Tree-Based Partition Querying: A Methodology For Computing Medoids In Large Spatial Datasets, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Dimitris Papadias, Spiros Papadimitriou
Kyriakos MOURATIDIS
Besides traditional domains (e.g., resource allocation, data mining applications), algorithms for medoid computation and related problems will play an important role in numerous emerging fields, such as location based services and sensor networks. Since the k-medoid problem is NP hard, all existing work deals with approximate solutions on relatively small datasets. This paper aims at efficient methods for very large spatial databases, motivated by: (i) the high and ever increasing availability of spatial data, and (ii) the need for novel query types and improved services. The proposed solutions exploit the intrinsic grouping properties of a data partition index in order …

Anonymous Query Processing In Road Networks, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Man Lung Yiu
Kyriakos MOURATIDIS
The increasing availability of location-aware mobile devices has given rise to a flurry of location-based services (LBSs). Due to the nature of spatial queries, an LBS needs the user position in order to process her requests. On the other hand, revealing exact user locations to a (potentially untrusted) LBS may pinpoint their identities and breach their privacy. To address this issue, spatial anonymity techniques obfuscate user locations, forwarding to the LBS a sufficiently large region instead. Existing methods explicitly target processing in the euclidean space and do not apply when proximity to the users is defined according to network distance …

Continuous Monitoring Of Spatial Queries In Wireless Broadcast Environments, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Spiridon Bakiras, Dimitris Papadias
Kyriakos MOURATIDIS
Wireless data broadcast is a promising technique for information dissemination that leverages the computational capabilities of the mobile devices in order to enhance the scalability of the system. Under this environment, the data are continuously broadcast by the server, interleaved with some indexing information for query processing. Clients may then tune in the broadcast channel and process their queries locally without contacting the server. Previous work on spatial query processing for wireless broadcast systems has only considered snapshot queries over static data. In this paper, we propose an air indexing framework that 1) outperforms the existing (i.e., snapshot) techniques in …

A New Current-Voltage Relation For Duct Precipitators Valid For Low And High Current Densities, Gene D. Cooperman
Gene D. Cooperman
A closed-form analytic current-voltage formula for duct electrostatic precipitators is presented. A short discussion of previous theoretical and numerical solutions is given, followed by an explanation of the theoretical formula derived here. A comparison with experimental data is then given, showing that the present formula is accurate over a wide range of conditions, including wide plate spacing.

Rf Shields That Can Be Integrated With Ic Test Handlers, Chin-Leong Lim
Chin-Leong Lim
This paper describes several radio frequency interference shields that have been developed for integration with high-speed bulk-input turret-test IC handlers. The shields were developed to mitigate interference to noise figure measurements of Low Noise Amplifier components. Two categories of shielded enclosures were evaluated for shielding effectiveness and ease of incorporation into the existing machines and manufacturing processes. The first category enclosed the handler's working area in its entirety, while the second one enclosed the testboard only. Variation in the testboard shield design was required to suit different collet trajectories between handler models. The shielding effectiveness (SE) was measured according to …

A Neural Network Based Speed Control Of A Linear Induction Motor Drive, Adel A. Elbaset, Ahmed A. Hassan, Yehia S. Mohamed, T. Hiyama,, T. H. Mohamed
Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
In this paper, a general regression neural network (GRNN) based controller is used to control the speed and thrust output of the linear induction motor drive. The field orientation principle is used to asymptotically decouple the motor speed from the secondary flux. The idea of model predictive control technique is used for the training of the proposed controller. The motivation for using this control strategy for training the GRNN based controller is to reduce the effect of the uncertainty due to motor parameters variation and load disturbance. This newly developed design strategy combines the advantage of the neural networks and …

Joint Loop End Modeling Improves Covariance Model Based Non-Coding Rna Gene Search, Jennifer Smith
Joint Loop End Modeling Improves Covariance Model Based Non-Coding Rna Gene Search, Jennifer Smith
Jennifer A. Smith
The effect of more detailed modeling of the interface between stem and loop in non-coding RNA hairpin structures on efficacy of covariance-model-based non-coding RNA gene search is examined. Currently, the prior probabilities of the two stem nucleotides and two loop-end nucleotides at the interface are treated the same as any other stem and loop nucleotides respectively. Laboratory thermodynamic studies show that hairpin stability is dependent on the identities of these four nucleotides, but this is not taken into account in current covariance models. It is shown that separate estimation of emission priors for these nucleotides and joint treatment of substitution …
The Impact Of Quality Management Systems During A Pebble Bed Modular Reactor Project : A Case Study, Lwandiso Zamxaka
The Impact Of Quality Management Systems During A Pebble Bed Modular Reactor Project : A Case Study, Lwandiso Zamxaka
Lwandiso L Zamxaka
In the nuclear industry, Quality Management Systems are extremely important, especially if one wishes to improve public acceptance of radioactive solutions. There is normally minimum communication between the public and scientists, especially in nuclear science. People are not comfortable with nuclear technology, based on the past history of the Chernobyl catastrophe. Consequently, it is difficult to discuss important and sensitive issues like disposing of nuclear waste. Quality Management Systems can improve public confidence and communication. Integrated Management Systems in the project planning stage of the project can be a proactive step towards preventing unnecessary delays and costs. There is a perception that quality is …

