A Deep Learning Framework For Blockage Mitigation In Mmwave Wireless, Ahmed Hazaa Almutairi
A Deep Learning Framework For Blockage Mitigation In Mmwave Wireless, Ahmed Hazaa Almutairi
Dissertations and Theses
Millimeter-Wave (mmWave) communication is a key technology to enable next generation wireless systems. However, mmWave systems are highly susceptible to blockages, which can lead to a substantial decrease in signal strength at the receiver. Identifying blockages and mitigating them is thus a key challenge to achieve next generation wireless technology goals, such as enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communication (URLLC). This thesis proposes several deep learning (DL) frameworks for mmWave wireless blockage detection, mitigation, and duration prediction. First, we propose a DL framework to address the problem of identifying whether the mmWave wireless channel between two devices …

Mmwave Rat Optimization: Mac Layer Initial Access Design And Transport Layer Integration, Suresh Srinivasan
Dissertations and Theses
MmWave Radio Access Technology (RAT) is a promising technology for wireless communication due its large bandwidth and is already being deployed in 5G cellular and emerging WiFi technologies. MmWave systems use highly directional beams with narrow beamwidths to overcome the high path loss associated with their frequency bands. A mmWave radio can be used either in a standalone mode (where all radios use the same technology) or simultaneously with other technologies such as LTE and low frequency WiFi in a communication mode commonly referred to as integrated mode. This thesis proposes two methods to optimize mmWave RAT performance in both …

Impact Of Primary User Activity On The Performance Of Energy-Based Spectrum Sensing In Cognitive Radio Systems, Sara L. Macdonald
Impact Of Primary User Activity On The Performance Of Energy-Based Spectrum Sensing In Cognitive Radio Systems, Sara L. Macdonald
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Increasing numbers of wireless devices and mobile data requirements have led to a spectrum shortage. However spectrum utilization percentages are often low due to the current static spectrum allocation process where primary users (PUs) are given exclusive use to spectrum. Several mechanisms to increase spectrum utilization have been proposed including opportunistic spectrum access (OSA). Cognitive Radio (CR) is an emerging concept in wireless communication systems that aims to enable OSA in licensed frequencies by secondary users (SUs). CR systems are expected to sense the spectrum in order to determine if the PU is transmitting. Therefore OSA performance relies on the …

A Simulation Study Of Convergence Speed For Distributed Codeword Adaptation Algorithms In Cdma Wireless Systems, Sahana Maharjan
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis we present a side-by-side comparison of interference avoidance (IA) algorithms for distributed codeword adaptation in Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) systems. In CDMA systems, the interference is determined by the values of the cross-correlation of codewords assigned to users, and various algorithms can be used for codeword optimization. The IA algorithms for codeword adaptation considered are the eigen-algorithm, the Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) update, and the adaptive IA algorithm, for which we investigate convergence speed using the extensive simulations of several uplink CDMA system scenarios. The results of this thesis were presented at the Fourth IEEE …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Future generations of wireless systems will employ versatile transmitters and receivers based on software defined radios that are capable of adapting in response to changes in the operating environment to meet the specified quality of service requirements. In adaptive wireless systems, transmitters use feedback from the receiver to update characteristics of the transmitted signal to changing patterns of interference. In this thesis, the performance of transmitter adaptation algorithms with limited feedback and the system performance as a function in which the interference information is quantized for transmission over the feedback channel are analyzed. The results of this thesis were presented …
Extending The Network Life Time In Wsn Using Energy Efficient Algorithm, Venkata Sesha Sai Koundinya Goparaju
Extending The Network Life Time In Wsn Using Energy Efficient Algorithm, Venkata Sesha Sai Koundinya Goparaju
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Wireless Sensor networks have many potential applications. These wireless sensor networks necessitate specific design requirements of which energy efficiency is vital. The sensor networks consist of sensor nodes that operate on battery power, and replacement of these batteries is very often a strenuous task, since networks are deployed in areas where the act of replacing the batteries proves impractical.
With the limited available energy of sensor nodes, most of the energy is drained during communication. An energy efficient routing algorithm can prolong the lifetime of the network by gradually depleting the nodes in the network. Many of the routing protocols …

