Design Of System Level Control For A Residential Power Router, Fahad Hossain Dec 2014

Design Of System Level Control For A Residential Power Router, Fahad Hossain

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the overall power flow and load management system for a 2 kW residential power router. The objective is to satisfy the residential load demand with cost savings by managing the energy sources including PV, battery, generator, and grid. The power flow management system algorithm is developed both for grid-connected mode and island mode. This algorithm involves the battery state of charge estimation, available PV power, load demand and electricity grid pricing. The residential load management algorithm is also developed using PV power prediction and load power prediction acquired for a day.¬ A Labview GUI is also developed …

A Dc Distribution System For Power System Integration Of Plug-In Electric Vehicles; Modeling, Stability And Operation, Mansour Tabari Nov 2014

A Dc Distribution System For Power System Integration Of Plug-In Electric Vehicles; Modeling, Stability And Operation, Mansour Tabari

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis is mainly focused on (i) modeling of dc distribution systems for power system integration of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), (ii) proposing a method to enhance the stability of the dc distribution systems, and (iii) proposing an energy management strategy to control the power flow in the dc distribution system. The dc distribution system is expected to be more efficient and economical than a system of ac-dc battery chargers directly interfaced with an ac grid.

In the first part, a systematic method for developing a model for a dc distribution system, based on the configuration of the system is …

Comprehensive Statcom Control For Distribution And Transmission System Applications, Shubham Gupta Aug 2014

Comprehensive Statcom Control For Distribution And Transmission System Applications, Shubham Gupta

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis presents the development of a comprehensive STATCOM controller for load compensation, voltage regulation and voltage balancing in electric power distribution and transmission networks. The behavior of this controller is first validated with published results. Subsequently, the performance of this STATCOM controller is examined in a realistic Hydro One distribution feeder for accomplishing the compensation of both mildly and grossly unbalanced loads, and balancing of network voltages using PSCAD/EMTDC software. The STATCOM voltage control function is utilized for increasing the connectivity of wind plants in the same distribution feeder. The thesis further presents a frequency scanning technique for simple …

STAR Program Research Presentations

One of the current programs at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is the Linac Coherent Light Source, or LCLS. Using the existing hardware of the last third of their linear accelerator (or “linac”), SLAC has created one of the most energetic X-ray free electron lasers (or “FEL”). Since 2009, LCLS has used this FEL to perform a wide range of experiments across all sciences, most notably ultrafast filming at the molecular scale. As requests for beam-time with this laser increases, SLAC is purposing a linac upgrade to better match this demand. This upgrade, named LCLS-II, will replace existing copper radio frequency …

An Adaptive Kalman Filter For Voltage Sag Detection In Power Systems, Hisham Odeh Alrawashdeh Apr 2014

An Adaptive Kalman Filter For Voltage Sag Detection In Power Systems, Hisham Odeh Alrawashdeh

Dissertations

The exact values of the noise covariance matrix of the Kalman filter state vector Q and the measured signal noise covariance matrix R must be obtained in order to achieve the optimal performance of the Kalman filter. There have been many techniques and assumptions made to evaluate and compute Q and R. The effects of Q and R are investigated in detail in this dissertation. Based on these investigations, the Kalman filter has been modeled to detect the fundamental signal amplitude variations of power system signals. This technique helps in evaluating voltage sags in power systems.

Two algorithms are …

Integration Of Upqc For Power Quality Improvement In Distributed Generation Network – A Review, Shafiuzzaman Khan Khadem, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon Mar 2014

Integration Of Upqc For Power Quality Improvement In Distributed Generation Network – A Review, Shafiuzzaman Khan Khadem, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon

Dr. Shafiuzzaman Khan Khadem

In this paper a technical review of the integration of a Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) in a distributed generation network is presented. Although the primary task of UPQC is to minimize grid voltage and load current disturbances along with reactive and harmonic power compensation, additional functionalities such as compensation of voltage interruption and active power transfer to the load and grid have also been identified. Connection methodologies with their advantages and disadvantages are also described. Recent improvements in capacity expansion techniques and future trends for the application of UPQC in distributed modes are also identified.

Parallel Operation Of Inverters And Active Power Filters In Distributed Generation System: A Review, Shafiuzzaman Khan Khadem, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon Mar 2014

Parallel Operation Of Inverters And Active Power Filters In Distributed Generation System: A Review, Shafiuzzaman Khan Khadem, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon

Dr. Shafiuzzaman Khan Khadem

In this paper a technical review of parallel operation of power electronics inverters for load sharing conditions in distributed generation (DG) network is presented. Emphasis is given to parallel operation of Active Power Filters (APFs) as they are widely used to mitigate load current disturbances into DG networks. Discussions on recent advances in control strategies as applied to APFs are presented.

Multifrequency Averaging In Power Electronic Systems, Fei Pan Jan 2014

Multifrequency Averaging In Power Electronic Systems, Fei Pan

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Power electronic systems have been widely used in the electrical power processing for applications with power levels ranging from less than one watt in battery-operated portable devices to more than megawatts in the converters, inverters and rectifiers of the utility power systems. These systems typically involve the passive elements such as inductors, capacitors, and resistors, the switching electronic components such as IGBTs, MOSFETS, and diodes, and other electronic circuits. Multifrequency averaging is one of the widely used modeling and simulation techniques today for the analysis and design of power electronic systems. This technique is capable of providing the average behavior …