More and more systems (e.g., aircraft, machinery, cars) rely heavily on software, which performs safety-critical operations. Assuring software safety though traditional V&V has become a tremendous, if not impossible task, given the growing size and complexity of the software. We propose that iSWHM (Integrated SoftWare Health Management) can increase safety and reliability of high-assurance software systems. iSWHM uses advanced techniques from the area of system health management in order to continuously monitor the behavior of the software during operation, quickly detect anomalies and perform automatic and reliable root-cause analysis, while not replacing traditional V&V. Information provided by the iSWHM system …

Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
The reliability system concern and CO2 emission reduction are still the main targets of optimization problem in the hybrid generation system components. This pa- per utilizes Genetic Algorithm (GA) method to determine the optimal capacities of PV system, battery bank and diesel generator (DG) unit according to the minimum cost ob- jective functions that relate to these two factors. In this study, the cost objective function includes the annual capital cost (ACC), annual operation maintenance cost (AOM), an- nual replacement cost (ARC), annual fuel cost (AFC), annual emission cost (AEC) and annual customer damage cost (ADC). The proposed method has …

Ultra-Thin-Film Aln Contour-Mode Resonators For Sensing Applications, Matteo Rinaldi, Chiara Zuniga, Gianluca Piazza
Matteo Rinaldi
This paper reports on the design and experimental verification of a new class of ultra-thin-film (250 nm) aluminum nitride (AlN) microelectromechanical system (MEMS) contour mode resonators (CMRs) suitable for the fabrication of ultra-sensitive gravimetric sensors. The device thickness was opportunely scaled in order to increase the mass sensitivity, while keeping a constant frequency of operation. In this first demonstration the resonance frequency of the device was set to 178 MHz and a mass sensitivity as high as 38.96 KHz⋅μm2/fg was attained. This device demonstrates the unique capability of the CMR-S technology to decouple resonance frequency from mass sensitivity.

This paper reports on the design and experimental verification of a new class of nanoscaled AlN Contour-Mode Resonant Sensors (CMR-S) for the detection of volatile organic chemicals (VOC) operating at frequencies above 1 GHz and connected to a chip-based CMOS oscillator circuit for direct frequency read-out. This work shows that by scaling the CMR-S to 250 nm in thickness and by operating at high frequencies (1 GHz) a limit of detection of ~35 zg/µm2 and a fast response time (<1 >ms) can be attained. In addition, the capability to detect concentrations of volatile organic compounds such as 2,6 dinitroluene (DNT) …1>

Matteo Rinaldi
This paper reports on the demonstration of a new class of ultra-thin (250 nm thick) super high frequency (SHF) AlN piezoelectric two-port resonators and filters. A thickness field excitation scheme was employed to excite a higher order contour extensional mode of vibration in an AlN nano plate (250 nm thick) above 3 GHz and synthesize a 1.96 GHz narrow-bandwidth channel-select filter. The devices of this work are able to operate over a frequency range from 1.9 to 3.5 GHz and are employed to synthesize the highest frequency MEMS filter based on electrically self-coupled AlN contour-mode resonators. Very narrow bandwidth (~ …
Computation Intelligence Method To Find Generic Non-Coding Rna Search Models, Jennifer A. Smith
Computation Intelligence Method To Find Generic Non-Coding Rna Search Models, Jennifer A. Smith
Jennifer A. Smith
Fairly effective methods exist for finding new noncoding RNA genes using search models based on known families of ncRNA genes (for example covariance models). However, these models only find new members of the existing families and are not useful in finding potential members of novel ncRNA families. Other problems with family-specific search include large processing requirements, ambiguity in defining which sequences form a family and lack of sufficient numbers of known sequences to properly estimate model parameters. An ncRNA search model is proposed which includes a collection of non-overlapping RNA hairpin structure covariance models. The hairpin models are chosen from …
Lna Based On A Low Cost (~Usd1.30) Commercial Gaas Phemt Mmic Offers Wideband (0.4~1.4 Ghz) And Room-Temperature Low Noise (~0.3 Db) Performances That Satisfy The Ska Low Cost And No-Cooling Requirement, Chin-Leong Lim
Chin-Leong Lim
Introduction: New generations of radio telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array consist of millions of receivers scattered over a continent. The array’s quantity and geographic considerations ruled out the traditional radio astronomy LNA implementation; i.e. costly InP devices cooled by high-maintenance closed-cycle helium (He) refrigerators. Several LNA designs have been proposed to address the cost and room-temperature operation constraints but none appear a clear winner. Peltier and package-scale cooling have also been proposed as a lower cost/maintenance alternative to He cooling but when multiplied by the quantity required can still carve a significant chunk of the budget. Additionally, cooling …