Scripted Mobile Network Routing In A Contested Environment, Anthony R. Otto
Scripted Mobile Network Routing In A Contested Environment, Anthony R. Otto
Theses and Dissertations
Mobile wireless network protocols currently run on optimistic routing algorithms, adjusting node connectivity only when the chosen connectivity metrics, such as signal strength, pass beyond minimum thresholds. Optimistic routing has several weaknesses. Optimistic routing suffers from increased network overhead during increased frequency of node movement and increased node density per area, and optimistic routing also suffers from non-optimistic access change for individual nodes. The overall communication throughput of a network may be increased if the network topology change is scripted; a scripted plan can allow messages to travel along a more efficient topological path while creating less topology control traffic. …

The U.S. Air Force is interested in developing a standard ad hoc framework using "heavy" aircraft to route data across large regions. The Zone Routing Protocol (ZRP) has the potential to provide seamless large-scale routing for DOD under the Joint Tactical Radio System program. The goal of this study is to determine if there is a difference between routing protocol performance when operating in a large-area MANET with high-speed mobile nodes. This study analyzes MANET performance when using reactive, proactive, and hybrid routing protocols, specifically AODV, DYMO, Fisheye, and ZRP. This analysis compares the performance of the four routing protocols …
On-Demand Key Distribution For Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Daniel F. Graham
On-Demand Key Distribution For Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Daniel F. Graham
Theses and Dissertations
Mobile ad-hoc networks offer dynamic portable communication with little or no infrastructure. While this has many benefits, there are additional shortcomings specific to wireless communication that must be addressed. This research proposes gossip-based on-demand key distribution as a means to provide data encryption for mobile ad-hoc networks. This technique uses message keys to avoid encrypting and decrypting a message at every node. Other optimizations used include secure channel caching and joint rekey messages. The use of gossip makes the scheme robust to node failure. Experimental results show only a 15% increase in end-to-end delay with a node failure rate of …
Overcoming Tcp Degradation In The Presence Of Multiple Intermittent Link Failures Utilizing Intermediate Buffering, Duane F. Harmon
Overcoming Tcp Degradation In The Presence Of Multiple Intermittent Link Failures Utilizing Intermediate Buffering, Duane F. Harmon
Theses and Dissertations
It is well documented that assumptions made in the popular Transmission Control Protocol's (TCP) development, while essential in the highly reliable wired environment, are incompatible with today's wireless network realities in what we refer to as a challenged environment. Challenged environments severely degrade the capability of TCP to establish and maintain a communication connection with reasonable throughput. This thesis proposes and implements an intermediate buffering scheme, implemented at the transport layer, which serves as a TCP helper protocol for use in network routing equipment to overcome short and bursty, but regular, link failures. Moreover, the implementation requires no modifications to …

This paper considers the security of sensor network applications. Our approach creates multicast regions that use symmetric key cryptography for communications. Each multicast region contains a single keyserver that is used to perform key management and maintain the integrity of a multicast region. Communications between two multicast regions is performed by nodes that belong to both regions. To ease the network management burden, it is desirable for the networks to self-organize into regions and dynamically select their keyservers. This paper shows how to determine the number of keyservers (k) to use and the size in the number of hops (h) …

Fault Modeling In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ahmed A. Elmiligui
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A large amount of research has been done in the area of wireless sensor networks (WSN), but not much work has been done in modeling the fault tolerance and reliability of these networks. In this thesis, the fault tolerance of a WSN to node failures is studied and an analytical reliability model of the network is derived. A valid reliability model of a network could reveal an estimate of the network's performance before it is deployed.
A wireless sensor network was modeled as a k-out-of-n system and a generic fault tolerant framework for the network in terms of node losses …

