Adaptive Voltage Control Methods Using Distributed Energy Resources, Huijuan Li
Adaptive Voltage Control Methods Using Distributed Energy Resources, Huijuan Li
Doctoral Dissertations
Distributed energy resources (DE) with power electronics interfaces and logic control using local measurements are capable of providing reactive power related to ancillary system services. In particular, local voltage regulation has drawn much attention in regards to power system reliability and voltage stability, especially from past major cascading outages. This dissertation addresses the challenges of controlling the DEs to regulate the local voltage in distribution systems.
First, an adaptive voltage control method has been proposed to dynamically modify the control parameters of a single DE to respond to system changes such that the ideal response can be achieved. Theoretical analysis …
Characterization And Fabrication Of Active Matrix Thin Film Transistors For An Addressable Microfluidic Electrowetting Channel Device, Seyeoul Kwon
Doctoral Dissertations
The characterization and fabrication of active matrix thin film transistors (TFTs) has been studied for an addressable microfluidic electrowetting channel device as application. A new transparent semiconductor material, Amorphous Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide (a-IGZO), is used for TFT, which shows high electrical performance rather than amorphous silicon based TFT; higher mobility and even higher transparency. The purpose of this dissertation is to optimize each TFT process including the optimization of a-IGZO properties to achieve robust device for application. To minimize hysteresis of TFT curves, the gate dielectric is discussed extensively in this dissertation. By optimizing gas ratio of NH3SiH4, it …
Multi-Modular Integral Pressurized Water Reactor Control And Operational Reconfiguration For A Flow Control Loop, Sergio Ricardo Pereira Perillo
Multi-Modular Integral Pressurized Water Reactor Control And Operational Reconfiguration For A Flow Control Loop, Sergio Ricardo Pereira Perillo
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focused on the IRIS design since this will likely be one of the designs of choice for future deployment in the U.S and developing countries. With a net 335 MWe output IRIS novel design falls in the “medium” size category and it is a potential candidate for the so called modular reactors, which may be appropriate for base load electricity generation, especially in regions with smaller electricity grids, but especially well suited for more specialized non-electrical energy applications such as district heating and process steam for desalination. The first objective of this dissertation is to evaluate and quantify …
Scene Segmentation And Object Classification For Place Recognition, Chang Cheng
Scene Segmentation And Object Classification For Place Recognition, Chang Cheng
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation tries to solve the place recognition and loop closing problem in a way similar to human visual system. First, a novel image segmentation algorithm is developed. The image segmentation algorithm is based on a Perceptual Organization model, which allows the image segmentation algorithm to ‘perceive’ the special structural relations among the constituent parts of an unknown object and hence to group them together without object-specific knowledge.
Then a new object recognition method is developed. Based on the fairly accurate segmentations generated by the image segmentation algorithm, an informative object description that includes not only the appearance (colors and …
A High -Temperature, High-Voltage, Fast Response Time Linear Regulator In 0.8um Bcd-On-Soi, Chia Hung Su
A High -Temperature, High-Voltage, Fast Response Time Linear Regulator In 0.8um Bcd-On-Soi, Chia Hung Su
Doctoral Dissertations
The sale of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) has increased tenfold from the year 2001 to 2009 [1]. With this the demand for high temperature electronics has also increased dramatically making, high temperature electronics for HEV applications desirable in the engine compartment, power train, and brakes where the ambient temperature normally exceeds 150°C. Power converters (i.e. DC-DC converter, DC-AC inverter) inside the HEVs require gate drivers to control the power switches. An integrated gate driver circuit has been realized in 0.8-um BCD-on-SOI process. This gate driver IC needs a step-down voltage regulator to convert the unregulated high input DC voltage (VDDH) …
Microfluidic Manipulation By Ac Electrothermal Effect, Meng Lian
Microfluidic Manipulation By Ac Electrothermal Effect, Meng Lian
Doctoral Dissertations
AC Electrokinetics (ACEK) has attracted much research interest for microfluidic manipulation for the last few years. It shows great potential for functions such as micropumping, mixing and concentrating particles. Most of current ACEK research focuses on AC electroosmosis (ACEO), which is limited to solutions with conductivity less than 0.02 S/m, excluding most biofluidic applications. To solve for this problem, this dissertation seeks to apply AC electrothermal (ACET) effect to manipulate conductive fluids and particles within, and it is among the first demonstration of ACET devices, a particle trap and an ACET micropump. The experiments used fluids at a conductivity of …
An Adaptive Nonparametric Modeling Technique For Expanded Condition Monitoring Of Processes, Matthew John Humberstone
An Adaptive Nonparametric Modeling Technique For Expanded Condition Monitoring Of Processes, Matthew John Humberstone
Doctoral Dissertations
New reactor designs and the license extensions of the current reactors has created new condition monitoring challenges. A major challenge is the creation of a data-based model for a reactor that has never been built or operated and has no historical data. This is the motivation behind the creation of a hybrid modeling technique based on first principle models that adapts to include operating reactor data as it becomes available.
An Adaptive Non-Parametric Model (ANPM) was developed for adaptive monitoring of small to medium size reactors (SMR) but would be applicable to all designs. Ideally, an adaptive model should have …
A High-Temperature, High-Voltage Soi Gate Driver Integrated Circuit With High Drive Current For Silicon Carbide Power Switches, Mohammad Aminul Huque
A High-Temperature, High-Voltage Soi Gate Driver Integrated Circuit With High Drive Current For Silicon Carbide Power Switches, Mohammad Aminul Huque
Doctoral Dissertations
High-temperature integrated circuit (IC) design is one of the new frontiers in microelectronics that can significantly improve the performance of the electrical systems in extreme environment applications, including automotive, aerospace, well-logging, geothermal, and nuclear. Power modules (DC-DC converters, inverters, etc.) are key components in these electrical systems. Power-to-volume and power-to-weight ratios of these modules can be significantly improved by employing silicon carbide (SiC) based power switches which are capable of operating at much higher temperature than silicon (Si) and gallium arsenide (GaAs) based conventional devices. For successful realization of such high-temperature power electronic circuits, associated control electronics also need to …
An Effective Approach To Nonparametric Quickest Detection And Its Decentralized Realization, Dayu Yang
An Effective Approach To Nonparametric Quickest Detection And Its Decentralized Realization, Dayu Yang
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the study of nonparametric quickest detection and its decentralized implementation in a distributed environment. Quickest detection schemes are geared toward detecting a change in the state of a data stream or a real-time process. Classical quickest detection schemes invariably assume knowledge of the pre-change and post-change distributions that may not be available in many applications. A distribution free nonparametric quickest detection procedure is presented based on a novel distance measure, referred to as the Q-Q distance calculated from the Quantile-Quantile plot. Theoretical analysis of the distance measure and detection procedure is presented to justify the proposed …
