Crystallization Of Isotactic Polypropylene And Propylene–Ethylene Random Copolymer, Hugo Boitout Dec 2014

Influence Of The Temperature On Flow-Induced Crystallization Of Isotactic Polypropylene And Propylene–Ethylene Random Copolymer, Hugo Boitout

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

When flow is applied on a semi-crystalline polymer melt, it can greatly impact how it crystallizes its final properties. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the basic mechanism of flow induced crystallization (FIC). Only then will it be possible to predict final properties from the type of resin and processing conditions. Polypropylene is one of the most widely used polymers. Its processing generally involves subjecting the melt to intense flow fields, so FIC commonly occurs.

This study investigates the influence of temperature of shear and crystallization on the FIC behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP). Temperature is one of the main …

Analysis Of Vibration Generated By The Rubbing Of Flat Surfaces, Zahrul Fuadi

Makara Journal of Technology

Among the phenomena that occur as a result of contact between two surfaces is friction sound, in which surface roughness is of great importance. In this study, the parameter of contact stiffness is used to explain the frequency characteristic of vibration generated by the rubbing of flat surfaces under a small load. A 3-disk configuration rubbing method was used, which provides a unique characteristic of the system's frequency response function containing specific information about the rubbing vibrations. It is shown that the peak frequency of the rubbing vibration can be explained by using a two-degrees-of-freedom model incorporating the parameter of …

Microstructural Development Of Galvanized Steels Prepared With Ni-P Electroless Deposited Pre-Coatings, Chulaluk Somphotch, Suparoek Henpraserttae, Ekasit Nisarattanaporn, Yuttanant Boonyongmaneerat

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

An electroless pre-coating process is investigated as a possible method to prevent the sandelin effect, whereby steels containing silicon reacts rapidly with zinc during galvanization. From the microstructural and kinetics analysis, it is found that nickel-phosphorus electroless pre-coatings effectively serve as barriers to the reaction between Fe and Zn during galvanization, regardless of the silicon content in the steel substrates. Correspondingly, the coating thickness of the galvanized steels can be well-controlled.

Influence Of Hot-Dip Coatings On Mechanical And Corrosion Behaviors Of Steel Bolts, Thanit Kenhong, Gobboon Lothongkum, Yuttanant Boonyongmaneerat

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Steel is the main type of materials used in construction applications. Steel bolt, in particular, is used for fastening all the structural components together, and hence high durability in terms of the mechanical and corrosion resistance is inevitably critical. Carbon steel shows adequate mechanical strength, yet it is highly susceptible to corrosion. On the other hand, stainless steel is praised for its remarkable corrosion resistance, yet its relatively low yield stress exhibits a drawback. Hot-dip coating which provides Fe-Zn or Zn-Ni compounds in the coating interface could potentially mitigate the shortcomings of carbon steel and stainless steel by providing improved …
