Implementation Of A Coal Level Sensing And Control System Comparing Range Sensor Modalities, Ralph Lee Taylor

Electrical Engineering Theses

A coal-fired power plant typically has silos, bunkers or stockpiles in which the fuel is placed for storage purposes. Real-time feedback sensors are utilized to sense the coal height so data can be sent to downstream systems for further processing. These systems are required to accurately sense the height of coal within the bunker or stockpile. The range information is then fed in a real-time fashion to a control system. Inaccurate measurements can result in severe environment and safety consequences. The coal-fired power plant application is especially daunting due to the particularly harsh operating conditions and reliability requirements. There are …

Analysis And Improvement Of Multiple Optimal Learning Factors For Feed-Forward Networks, Praveen Jesudhas Jan 2010

Analysis And Improvement Of Multiple Optimal Learning Factors For Feed-Forward Networks, Praveen Jesudhas

Electrical Engineering Theses

The effects of transforming the net function vector in the Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) are analyzed. The use of optimal diagonal transformation matrices on the net function vector is proved to be equivalent to training the MLP using multiple optimal learning factors (MOLF). A method for linearly compressing large ill-conditioned MOLF Hessian matrices into smaller well-conditioned ones is developed. This compression approach is shown to be equivalent to using several hidden units per learning factor. The technique is extended to large networks. In simulations, the proposed algorithm performs almost as well as the Levenberg Marquardt (LM) algorithm with the computational complexity …

Convert Uhf Rfid Tag From Passive To Semi-Passive Tag Using External Power Sources, Tanvi Mehta Jan 2010

Convert Uhf Rfid Tag From Passive To Semi-Passive Tag Using External Power Sources, Tanvi Mehta

Electrical Engineering Theses

In this thesis, I present novel circuit designs that convert a passive radio frequency identification (RFID) tag into a semi-passive RFID tag. Passive RFID tags are relatively inexpensive to purchase and to integrate into objects and devices. However, in some environments and on some objects the performance of the pure passive tags is not sufficient for the intended applications. A semi-passive tag, in comparison to a pure passive tag, has significantly greater communication range since the semi-passive tag derives its operational power from an on-tag power source instead of just from an interrogator's communication signal. As a result, semi-passive tags …

Capacitive Strain Sensors For Measurement Of Large Strain For Structural Health Monitoring, Clement Jacob

Electrical Engineering Theses

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is increasingly used to replace time based management, with a more efficient Condition Based Maintenance (CBM). The traditional scheme of scheduling down time for aircraft inspection or periodic evaluation of civil infrastructure costs millions of dollars in maintenance due to either downtime or lack of timely maintenance. SHM involves periodic, real time sampling and analysis of signals, from onboard sensors like accelerometer, pressure, strain or acoustic sensors to determine the condition of the structure. This can be used to carry out immediate repairs as well as predict failure. We report the development of a new high …

A High Fill Factor Cmos Image Sensor For Ir Camera Applications, Daniel Mcbride

Electrical Engineering Theses

In this thesis, a unit cell for high-SNR applications is presented. The proposed circuit is significantly smaller than other circuits that perform dark current subtraction because less circuitry is used inside the unit cell. The proposed circuit uses only two transistors and one resistor inside each unit cell to suppress the dark current. The size of the circuit in the layout is 25 um x 25 µm. With this new unit cell and routing approach, the size of the unit cell was reduced by 300% compared to other circuits which also suppress dark current.

Implementation And Performance Analysis Of 2-D Order 16 Integer Transforms In H.264/Avc And Avs-Video For High Definition Video Coding, Madhu Peringassery Krishnan

Electrical Engineering Theses

H.264/AVC and AVS-video are two video coding standards that have a wide range of applications ranging from high-end professional camera and editing systems to low-end mobile applications. They strive to achieve maximum compression efficiency without compromising the quality of video. To this end many coding tools are defined in them. Transform coding is one among them. Transform coding represents the signal/image (that is currently in time/spatial domain) in another domain (transform domain), where most of the energy in signal/image is concentrated in a fewer number of coefficients. Thus the insignificant coefficients can be discarded after transform coding to achieve compression. …

Electrical Engineering Theses

The development of methods for the re-use and modification of motion data is an activearea of research. Among these methods, we find automatic techniques to generate a spliced motion by combining different actions recorded in separate sessions. Motion splicing allows capturing motion independently and later combining them to create a new natural looking motion. Even though there have been a lot of research on motion editing techniques, less focus has been given to evaluate these edited motions. In this thesis, we present a novel methodology to quantitatively evaluate the synthesized motion generated by different motion editing techniques. We implemented three …

Low Complexity H.264 To Vc-1 Transcoder, Vidhya Vijayakumar Jan 2010

In order to operate at high efficiency quietly, the torque pulsation or torque ripple needs to be monitored and mitigated accurately. Magnitude of the torque ripple is influenced by the magnetic design (cogging torque) and excitation, and the pattern of ripple is affected by the machine's geometry (stator slots).Field reconstruction …

Optimal Output Gain Algorithm For Feed-Forward Network Training, Babu Hemanth Kumar Aswathappa Jan 2010

Optimal Output Gain Algorithm For Feed-Forward Network Training, Babu Hemanth Kumar Aswathappa

Electrical Engineering Theses

A batch training algorithm for feed-forward networks is proposed which uses Newton's method to estimate a vector of optimal scaling factors for output errors in the network. Using this vector, backpropagation is used to modify weights feeding into the hidden units. Linear equations are then solved for the network's output weights. Elements of the new method's Gauss-Newton Hessian matrix are shown to be weighted sums of elements from the total network's Hessian. The effect of output transformation on training a feed-forward network is reviewed and explained, using the concept of equivalent networks. In several examples, the new method performs better …

High Detectivity Pyroelectric Infrared Detector, Annand Balasubramaniyam Jan 2010

High Detectivity Pyroelectric Infrared Detector, Annand Balasubramaniyam

Electrical Engineering Theses

The sensors which measure physical quantities by sensing them as thermal quantities and then converting the thermal signals into electrical signals are called thermal sensors. One such type of thermal sensor is a pyroelectric infrared sensor. Thermal sensors are not popular mainly because they are slow devices, and they have low sensitivity when compared to photon detectors. One major advantage of thermal detectors over photon detectors is that they can operate at room temperature. This is one of the main motivations for this research. The aim of the thesis is to design an uncooled, high detectivity pyroelectric infrared detector. The …

H.264 Standard Based Side Information Generation In Wyner-Ziv Coding, Subrahmanya Maira Venkatrav Jan 2010

H.264 Standard Based Side Information Generation In Wyner-Ziv Coding, Subrahmanya Maira Venkatrav

Electrical Engineering Theses

The traditional video coding involves a high complexity encoder and relatively low complexity decoder. The complexity of the encoder is mainly due to motion estimation [3] and other prediction techniques employed . There is a new paradigm emerging in video coding - Distributed video coding (DVC). This is based on Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv6 theorems. In Wyner-Ziv video coding, encoder is less complex compared to the decoder. The decoder is very complex due to prediction involved for side information (SI) generation. There is lot of research done previously on linear density parity check codes (LDPC) and H.263 standard based SI generation …
