Transformerless High-Power Medium-Voltage Multi-Module Pv Converters, Hasan Bayat Jul 2018

Transformerless High-Power Medium-Voltage Multi-Module Pv Converters, Hasan Bayat

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis is focused on the modular multilevel converter (MMC) for Photovoltaic (PV) applications. It is an attempt to address the issues associated with the modeling, control, and power mismatch elimination of the MMC-based PV systems. Firstly, a new real power reference generation scheme is proposed that creates a linear relationship between the real power reference of the system and the dc link voltage of the submodules. Further, a new power mismatch elimination strategy is proposed for the MMC-based PV system which ensures balanced currents are delivered to the host grid regardless of leg and arm power mismatches. The thesis …

Sensorless Rotor Position Estimation For Brushless Dc Motors, Iram G. Raza Apr 2016

Sensorless Rotor Position Estimation For Brushless Dc Motors, Iram G. Raza

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Brushless DC motor speed is controlled by synchronizing the stator coil current with rotor position in order to acquire an accurate alignment of stator rotating field with rotor permanent-magnet field for efficient transfer of energy. In order to accomplish this goal, a motor shaft is instantly tracked by using rotating rotor position sensors such as Hall effect sensors, optical encoders or resolvers etc. Adding sensors to detect rotor position affects the overall reliability and mechanical robustness of the system. Therefore, a whole new trend of replacing position sensors with sensorless rotor position estimation techniques have a promising demand.

A Dc Distribution System For Power System Integration Of Plug-In Electric Vehicles; Modeling, Stability And Operation, Mansour Tabari Nov 2014

A Dc Distribution System For Power System Integration Of Plug-In Electric Vehicles; Modeling, Stability And Operation, Mansour Tabari

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis is mainly focused on (i) modeling of dc distribution systems for power system integration of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), (ii) proposing a method to enhance the stability of the dc distribution systems, and (iii) proposing an energy management strategy to control the power flow in the dc distribution system. The dc distribution system is expected to be more efficient and economical than a system of ac-dc battery chargers directly interfaced with an ac grid.

In the first part, a systematic method for developing a model for a dc distribution system, based on the configuration of the system is …

Comprehensive Statcom Control For Distribution And Transmission System Applications, Shubham Gupta Aug 2014

Comprehensive Statcom Control For Distribution And Transmission System Applications, Shubham Gupta

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis presents the development of a comprehensive STATCOM controller for load compensation, voltage regulation and voltage balancing in electric power distribution and transmission networks. The behavior of this controller is first validated with published results. Subsequently, the performance of this STATCOM controller is examined in a realistic Hydro One distribution feeder for accomplishing the compensation of both mildly and grossly unbalanced loads, and balancing of network voltages using PSCAD/EMTDC software. The STATCOM voltage control function is utilized for increasing the connectivity of wind plants in the same distribution feeder. The thesis further presents a frequency scanning technique for simple …

Study Of Stability Analysis Of A Grid-Connected Doubly Fed Induction Generator (Dfig)-Based Small Wind Farm, Baishakhi Dhar Jul 2013

Study Of Stability Analysis Of A Grid-Connected Doubly Fed Induction Generator (Dfig)-Based Small Wind Farm, Baishakhi Dhar

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Wind is the most reliable, clean and fast-developing renewable energy source. The DFIG-based variable speed wind turbine system is now the most popular in wind power industry. With power being so in-demanding, a large wind farm needs to be developed to produce more power from a stable system. But before such a large wind farm is installed, better understanding is needed of the system’s intrinsic dynamic behavior, range of stability region and parametric effects on system stability. Hence, a small wind farm with two identical DFIG-based wind turbines connected to a grid network has been considered for this study.

Three-Phase Reduced Switch Topologies For Ac-Dc Front-End And Single-Stage Converters, Dunisha Wijeratne Jul 2013

Three-Phase Reduced Switch Topologies For Ac-Dc Front-End And Single-Stage Converters, Dunisha Wijeratne

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Conventional three-phase ac-dc converters have two converter stages. They have a front-end converter that converts the input ac voltage into an intermediate dc bus voltage and a second, back-end converter that converts this dc bus voltage into the desired isolated dc output voltage. The front-end converter also performs power factor correction (PFC) and shapes the three-phase input currents so that they are nearly sinusoidal and in phase with the three-phase input voltages. This allows the ac power source to be used in the most efficient manner.

The front-end ac-dc converter is typically implemented with six switches while the back-end dc-dc …

Technique For Measurement Of Weld Resistance For Ac Resistance Spot Welding Via Instantaneous Phasor Measurement, Mian Mohsin Irshad Aug 2012

Technique For Measurement Of Weld Resistance For Ac Resistance Spot Welding Via Instantaneous Phasor Measurement, Mian Mohsin Irshad

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The resistance measurement in the resistance spot welding (RSW), is an ongoing research topic. The high current flow during the welding process induces an electromagnetic field in the wires which are attached to the electrodes to measure tip voltage. This results an additional voltage drop which is proportional to the derivative of current. Also the presence of silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) in the welding power supply generates harmonics in both supply voltage and current. These issues together complicate the methods for resistance estimation.

A set of simultaneous linear equations is derived for the on-line measurement of dynamic resistance and induced …
