Fault Location And Incipient Fault Detection In Distribution Cables, Zhihan Xu
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
A set of fault location algorithms for underground medium voltage cables, two incipient fault detection schemes for distribution cables and a state estimation method for underground distribution networks are developed in this thesis.
Two schemes are designed to detect and classify incipient faults in underground distribution cables. Based on the methodology of wavelet analysis, one scheme is to detect the fault-induced transients, and therefore identify the incipient faults. Based on the analysis of the superimposed fault current and negative sequence current in time domain, the other scheme is particularly suitable to detect the single-line-to-ground incipient faults, which are mostly occurring …

To reduce the cost of complex and long copper wiring, as well as to achieve flexibility in signal communications, IEC 61850 part 9-2 proposes a process bus communication network between process level switchyard equipments, and bay level protection and control (P&C) Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs). After successful implementation of Ethernet networks for IEC 61850 standard part 8-1 (station bus) at several substations worldwide, major manufacturers are currently working on the development of interoperable products for the IEC 61850-9-2 based process bus. The major technical challenges for applying Ethernet networks at process level include: 1) the performance of time critical messages …

Measurement Of Dynamic Temperatures And Pressures In Nuclear Power Plants, Hashem M. Hashemian

The dynamic response of the process sensors that supply real-time data to the safety systems in nuclear power plants (NPP) play a vital role in preventing plant accidents. If a critical process temperature, pressure, level, or flow experiences a step change, for example, the sensors that measure the process variable must act quickly to actuate the safety systems that will mitigate the consequence of an undesirable process excursion. The research conducted for this dissertation has been performed to ensure the prompt response of critical sensors by advancing, refining, validating, and implementing new methods for measuring the response time of temperature, …
Impact Of Geomagnetically Induced Currents On Power Transformers, Jonathan E. Berge
Impact Of Geomagnetically Induced Currents On Power Transformers, Jonathan E. Berge
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis deals with the impact of Geomagnetically Induced Current (GIC) on power transformers in electrical power systems. A simulator to calculate the flows of GIC in an electrical power network, based on an assumed or measured induced geoelectric potential is proposed. This simulator includes all needed mapping techniques to handle a system that cover a large geographical area.
A correlation between GIC and the reactive power absorbed in the core of the saturated transformer is proposed. That correlation is used to estimate GIC in a transformer utilizing existing reactive power measuring infrastructure within the electrical grid without the need …
