The paper presents technical studies performed to review the values of the Normal Infeed Loss Risk (NILR) and Infrequent Infeed Loss Risk (IILR) in the Transmission System Security Standard (TSSS). The objective is to facilitate the connection of the largest power station in Oman, which is Sur 2000 MW IPP, to the Main Interconnected Transmission System (MITS), while complying with the requirements of the TSSS. The full output of 2000 MW of Sur power plant is expected to available in 2015; therefore the MITS model of 2015 is used in the studies using the DIgSILENT professional software. The model includes …

The paper presents voltage and reactive power control in the Main Interconnected Transmission System (MITS) in the Sultanate of Oman. The objective is to improve voltage profile at substations supplying distribution companies and directly connected bulk customer. An objective function is used to maximize reactive power margin of generating units to maintain as much as possible reserves on different generators. The control parameters include existing voltage and reactive power control means, e.g. settings of generators’ excitation/AVR, transformer tap-changing, and capacitor bank switching. The constraints include operational limits of the above control devices in addition to allowable limits of busbar voltages, …

The paper concerns with the determination of Weather-Based Ampacity (WBA) of overhead line conductors in the Main Interconnected Transmission System (MITS) of Oman. The objective is to exploit the available capacity of existing overhead transmission lines, thus reducing investments in replacing conductors or constructing new circuits. Conductor parameters and weather data are collected to calculate the thermal rating of the of transmission lines. The weather data collected from the Directorate General of Meteorology and Air Navigation includes hourly wind speed and temperature over several years and locations in Oman. Analysis of Oman weather data has shown that there is an …

The paper presents steady-state and transient studies to assess the impact of a 200MW Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant connection on the Main Interconnected Transmission System (MITS) of Oman. The CSP plant consists mainly of a solar field with parabolic trough collectors, two thermal storage tanks, heat exchangers, piping systems, steam turbine, and electric generator. Stability Analysis Of A Unified Power Flow Controller, Omar H. Abdalla, Mohamed A. E. Ghazy, Lotfy M. Lotfy, Nermeen A. M. Hassan
Omar H. Abdalla
The paper concerns with stability analysis of a Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). A nonlinear model is described in the abc-reference frame and then transformed into the dq0-reference frame. The model includes shunt and series compensators of the UPFC. Stability analysis is presented first in a three-dimensional space of system parameters. A linearized model is obtained in state-space form to be used in small-signal stability studies. Effects of system parameters on stability are investigated using eigenvalue analysis. These include resistance, reactance, and modulation indices of the shunt and series components of the UPFC. Simulation results show that the stability of …

The paper presents a tutorial review of the basic operation, control functions and steady state performance of a Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). A typical circuit arrangement of a UPFC is given and principles of controlling active and reactive powers are described. The main functions of UPFC are analyzed; including voltage regulation, series reactive compensation, phase compensation, and combined actions. A simplified two-bus power system is considered to demonstrate the main effects of the UPFC. Studies and results are presented to show the wide range capabilities of the UPFC in controlling transmission active and reactive powers simultaneously and/or independently.

This paper presents a procedure to coordinated design of PSSs and SVCs in a multimachine power system. The aims of the proposed method are to find the best location and the optimal parameters of these compensators in order to improve the steady state and transient performances and also to increase the system damping over a wide range of operating conditions. The objective function of the GA allows the selection of the PSSs and SVCs to shift critical closed loop eigenvalues to the left-hand side in the complex s-plane. The multimachine power system considered in this study consists of nine buses, …