Probabilistic Model-Based Diagnosis: An Electrical Power System Case Study, Ole J. Mengshoel, Mark Chavira, Keith Cascio, Adnan Darwiche, Scott Poll, Serdar Uckun
Ole J Mengshoel
We present in this paper a case study of the probabilistic approach to model-based diagnosis. Here, the diagnosed system is a real-world electrical power system (EPS), i.e., the Advanced Diagnstic and Prognostic Testbed (ADAPT) located at the NASA Ames Research Center. Our probabilistic approach is formally well founded and based on Bayesian networks (BNs) and arithmetic circuits (ACs). We pay special attention to meeting two of the main challenges often associated with real-world application of model-based diagnosis technologies: model development and real-time reasoning. To address the challenge of model development, we develop a systematic approach to representing EPSs as BNs, …

Dr. Et-touhami Es-sebbar
Following a first study on a late afterglow in flowing pure nitrogen post discharge, we report new two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF) measurements of the absolute ground-state atomic nitrogen density N(4S) and investigate the influence of methane introduced downstream from the discharge by varying the CH4 mixing ratio from 0% up to 50%. The N (4S) maximum density is about 2.2 × 1015 cm−3 in pure N2 for a residence time of 22 ms and does not change significantly for methane mixing ratio up to ~15%, while above, a drastic decrease is observed. The influence of the residence time has …

The resonance behavior of localized surface plasmons in silver and gold nanoparticles was studied in the visible and near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Arrays of nano-sized gold (Au) and silver (Ag) particles with different properties were produced with electron-beam lithography technique over glass substrates. The effect of the particle size, shape variations, period, thickness, metal type, substrate type and sulfidation were studied via transmission and reflectance measurements. The results are compared with the theoretical calculations based on the DDA simulations performed by software developed in this study. We propose a new intensity modulation technique based on localized surface plasmons …

The purpose of the present work is the experimental and numerical study of the absolute ground-state nitrogen atoms density N(4S) in the late afterglow of a pure N2 flowing microwave discharge in which different amounts of CH4 have been injected at 25 cm downstream from the nitrogen discharge. The absolute N(4S) concentrations have been measured using Two-photon Absorption Laser-Induced Fluorescence (TALIF), while a detailed kinetic model has been developed to simulate both the discharge and the post-discharge regions. Theoretical predictions are then compared to experimental measurements.

Dr. Et-touhami Es-sebbar
Methane is, together with N2, the main precursor of Titan’s atmospheric chemistry. In our laboratory, we are currently developing a program of laboratory simulations of Titan’s atmosphere, where methane is intended to be dissociated by multiphotonic photolysis at 248 nm. A preliminary study has shown that multiphotonic absorption of methane at 248 nm is efficient and leads to the production of hydrocarbons such as C2H2 (Romanzin et al., 2008). Yet, at this wavelength, little is known about the branching ratios of the hydrocarbon radicals (CH3, CH2 and CH) and their following photochemistry. This paper thus aims at investigating methane photochemistry …

Wideband Limiter Fits Sot-323 Pack, Chin-Leong Lim
Chin-Leong Lim
Limiters protect wireless receiver front-ends from damage due to signal overload. The Schottky-PIN limiter is more protective than the self-biased PIN limiter because the former's limiting threshold is ~10 dB lower. Present implementation of the Schottky-PIN limiter use separate PIN and Schottky diodes. Additionally, some prior knowledge is necessary to select the correct PIN and Schottky diodes for limiter service. To miniaturize the limiter and to simplify the diode selection process, we combined a pair of limiter-optimized PIN and Schottky diodes into a compact and low-cost SOT-323 package. This paper describes the design, fabrication and experimental validation of the industry's …

Using synchrotron radiation as a tunable VUV light source, we have measured, for the first time, the absolute photoabsorption cross sections of HC5N with a spectral resolution of 0.05 nm in the region between 80 and 205 nm from 233 to 298 K. The measured cross sections are used to predict the HC5N photodestruction rate in the solar system and to model a transmission spectrum in Titan's atmosphere. Comparing the latter with that acquired by the Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph on board the Cassini spacecraft, we have determined an upper limit of 2.7 × 10−5 on the HC5N abundance at 1100 …
