Modeling Sustainability In Renewable Energy Supply Chain Systems, Fei Xie Dec 2014

Modeling Sustainability In Renewable Energy Supply Chain Systems, Fei Xie

All Dissertations

This dissertation aims at modeling sustainability of renewable fuel supply chain systems against emerging challenges. In particular, the dissertation focuses on the biofuel supply chain system design, and manages to develop advanced modeling framework and corresponding solution methods in tackling challenges in sustaining biofuel supply chain systems. These challenges include: (1) to integrate 'environmental thinking' into the long-term biofuel supply chain planning; (2) to adopt multimodal transportation to mitigate seasonality in biofuel supply chain operations; (3) to provide strategies in hedging against uncertainty from conversion technology; and (4) to develop methodologies in long-term sequential planning of the biofuel supply chain …

Life Cycle Assessment Projection Of Photovoltaic Cells: A Case Study On Energy Demand Of Quantum Wire Based Photovoltaic Technology Research, Shilpi Mukherjee Dec 2014

Life Cycle Assessment Projection Of Photovoltaic Cells: A Case Study On Energy Demand Of Quantum Wire Based Photovoltaic Technology Research, Shilpi Mukherjee

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With increasing clean-energy demand, photovoltaic (PV) technologies have gained attention as potential long-term alternative to fossil fuel energy. However, PV research and manufacture still utilize fossil fuel-powered grid electricity. With continuous enhancement of solar conversion efficiency, it is imperative to assess whether overall life cycle efficiency is also being enhanced. Many new-material PV technologies are still in their research phase, and life cycle analyses of these technologies have not yet been performed. For best results, grid dependency must be minimized for PV research, and this can be accomplished by an analytical instrument called Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

LCA is the …

Emergency Diesel-Electric Generator Set Maintenance And Test Periodicity, Stephen John Fehr Oct 2014

Emergency Diesel-Electric Generator Set Maintenance And Test Periodicity, Stephen John Fehr

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Manufacturer and industry recommendations vary considerably for maintenance and tests of emergency diesel-electric generator sets supporting critical operations power systems facilities. There is little consistency among sets of similar technology, and manufacturers and their representatives often provide contradictory guidance. As a result, periodicity of emergency diesel-electric generator set maintenance and tests varies considerably in practice. This work proposes and tests a research and analysis framework to develop parametric regression survival models of modern diesel-electric generator sets in emergency standby duty as a function of maintenance periodicity, test periodicity, and other predictors. Within this framework, predictors are developed from common maintenance …

Renewable Energy And Smart Grid Integration Through Advanced Power Electronics, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset Apr 2014

Renewable Energy And Smart Grid Integration Through Advanced Power Electronics, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset

Dr. Adel A. Elbaset

As electricity demands are increasing day by day causing unbalance in the present grid system which results in various causes like load shedding, unbalance voltage and power quality etc which ultimately affects the consumers. Now to avoid all such situations the only option is to meet the demand by increasing generation but, we are also lagging with the conventional sources so generating more power is also not convenient by conventional ways. Therefore, recent researches are interested in renewable energy system integrated with smart grid through advanced power electronic converters. Smart gird with renewable energy sources have been regarded as the …

Optimal Design Of A Pv/Fuel Cell Hybrid Power System For The City Of Brest In France, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset Apr 2014

Optimal Design Of A Pv/Fuel Cell Hybrid Power System For The City Of Brest In France, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset

Dr. Adel A. Elbaset

This paper deals with the optimal design of a stand-alone hybrid photovoltaic and fuel cell power system without battery storage to supply the electric load demand of the city of Brest, Western Brittany in France. The proposed optimal design study is focused on economical performance and is mainly based on the loss of the power supply probability concept. The hybrid power system optimal design is based a simulation model developed using HOMER. In this context, a practical load demand profile of Brest city is used with real weather data.

Position/Speed Sensorless Control For Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Machines, Yue Zhao Apr 2014

Position/Speed Sensorless Control For Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Machines, Yue Zhao

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Permanent-magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are widely used in industrial applications owing to their distinctive advantages, such as high efficiency, high power density, and wide constant power region. To achieve high-performance field oriented control, accurate rotor position information, which is usually measured by rotary encoders or resolvers, is indispensable. However, the use of these sensors increases the cost, size, weight, and wiring complexity and reduces the mechanical robustness and the reliability of the overall PMSM drive systems. The goal of the research for this dissertation was to develop a rotor position/speed sensorless control system with performance comparable to the sensor-based control …

A Review Of Parallel Operation Of Active Power Filters In The Distributed Generation System, Shafiuzzaman Khadem, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon Mar 2014

A Review Of Parallel Operation Of Active Power Filters In The Distributed Generation System, Shafiuzzaman Khadem, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon

Dr. Shafiuzzaman Khan Khadem

In this paper a technical review of parallel operation of Active Power Filter (APF) for harmonic power compensation in distributed generation (DG) network has been presented. Controlling methods and connection topologies with their pros and cons are described. Recent improvements in controlling and future trends for the application of APFs in distributed mode are also identified.
