Defense By Deception Against Stealthy Attacks In Power Grids, Md Hasan Shahriar Nov 2020

Defense By Deception Against Stealthy Attacks In Power Grids, Md Hasan Shahriar

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cyber-physical Systems (CPSs) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are converging towards a hybrid platform that is becoming ubiquitous in all modern infrastructures. The integration of the complex and heterogeneous systems creates enormous space for the adversaries to get into the network and inject cleverly crafted false data into measurements, misleading the control center to make erroneous decisions. Besides, the attacker can make a critical part of the system unavailable by compromising the sensor data availability. To obfuscate and mislead the attackers, we propose DDAF, a deceptive data acquisition framework for CPSs' hierarchical communication network. Each switch in the hierarchical …

Edge Iot Driven Framework For Experimental Investigation And Computational Modeling Of Integrated Food, Energy, And Water System, Yemeserach Taye Mekonnen

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the global population soars from today’s 7.3 billion to an estimated 10 billion by 2050, the demand for Food, Energy, and Water (FEW) resources is expected to more than double. Such a sharp increase in demand for FEW resources will undoubtedly be one of the biggest global challenges. The management of food, energy, water for smart, sustainable cities involves a multi-scale problem. The interactions of these three dynamic infrastructures require a robust mathematical framework for analysis. Two critical solutions for this challenge are focused on technology innovation on systems that integrate food-energy-water and computational models that can quantify the …

Protection Of Active Distribution Networks And Their Cyber Physical Infrastructure, Hany Fawzy Kamel Habib Jun 2019

Protection Of Active Distribution Networks And Their Cyber Physical Infrastructure, Hany Fawzy Kamel Habib

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today’s Smart Grid constitutes several smaller interconnected microgrids. However, the integration of converter-interfaced distributed generation (DG) in microgrids has raised several issues such as the fact that fault currents in these systems in islanded mode are way less than those in grid connected microgrids. Therefore, microgrid protection schemes require a fast, reliable and robust communication system, with backup, to automatically adjust relay settings for the appropriate current levels according to the microgrid’s operation mode. However, risks of communication link failures, cyber security threats and the high cost involved to avoid them are major challenges for the implementation of an economic …

Game-Theoretic And Machine-Learning Techniques For Cyber-Physical Security And Resilience In Smart Grid, Longfei Wei

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The smart grid is the next-generation electrical infrastructure utilizing Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), whose architecture is evolving from a utility-centric structure to a distributed Cyber-Physical System (CPS) integrated with a large-scale of renewable energy resources. However, meeting reliability objectives in the smart grid becomes increasingly challenging owing to the high penetration of renewable resources and changing weather conditions. Moreover, the cyber-physical attack targeted at the smart grid has become a major threat because millions of electronic devices interconnected via communication networks expose unprecedented vulnerabilities, thereby increasing the potential attack surface. This dissertation is aimed at developing novel game-theoretic and …

Spectrum Sharing, Latency, And Security In 5g Networks With Application To Iot And Smart Grid, Imtiaz Parvez

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The surge of mobile devices, such as smartphones, and tables, demands additional capacity. On the other hand, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and smart grid, which connects numerous sensors, devices, and machines require ubiquitous connectivity and data security. Additionally, some use cases, such as automated manufacturing process, automated transportation, and smart grid, require latency as low as 1 ms, and reliability as high as 99.99\%. To enhance throughput and support massive connectivity, sharing of the unlicensed spectrum (3.5 GHz, 5GHz, and mmWave) is a potential solution. On the other hand, to address the latency, drastic changes in the network architecture is required. The …

Co-Design Of Security Aware Power System Distribution Architecture As Cyber Physical System, Tarek Youssef Apr 2017

Co-Design Of Security Aware Power System Distribution Architecture As Cyber Physical System, Tarek Youssef

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The modern smart grid would involve deep integration between measurement nodes, communication systems, artificial intelligence, power electronics and distributed resources. On one hand, this type of integration can dramatically improve the grid performance and efficiency, but on the other, it can also introduce new types of vulnerabilities to the grid. To obtain the best performance, while minimizing the risk of vulnerabilities, the physical power system must be designed as a security aware system.

In this dissertation, an interoperability and communication framework for microgrid control and Cyber Physical system enhancements is designed and implemented taking into account cyber and physical security …

Wide-Area Time-Synchronized Closed-Loop Control Of Power Systems And Decentralized Active Distribution Networks, Mehmet Hazar Cintuglu

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The rapidly expanding power system grid infrastructure and the need to reduce the occurrence of major blackouts and prevention or hardening of systems against cyber-attacks, have led to increased interest in the improved resilience of the electrical grid. Distributed and decentralized control have been widely applied to computer science research. However, for power system applications, the real-time application of decentralized and distributed control algorithms introduce several challenges. In this dissertation, new algorithms and methods for decentralized control, protection and energy management of Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) and the Active Distribution Network (ADN) are developed to improve the …

Fully Decentralized Multi-Agent System For Optimal Microgrid Control, Ricardo De Azevedo Mar 2016

Fully Decentralized Multi-Agent System For Optimal Microgrid Control, Ricardo De Azevedo

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In preparation for the influx of renewable energy sources that will be added to the electrical system, flexible and adaptable control schemes are necessary to accommodate the changing infrastructure. Microgrids have been gaining much attention as the main solution to the challenges of distributed and intermittent generation, but due to their low inertia, they need fast-acting control systems in order to maintain stability. Multi-Agent Systems have been proposed as dynamic control and communication frameworks. Decentralized arrangements of agents can provide resiliency and the much-desired “plug and play” behavior. This thesis describes a control system that implements droop control and the …

Time-Delay Switch Attack On Networked Control Systems, Effects And Countermeasures, Arman Sargolzaei May 2015

Time-Delay Switch Attack On Networked Control Systems, Effects And Countermeasures, Arman Sargolzaei

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, the security of networked control systems (NCSs) has been an important challenge for many researchers. Although the security schemes for networked control systems have advanced in the past several years, there have been many acknowledged cyber attacks. As a result, this dissertation proposes the use of a novel time-delay switch (TDS) attack by introducing time delays into the dynamics of NCSs. Such an attack has devastating effects on NCSs if prevention techniques and countermeasures are not considered in the design of these systems. To overcome the stability issue caused by TDS attacks, this dissertation proposes a new …
