Robust Gasification Trial Results For A Variety Of Difficult-To-Recycle Packaging-Related Materials, Bruce A. Welt Dec 2023

Robust Gasification Trial Results For A Variety Of Difficult-To-Recycle Packaging-Related Materials, Bruce A. Welt

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Currently, recycling requires nearly absolute sorting of materials to accommodate the limited capabilities of existing recycling infrastructure. Whether a material is “recyclable” depends more on the method of recycling than the material itself. Our dependence upon sorting has limited success of recycling and has stifled our ability to achieve circular economy sustainability with plastic packaging materials. Our dependence upon sorting is rooted in our material-specific recycling processes. However, newer robust recycling processes are commercially available that reduce or eliminate the need to sort waste, and can convert mixed waste into primary feedstock chemicals, such as methanol for subsequent manufacture of …

Detection And Identification Of Disturbances By Spectral Analysis Of Structure-Borne Noise During The Production Of A Sealing Seam, Felix Kruppa, Lars Meisenbach, Berend Oberdorfer Dr.-Ing., Bernd Wilke Prof. Dr.-Ing. Apr 2022

Dr.-Ing.

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

When sealing, disturbances or errors can occur that impair the quality of the sealing seam and, in the worst case, lead to leaks. It is therefore important to identify and eliminate defective packages during production and to minimize the elimination by readjusting machine parameters. The aim of this article is the clear identification of seam quality problems on a vertical forming, filling and sealing machine SVE2520 by evaluating process parameters during the manufacturing process. For this purpose, the structure-borne noise is measured for each seal in order to identify not-usual curves. These not-usual curves are related to different disturbances or …

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

In this work adjustments in the rotogravure printing process are proposed to the varnish water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) aiming to obtain results smaller than 20g/m²/24h. One case study was used for the propositions for improvements, where focused on varnish application process in a gravure printer for an eight-printing unit cartonboard packaging, maximum printing speed of 175 m/min and a 285 g/m² weight cartonboard. The possible variables that influenced the WVTR result were selected from the technical expertise of the people involved in the project, the analysis in the printing process with the application of directed trials using experimental designs …

Mechanical And Tribological Behaviour Of Treated And Untreated Moringa Oleifera Pods Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Polymer Composite For Packaging Applications, Prakash Sampath, Senthil Kumar V.S Dr Apr 2019

Mechanical And Tribological Behaviour Of Treated And Untreated Moringa Oleifera Pods Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Polymer Composite For Packaging Applications, Prakash Sampath, Senthil Kumar V.S Dr

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Researchers now focus on the use of natural fiber polymer composites materials for packing applications. This attention is due to their low cost and renewable characteristics. Fabrication of composites with the use of renewable resources has many benefits of alternating from an appropriate management and reduction in industrial wastages, ecofriendly behaviour to cost effectiveness. The artificial fibers in packing industries can be replaced by natural fibers in the areas where stiffness and high strength are not the primary requirement. In the last decade the use of Natural fibers in the place of artificial fibers for reinforcements in epoxy resin matrix …

Screening Algorithm Based On The Color Halftone Fluorescent Printing And Its Application In Packaging Design, Hu Yaojian, Liu Juan, Wang Ruojing, Zhong Yunfei

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Abstract:This paper analyzed the characteristics of colorless fluorescent ink and the existing color separation theory, so that colored additive method should be used in printing color pattern with colorless fluorescent ink as well as three-color screening separation type (red, green and blue). Considering the exhibition of the tone, this paper selected dot parallel screening method. At the same time, through comparing the properties of different dots, this paper adopted a special method of AM screening, using regular triangle as the basic dot model to a threshold matrix of AM screening. Finally, designing a screening algorithm which best suit the …

Developments And Properties Of Plastic Mimicking Biopolymers For Food Packaging Application, Daniel I. Hefft Apr 2017

Developments And Properties Of Plastic Mimicking Biopolymers For Food Packaging Application, Daniel I. Hefft

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Sustainability takes an ever increasing importance in the food industry. Here not only the selection of raw materials plays a role, but also packaging materials. Nowadays there is an increasing number of biodegradable and bio-compostable packaging materials available.

However, these materials are still not able to replace mineral oil based packaging materials completely, nevertheless they are becoming increasingly important, since there must be solutions to problems such as pollution of the oceans by plastic waste, growing piles of rubbish from growing population, etc.

The following literature review shows briefly recent developments on plastic mimicking biopolymers, as these materials guarantee great …

The Effect Of Creasing Lines On The Compression Strength Of Adjustable Height Corrugated Boxes, Péter Csavajda, Péter Böröcz, Ákos Mojzes, Bence Molnár Jan 2017

The Effect Of Creasing Lines On The Compression Strength Of Adjustable Height Corrugated Boxes, Péter Csavajda, Péter Böröcz, Ákos Mojzes, Bence Molnár

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Due to its high strength and low density, the corrugated fibreboard (CFB) box is one of the most popular types of packaging all over the world. This packaging device is able to fulfil a huge number of requirements of the logistic process, during the phases of handling, shipping and storage. In addition to this, corrugated packaging is easily machinable, so it is also suitable for special supply chains and products. These special needs include the requirement to fit to the inner measurements of the shipping device, e.g. the shipping container. This is particularly expected in case of less than container-load …

Elevated Test Pressure Significantly Reduces Dynamic Accumulation Oxygen Transmission Rate (Astm F3136) Measurement Time For Barrier Packaging Films, Bruce A. Welt Sep 2015

Elevated Test Pressure Significantly Reduces Dynamic Accumulation Oxygen Transmission Rate (Astm F3136) Measurement Time For Barrier Packaging Films, Bruce A. Welt

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Measurement of gas transmission rates of materials is important for successful package design. The dynamic accumulation (DA) method (ASTM F3136) is becoming increasingly popular for measuring oxygen transmission rate (OTR) due to its simplicity and low cost. However, measurement time increases with barrier properties of materials, limiting measurement throughput. A dynamic accumulation measurement prototype capable of operating up to 1,000 psig was developed in order to accelerate gas transfer by boosting concentration gradients via elevated absolute pressures. Results show that measurement results were independent of test pressure while measurement times were substantially reduced. These results also suggest that gas transmission …

Predictive Modeling Of Oxygen Transmission Through Micro-Perforations For Packaging Applications, Ayman Abdellatief, Bruce A. Welt, Jason Butler, Eric Mclamore, Arthur Teixeira, Sanjay Shukla

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Methods for creating precise perforations in respiring produce packaging are being increasingly adopted. Knowledge of oxygen transfer through perforated packaging and oxygen distribution in packages is necessary for successful packaging design of fresh produce. An approach to modeling perforated packaging performance was developed using a cylindrical chamber with precision perforations using Fick’s second law. The model was simulated using two techniques including Finite Element Method (FEM) using commercially available software and Finite Volume Method (FVM) through programming. Perforations were approximated as a source term in the second method. Both simulation techniques showed trends similar to experimental data.
