Improved Methodology For Conducted Emi Assessment Of Power Electronics And Line Impedance Measurement, Mark Anthony Didat
Improved Methodology For Conducted Emi Assessment Of Power Electronics And Line Impedance Measurement, Mark Anthony Didat
Theses and Dissertations
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), primarily common mode (CM), is problematic in a wide range of electronic circuits due to its propensity to radiate, particularly in high power applications. It is routine for much effort and resources to be dedicated to its characterization and reduction as EMI compliance is a requirement for most electronic systems and devices, including power electronics. Many well-known factors contribute to a system’s EMI performance including intentional coupling from system components as well as unintentional coupling from parasitics. Sources of intentional coupling may include Y-capacitors intended to mitigate EMI as part of a filter. Unintentional coupling is more …

Network Layer Reliability And Security In Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks, Jing Yang
Theses and Dissertations
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have become pivotal in precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, and smart healthcare applications. However, the challenges of energy consumption and security, particularly concerning the reliance on large battery-operated nodes, pose significant hurdles for these networks. Energy-harvesting wireless sensor networks (EH-WSNs) emerged as a solution, enabling nodes to replenish energy from the environment remotely. Yet, the transition to EH-WSNs brought forth new obstacles in ensuring reliable and secure data transmission.
In our initial study, we tackled the intermittent connectivity issue prevalent in EH-WSNs due to the dynamic behavior of energy harvesting nodes. Rapid shifts between ON and OFF …

Amorphous Boron Carbide-Amorphous Silicon Heterojunction Devices, Vojislav Medic
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation will show successful development and characterization of amorphous boron carbide-amorphous silicon heterojunction device with potential for neutron detection. The amorphous hydrogenated boron carbide (a-BC:H) has been extensively researched as a semiconductor for neutron voltaic device fabrication. Naturally occurring boron contains 19.8% of boron isotope B10 that has a high absorption cross section of thermal neutrons at lower energies, and boron carbide contains 14.7% of that B10 isotope. Therefore, as a semiconductor compound of boron a-BC:H has the ability to absorb radiation, generate charge carriers, and collect those carriers. Previous work on a-BC:H devices investigated the fabrication …

Improving object manipulation skills through hand-object interaction exercises is crucial for rehabilitation. Despite limited healthcare resources, physical therapists propose remote exercise routines followed up by remote monitoring. However, remote motor skills assessment remains challenging due to the lack of effective motion visualizations. Therefore, exploring innovative ways of visualization is crucial, and virtual reality (VR) has shown the potential to address this limitation. However, it is unclear how VR visualization can represent understandable hand-object interactions. To address this gap, in this paper, we present VRMoVi, a VR visualization system that incorporates multiple levels of 3D visualization layers to depict movements. In …

Self-Dual Systems For Backscattering Cancellation, Nasim Mohammadi Estrakhri
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Using carefully arranged electric and magnetic components, we have recently demonstrated that backscattering from otherwise arbitrarily shaped two- and three-dimensional structures can be fully eliminated. Here, first we investigate the possibility of creating self-dual microwave absorbers that may provide advantages compared to typical commercial magnetoelectric absorbers. Next, we demonstrate that the self-duality condition is not limited to homogenous structures and may be extended to effective material properties, opening the door to realistic implementation of these structures at microwave and optical frequencies.
