A Remote Sensing Approach To Identifying Zones Of Instability In Mine Tailings Impoundments Using Multi-Sensor Satellite Data, Arden K. Pierce

Honors Theses

Mine tailings impoundments are structures built to contain the chemical and sedimentary byproducts generated by ore extraction activities. In this common method of mining waste storage, the tailings can be pumped into containment ponds and held behind earthen embankments to prevent the release of hazardous substances into the surrounding environment. Monitoring environmental factors that influence the structural integrity of these impoundments is essential for identifying areas vulnerable to instability and failure. Soil moisture is a factor that can affect the stability of mine tailings impoundment structures. This study evaluates the relationship between satellite-derived soil moisture and surface deformation at mine …

This article comprehensively examines the physical-mechanical and chemical properties of saline soils and their changes under the influence of moisture, as well as the impact of these changes on the foundations of buildings and structures. The study analyzes the variation of salinity levels over time due to prolonged water exposure and its effects on the stability and safety of structures, highlighting critical issues observed in regions of our country where saline soils are prevalent. Based on engineering-geological and hydrogeological research, solutions to minimize the consequences of salinity, determine soil deformation and strength characteristics, and ensure the safety of structures are …

Technical science and innovation

Currently, the hydrocarbon extraction industry is one of the most high-tech and rapidly developing sectors globally. The primary priority of this industry is to improve the technical and economic indicators of drilling and well operation. A particularly pressing issue is reducing well waterlogging and effectively isolating water flows, which contributes to optimizing hydrocarbon resource development. The introduction of modern equipment into production processes increases the demand for hydrocarbon resources, further complicating the challenges faced by the industry. This article highlights the relevance of applying innovative technologies to address well complications. Specifically, a new technology for isolating water flows and eliminating …

Central Asian seismologists show high magnitudes of potential future earthquakes (8 and higher), which corresponds to a probable level of macroseismic intensity of 9 or more points. Considering that zones with a high level of seismic hazard coincide with densely populated areas, as well as taking into account the seismic vulnerability of existing buildings, it can be stated that in Each existing level of seismic risk is very high and the consequences of future earthquakes can be catastrophic.

In recent years, large-scale comprehensive measures have been implemented in the Republic of Uzbekistan to develop the fields of seismology, ensure earthquake …

In the world, the modern development of the mining industry is directly related to the development of complex structural mineral deposits at great depths under conditions of geodynamic and geomechanical risk. Especially when mining mineral deposits underground at great depths, rock pressure is manifested in a dynamic form and there is a danger of rock bursts. The practice of mining in rock burst conditions and the fight against rock bursts have more than 100 years of history. However, many important issues are currently far from being resolved, which is due to the complex nature of the stress-strain state of the …

Insar As A Tool For Monitoring Hydropower Projects: A Review, J. Aswathi, R. B. Binoj Kumar, Thomas Oommen, E. H. Bouali, K. S. Sajinkumar

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

This paper provides a review of using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), a microwave remote sensing technique, for deformation monitoring of hydroelectric power projects, a critical infrastructure that requires consistent and reliable monitoring. Almost all major dams around the world were built for the generation of hydropower. InSAR can enhance dam safety by providing timely settlement measurements at high spatial-resolution. This paper provides a holistic view of different InSAR deformation monitoring techniques such as Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (DInSAR), Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar (GBInSAR), Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PSInSAR), Multi-Temporal Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (MTInSAR), Quasi-Persistent Scatterer …

Gis-Based Approach For Sinkhole Occurrence Risk Mitigation In Urban Areas For Historic Wieliczka Salt Mine, Agnieszka Malinowska, Ryszard Hejmanowski

Gorniy vestnik Uzbekistana

The article presents the results of the definition of a new methodology for assessing the risk of flooding a shallow slotted mine, which was carried out on the square above the Wieliczka Salt Mine, which is a world heritage. Vertical stresses are estimated on the basis of the theoretical state of rock mass deformation in the area of test chambers. In addition, the risk for chambers indicated in the zone was calculated based on the theory of arctic pressure. The final stage of the study was spatial analysis, which led to the identification of chambers, potentially subject to the influence …
