Earthquake-Resistant Design And Base Isolation Techniques, Christian George, Jacob Sweeten, Gabriela Cotto, Savion Stewart Aug 2026

Earthquake-Resistant Design And Base Isolation Techniques, Christian George, Jacob Sweeten, Gabriela Cotto, Savion Stewart

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Earthquake-resistant design has become a critical feature in construction near active fault lines, where seismic activity is most frequent and potentially destructive. In recent years, technological advancements have significantly improved methods for protecting buildings from earthquake damage. Among these innovations, base isolation systems have appeared as one of the most effective solutions. By decoupling a building from ground motion, base isolators reduce the transmission of seismic forces, helping to prevent structural damage and support building stability during earthquakes. In addition to improving safety, base isolation systems can also reduce long-term costs associated with earthquake-related repairs and maintenance. Base-isolated structures are …

Hurricane-Resilient Construction Practices In The Southeastern United States, Eleanor Hopkins, Jonathan Gildersleeve, Kieran Hemminger, Remingtin Rodriguez Aug 2026

Hurricane-Resilient Construction Practices In The Southeastern United States, Eleanor Hopkins, Jonathan Gildersleeve, Kieran Hemminger, Remingtin Rodriguez

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Hurricanes pose a significant threat to infrastructure and communities across the southeastern United States, causing billions of dollars in structural damage each year. High wind speeds, storm surge, and wind-driven rain frequently lead to roof failures, structural collapse, and severe interior water damage. As coastal populations continue to grow, improving the resilience of buildings in hurricane-prone regions has become a critical engineering and planning challenge. This literature review examines hurricane-resilient construction practices and evaluates strategies that improve structural performance during extreme weather events. Key areas of focus include continuous load path structural systems, reinforced roof-to-wall connections, elevated foundations to mitigate …

System And Method For Detecting Subsurface Voids Using Controlled Heat Addition, Chase Nilsson Aug 2026

System And Method For Detecting Subsurface Voids Using Controlled Heat Addition, Chase Nilsson

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

This study evaluates controlled heat addition in a confined space to estimate enclosed volumes for irregularly shaped spaces. The intent is to detect hidden voids in cave environments. Conventional methods for identifying such voids are often costly, logistically difficult, and limited in accuracy. Preliminary experiments were conducted with a controlled heat source, a temporary thermal barrier to isolate the test chamber, and simple temperature sensors. Temperatures were recorded for the pre-test baseline, the heating interval, followed by a cooling period. The thermal response showed clear engineering trends that warrant further exploration and modeling. Preliminary results indicate that transient temperature changes …

Contrasting Coastal Dune Environments In Chile, Aurora Christianson Feb 2026

Contrasting Coastal Dune Environments In Chile, Aurora Christianson

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Emerging coastalization and urbanization threats to the prehistoric Concón Dunes and Humedal de Mantagua coastal area of Chile is being investigated by researchers via uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS). Four UAS were utilized: Anzu Raptor T, DJI Mavic 3E, DJI Mavic 3M, and DJI Air 3 to collect various images of the coastal dunes. Multispectral and RGB cameras gather images by photogrammetry to create orthomosaics and monitor vegetation indexes in Pix4Dmapper. Thermal cameras provided images in rainbow, white hot infrared, and black hot infrared schemes to monitor wildlife and vegetation. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was calculated to visualize overall …

Reducing Uncertainty In Sea-Level Rise Prediction: A Spatial-Variability-Aware Approach, Subhankar Ghosh, Shuai An, Arun Sharma, Jayant Gupta, Shashi Shekhar, Aneesh Subramanian

I-GUIDE Forum

Given multi-model ensemble climate projections, the goal is to accurately and reliably predict future sea-level rise while lowering the uncertainty. This problem is important because sea-level rise affects millions of people in coastal communities and beyond due to climate change's impacts on polar ice sheets and the ocean. This problem is challenging due to spatial variability and unknowns such as possible tipping points (e.g., collapse of Greenland or West Antarctic ice-shelf), climate feedback loops (e.g., clouds, permafrost thawing), future policy decisions, and human actions. Most existing climate modeling approaches use the same set of weights globally, during either regression or …

Analysis Of Soil From The Palouse Prairie Restoration Project: Sample Pp-3, Jarod Imel, Spencer Hagel, Keagan Ives, Richard Orndorff , Phd

2023 Symposium

The Palose Prairie Restoration Project is a project devoted to the restoration of 120 acres of land to the west of Eastern Washington University. This land is actively being restored to its once natural state for the purpose of recreational activities for the students attending EWU and the community members of Cheney, WA. Our group was tasked with conducting soil analysis testing from a soil sample at the restoration site. We used ASTM standardized testing during soil analysis and have compiled valuable information to assist in the restoration project.

Seismic Landslide Hazard Mapping For Greater Vancouver, British Columbia, Ali Fallah Yeznabad, Sheri E. Molnar, Hesham M. El Naggar Mar 2019

Seismic Landslide Hazard Mapping For Greater Vancouver, British Columbia, Ali Fallah Yeznabad, Sheri E. Molnar, Hesham M. El Naggar

Western Research Forum

The lower Mainland of southwest British Columbia (BC) hosts about 3.5 million people and significant infrastructures of national importance. Southwestern BC has the highest seismic risk in Canada with significant potential to cause earthquake-induced hazards including tsunamis, liquefaction and landslides. A Cascadia mega-thrust (MW 9) earthquake is predicted to generate $75 billion Canadian dollars in losses. This damage can be resulted from ground shaking or its secondary phenomena like landslides; ground shaking during earthquakes may trigger landslides that can damage or destroy buildings, bury roads and highways and kill and injure people. In Canada, during the past century and …

Assessing Slope Instabilities, Victoria Leffel, Joey Franzino

Purdue Road School

INDOT’s Geotechnical Services Section has recently implemented a slide ArcGIS Collector app to provide a systematic approach to collecting and managing unsafe or failed slopes/embankments needed for decision making. A brief background in Indiana landslide geology will be given, then we will review the process of how to inventory slopes through the Collector app and identify potentially hazardous slopes. The session will end with a discussion of current engineering practices INDOT is using to correct landslides.

Spatial And Temporal Storm Generation From A Stochastic View, Jiaxiang Ding, Josept D. Revuelta-Acosta, Engel Bernard Aug 2018

Spatial And Temporal Storm Generation From A Stochastic View, Jiaxiang Ding, Josept D. Revuelta-Acosta, Engel Bernard

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Precipitation is one of the most important parameters in the study of hydrology and most of the research has been done on daily storm generation. Current weather generation models are used to replicate daily or monthly time resolution, which is not able to show the variability within one day or one month. This project deals with sub-daily storm generation with finer resolution and more accurate estimation, which also requires an independent storm separation method. And the Monte Carlo correlated multivariate simulation is applied to compute the variables. The description is essential for soil erosion and water quality research. Another reason …
