The paper presents technical studies performed to review the values of the Normal Infeed Loss Risk (NILR) and Infrequent Infeed Loss Risk (IILR) in the Transmission System Security Standard (TSSS). The objective is to facilitate the connection of the largest power station in Oman, which is Sur 2000 MW IPP, to the Main Interconnected Transmission System (MITS), while complying with the requirements of the TSSS. The full output of 2000 MW of Sur power plant is expected to available in 2015; therefore the MITS model of 2015 is used in the studies using the DIgSILENT professional software. The paper presents voltage and reactive power control in the Main Interconnected Transmission System (MITS) in the Sultanate of Oman. The objective is to improve voltage profile at substations supplying distribution companies and directly connected bulk customer. An objective function is used to maximize reactive power margin of generating units to maintain as much as possible reserves on different generators. The control parameters include existing voltage and reactive power control means, e.g. settings of generators’ excitation/AVR, transformer tap-changing, and capacitor bank switching. The paper concerns with the determination of Weather-Based Ampacity (WBA) of overhead line conductors in the Main Interconnected Transmission System (MITS) of Oman. The objective is to exploit the available capacity of existing overhead transmission lines, thus reducing investments in replacing conductors or constructing new circuits. Conductor parameters and weather data are collected to calculate the thermal rating of the of transmission lines. This paper discusses potential extreme scenarios which could result in unstable conditions on the main interconnected electricity transmission system of Oman. Case studies on loss-of-stability scenarios between different parts of the network are examined. The objectives of the study are to identify possible locations of the electrical centre of swing and to develop an approach for controllable system splitting. A controllable splitting approach has been proposed and sensitivity analysis has been utilised to identify potential locations for controllable system splitting. The objective of this paper is to assess the impact of interconnecting Oman and United Arab Emirates (UAE) through the existing 220kV, 46.7km double circuit transmission line rated 762MVA for each circuit. A model is developed to represent both systems of Oman and UAE based on the EUROSTAG© software. Load flow and contingency studies are presented to evaluate the compliance of the interconnected system for security criteria N and N-1. Calculations are applied to two operating conditions (peak and minimum load) and for three energy exchange cases: no exchange and maximum exchanges in both directions. The paper presents simulation studies of installing a number of diesel-engine driven generating units at selected locations in the main transmission system of Oman. A total of 300MW generator units are proposed on a temporary basis to aid in meeting the peak demand in summer 2011. The paper presents steady-state and transient studies to assess the impact of a 200MW Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant connection on the Main Interconnected Transmission System (MITS) of Oman. The CSP plant consists mainly of a solar field with parabolic trough collectors, two thermal storage tanks, heat exchangers, piping systems, steam turbine, and electric generator. Two proposed locations are considered to connect the CSP plant to MITS: Manah and Adam 132/33kV grid stations in Al-Dakhiliah region. This paper presents modeling and control analysis of a combined Wind-H2 system connected to an electrical grid and supplying a local electric load. The system consists of a wind farm for electricity generation and an electrolyzer to produce hydrogen for a filling station. A computer program has been developed in MATLAB for simulating the operation and control of the integrated system. Energy balances and hydrogen flow balances are calculated for each time step based on a system model and the specified control strategy. The paper concerns with stability analysis of a Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). A nonlinear model is described in the abc-reference frame and then transformed into the dq0-reference frame. The model includes shunt and series compensators of the UPFC. Stability analysis is presented first in a three-dimensional space of system parameters. A linearized model is obtained in state-space form to be used in small-signal stability studies. Effects of system parameters on stability are investigated using eigenvalue analysis. This paper describes the development of a digital computer model representing the main electric transmission system in Oman. A commercially available DIgSILENT power system computation package is employed. A brief description of system is given, which includes generating units, transformers, transmission lines and loads. The paper presents a tutorial review of the basic operation, control functions and steady state performance of a Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). A typical circuit arrangement of a UPFC is given and principles of controlling active and reactive powers are described. The main functions of UPFC are analyzed; including voltage regulation, series reactive compensation, phase compensation, and combined actions. A simplified two-bus power system is considered to demonstrate the main effects of the UPFC. Studies and results are presented to show the wide range capabilities of the UPFC in controlling transmission active and reactive powers simultaneously and/or independently.

The aims of the proposed method are to find the best location and the optimal parameters of these compensators in order to improve the steady state and transient performances and also to increase the system damping over a wide range of operating conditions.
