Analysis And Improvement Of Multiple Optimal Learning Factors For Feed-Forward Networks, Praveen Jesudhas Jan 2010

Analysis And Improvement Of Multiple Optimal Learning Factors For Feed-Forward Networks, Praveen Jesudhas

Electrical Engineering Theses

The effects of transforming the net function vector in the Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) are analyzed. The use of optimal diagonal transformation matrices on the net function vector is proved to be equivalent to training the MLP using multiple optimal learning factors (MOLF). A method for linearly compressing large ill-conditioned MOLF Hessian matrices into smaller well-conditioned ones is developed. This compression approach is shown to be equivalent to using several hidden units per learning factor. The technique is extended to large networks. In simulations, the proposed algorithm performs almost as well as the Levenberg Marquardt (LM) algorithm with the computational complexity …

The Self-Heating Effects Of Bipolar Juction Transistors On The Functionality Of A Current Feedback Amplifier, Xuesong Xie Jan 2010

The Self-Heating Effects Of Bipolar Juction Transistors On The Functionality Of A Current Feedback Amplifier, Xuesong Xie

Electrical Engineering Dissertations

Self-heating effects strongly affect the performance of modern silicon-on-insulator (SOI) bipolar junction transistors. This research work does an extensive analysis of self-heating effects on large-signal behavior, small-signal behavior and transient operation of bipolar junction transistors. The two mechanisms in which device temperature affects large-signal behavior of a BJT transistor are investigated, i.e. the common-emitter (CE) configuration is to be driven by a constant base-emitter voltage and a constant base current. It is shown that the output characteristic of a BJT transistor is less sensitive to self-heating under a fixed base current than a fixed base-emitter voltage. A simple method of …

Position Sensorless Control Of A Magnetically Levitated (Maglev) System, Esteban Ricardo Noboa Jan 2010

Position Sensorless Control Of A Magnetically Levitated (Maglev) System, Esteban Ricardo Noboa

Electrical Engineering Dissertations

The main focus of this investigation is the development and implementation of a sensorless position estimation method and hysteresis position controller for a laboratory-based Maglev system. The proposed estimation method and controller are first validated through modeling and simulation. This sensorless scheme makes use of the maglev system's magnetic signature, namely, its inductance and requires only active phase current measurements. These measurements are then used along with the phase voltage equation to estimate position information that is in a one-to-one correspondence with the system's inductance. The theoretical aspects of the sensorless scheme are described. Finite element analysis (FEA) as well …

Convert Uhf Rfid Tag From Passive To Semi-Passive Tag Using External Power Sources, Tanvi Mehta Jan 2010

Convert Uhf Rfid Tag From Passive To Semi-Passive Tag Using External Power Sources, Tanvi Mehta

Electrical Engineering Theses

In this thesis, I present novel circuit designs that convert a passive radio frequency identification (RFID) tag into a semi-passive RFID tag. Passive RFID tags are relatively inexpensive to purchase and to integrate into objects and devices. However, in some environments and on some objects the performance of the pure passive tags is not sufficient for the intended applications. A semi-passive tag, in comparison to a pure passive tag, has significantly greater communication range since the semi-passive tag derives its operational power from an on-tag power source instead of just from an interrogator's communication signal. As a result, semi-passive tags …

Capacitive Strain Sensors For Measurement Of Large Strain For Structural Health Monitoring, Clement Jacob

Electrical Engineering Theses

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is increasingly used to replace time based management, with a more efficient Condition Based Maintenance (CBM). The traditional scheme of scheduling down time for aircraft inspection or periodic evaluation of civil infrastructure costs millions of dollars in maintenance due to either downtime or lack of timely maintenance. SHM involves periodic, real time sampling and analysis of signals, from onboard sensors like accelerometer, pressure, strain or acoustic sensors to determine the condition of the structure. This can be used to carry out immediate repairs as well as predict failure. We report the development of a new high …

Neuro Adaptive Control For Aerospace And Distributed Systems, Abhijit Das

Electrical Engineering Dissertations

Nonlinear and adaptive control is generally considered one of the most effective techniques for stabilizing complex nonlinear systems, where linear control techniques may fail completely. Thousands of research papers are published on either theory or applications of nonlinear and adaptive control. But often one obvious question arises how to implement these techniques in real life model? The best answer that one can think of is to develop simple nonlinear control laws which are easy to implement. Moreover for controlling multi-agent systems, it is often required to distribute the control laws based on limited information available among the agents. This research …