Fault Arrangements And Their Effect On The Performance Of Wireless Sensor Networks, Dwayne Sayone Blai
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Wireless sensor networks face many reliability challenges. The networks are deployed in open, hostile environments, making them easily susceptible to network failure. As a result, there are countless faults that can occur in sensor networks, from component failure to outside attacks. Outside attacks take place when an adversary gains control over a node or set of nodes in the network. Outside attackers can destroy a network in numerous ways such as random attacks, clustering attacks, search-based attacks, etc. The method and strategy used in each of these attacks directly affects the network's reliability. Understanding how these adversaries are positioned is …
The Reliability Of The Computer Communication Networks Including Mobile Nodes, Sahin Yasar
The Reliability Of The Computer Communication Networks Including Mobile Nodes, Sahin Yasar
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The wireless computer networks have an uncertainty in their structures aside from their big advantages for the users. The environmental conditions, changing locations of the mobile hosts and the changing components in the system can easily affect their reliability. In order to know a system capability performing its functions, keep the reliability at a certain level and/or detect the deficiency of the system, it is necessary to analyze the reliability of a computer communication network including the wired and wireless parts. But the above reasons also make the analysis and a unique solution difficult so a set of algorithms is …
Supplementing An Ad-Hoc Wireless Network Routing Protocol With Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) Tags, Leroy S. Willemsen
Supplementing An Ad-Hoc Wireless Network Routing Protocol With Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) Tags, Leroy S. Willemsen
Theses and Dissertations
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have a broad and varied range of applications, yet all of these are limited by the resources available to the sensor nodes that make up the WSN. The most significant resource is energy. A WSN may be deployed to an inhospitable or unreachable area, leaving it with a non-replenishable power source. This research examines a way of reducing energy consumption by augmenting the nodes with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags that contain routing information. It was expected that RFID tags would reduce the network throughput, the ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) routing traffic sent, and …

Mobility-Pattern Based Localization Update Algorithm For Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Yacoub Al-Laho
Mobility-Pattern Based Localization Update Algorithm For Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Yacoub Al-Laho
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In mobile wireless sensor networks, sensors move in the monitored area at any direction and speed. Unlike many other networking hosts, sensor nodes do not have global addresses. They are often identified by using a location-based addressing scheme. Therefore, it is important to have the knowledge of the sensor location indicating where the data came from. In this thesis, three localization update algorithms were designed, Specifically, a sensor movement is divided into three states: Pause, Linear, and Random. Each state adopts different localization update algorithm. Since complex movement involves different mobility patterns, a state transition model is developed to …

Device Discovery In Frequency Hopping Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Brian S. Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
This research develops a method for efficient discovery of wireless devices for a frequency hopping spread spectrum, synchronous, ad hoc network comprised of clustered sub-networks. The Bluetooth wireless protocol serves as the reference protocol. The development of a discovery, or outreach, method for scatternets requires the characterization of performance metrics of Bluetooth piconets, many of which are unavailable in literature. Precise analytical models characterizing the interference caused to Bluetooth network traffic by inquiring devices, the probability mass function of packet error rates between arbitrary pairs of Bluetooth networks, and Bluetooth discovery time distribution are developed. Based on the characterized performance …
Address Assignment In Ad-Hoc Networks, John Paul O'Grady
Address Assignment In Ad-Hoc Networks, John Paul O'Grady
Theses
A wireless ad-hoc network is a collection of autonomous nodes or terminals that communicate with each other by forming a multi-hop radio network and maintaining connectivity in a decentralised manner. In an ad hoc network routing is used to find and maintain a path through the network. Routing requires each node to have a unique identifier, to ensure that packets sent to a particular node reach their intended destination. Most ad-hoc routing protocols assume that a node already has an address prior to its entry into a network and so the issue of address assignment is largely ignored. This however …
