Developing A Rapid Urban Forest Assessment System For Sustainable City Greenification, Daniel Gonzalez
Developing A Rapid Urban Forest Assessment System For Sustainable City Greenification, Daniel Gonzalez
Master's Theses
This thesis presents the Rapid Urban Forest Assessment (RUFA) system, a web-based platform that integrates urban tree inventories and aerial tree detection to assess forest health across California’s census-designated places. RUFA combines inventoried tree records with coordinates detected from high-resolution multispectral imagery using convolutional neural networks, then computes a composite RUFA Score from four metrics: canopy cover percentage, trees per capita, tree diversity (TD-50), and tree evenness. The thesis addresses two engineering challenges in building the dashboard: querying and aggregating over seven million tree records in real time, and rendering spatial summaries at multiple zoom levels without recomputing cluster assignments …
Custom Data Acquisition System For The Cal Poly Racing Baja Team, Joe Keenan
Custom Data Acquisition System For The Cal Poly Racing Baja Team, Joe Keenan
Computer Engineering
The Cal Poly Racing Baja team relies on data to analyze and improve upon various vehicle systems in an off-road style vehicle. In order to accomplish this, some data logging or data acquisition (DAQ) is required to collect the data. This project explores the use of a controller area network with flexible data rate (CAN FD) bus along with a custom file format to store data on an SD card that can be made easily acceptable to engineers on the team.
Implementation Of Area-Based Aggregation On Multivariate Continuous Uncertain Data, Rahul Nair
Implementation Of Area-Based Aggregation On Multivariate Continuous Uncertain Data, Rahul Nair
Master's Theses
Uncertain data is incredibly widespread - from sensor data to AI-based learned information, there exists a need to associate information with a certain probability of its veracity. Traditional relational databases lack a built-in functionality to support uncertain data, instead assigning them boilerplate values. Probabilistic databases tackle this problem by assigning non-deterministic data with an associated, often discrete, probability. Variants of probabilistic databases, namely continuous uncertain databases, are used to better model data represented through ranges and distributions. This is especially applicable with sensor-based geographic data as most commercial equipment contains some inherent margin of error.
While uncertain and probabilistic databases …
Optimizing Resume Authenticity And Ats Compatibility With Llm Feedback Integration, Katie He, Justin Lau
Optimizing Resume Authenticity And Ats Compatibility With Llm Feedback Integration, Katie He, Justin Lau
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Resume generation using Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT is becoming increasingly popular for automating the creation of customized resumes, but significant user modification is often required before submission. Common issues include poor alignment with job descriptions, inflated qualifications, and lack of authenticity, which undermine the effectiveness of LLM-generated resumes. This project addresses these challenges by integrating feedback from Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to guide LLMs in producing resumes that accurately reflect an applicant’s qualifications and better align with job-specific requirements. By optimizing the model's output through ATS feedback, the project aims to create more authentic, tailored, and ATS-compatible resumes, …
Building A Benchmark For Industrial Iot Application, Pranay K. Tiru, Soma Tummala
Building A Benchmark For Industrial Iot Application, Pranay K. Tiru, Soma Tummala
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
In this project, we have developed a rather robust means of processing and displaying large sums of IoT data using several cutting-edge, industry-standard technologies. Our data pipeline integrates physical sensors that send various environmental data like temperature, humidity, and pressure. Once created, the data is then collected at an MQTT broker, streamed through a Kafka cluster, processed within a Spark Cluster, and stored in a Cassandra database.
In order to test the rigidity of the pipeline, we also created virtual sensors. This allowed us to send an immense amount of data, which wasn’t necessarily feasible with just the physical sensors. …

Shelfaware: Accelerating Collaborative Awareness With Shelf Crdt, John C. Waidhofer
Master's Theses
Collaboration has become a key feature of modern software, allowing teams to work together effectively in real-time while in different locations. In order for a user to communicate their intention to several distributed peers, computing devices must exchange high-frequency updates with transient metadata like mouse position, text range highlights, and temporary comments. Current peer-to-peer awareness solutions have high time and space complexity due to the ever-expanding logs that each client must maintain in order to ensure robust collaboration in eventually consistent environments. This paper proposes an awareness Conflict-Free Replicated Data Type (CRDT) library that provides the tooling to support an …

Solar farms like the Gold Tree Solar Farm at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo have difficulty delivering a consistent level of power output. Cloudy days can trigger a significant drop in the utility of a farm’s solar panels, and an unexpected loss of power from the farm could potentially unbalance the electrical grid. Being able to predict these power output drops in advance could provide valuable time to prepare a grid and keep it stable. Furthermore, with modern data analysis methods such as machine learning, these predictions are becoming more and more accurate – given a sufficient data set. The …

Wine Sampler, Lance L. Litten
Computer Engineering
Quality testing is an important part of the wine industry. Without proper quality control, thousands of dollars could be wasted on bottling and recalling hundreds of gallons of wine. Due to this, labs are set up that collect wine samples from the tanks in a wine production plant and test them. A big part of this testing is determining exactly what tanks need to be tested and what tanks are at risk. My project aims to help automate this task by collecting data from the tanks wirelessly and keeping track of simple indicators such as pH and temperature. Automating this …
A Database For Indexable Carbide Inserts, Andrew Yoder
A Database For Indexable Carbide Inserts, Andrew Yoder
Computer Engineering
The indexable inserts project is a collaborative effort to aggregate into a single database as many indexable carbide inserts from as many manufacturers as possible. Inserts are generally labeled with a part number following a specific standard determined by shapes and measurements, however specifications for certain aspects of carbide inserts—such as which materials they can cut—can vary by manufacturer. There currently is not a way to search a comprehensive database containing tools from multiple manufacturers for a handful of inserts that would satisfy some necessary parameters, making finding the correct tool in a shop a much more time-consuming process than …
Relevance Analysis For Document Retrieval, Eric Labouve
Relevance Analysis For Document Retrieval, Eric Labouve
Master's Theses
Document retrieval systems recover documents from a dataset and order them according to their perceived relevance to a user’s search query. This is a difficult task for machines to accomplish because there exists a semantic gap between the meaning of the terms in a user’s literal query and a user’s true intentions. Even with this ambiguity that arises with a lack of context, users still expect that the set of documents returned by a search engine is both highly relevant to their query and properly ordered. The focus of this thesis is on document retrieval systems that explore methods of …

Oversubscribing Inotify On Embedded Platforms, Donald Percivalle, Scott Vanderlind
Computer Engineering
For most computers running the popular Linux operating system, the inte- grated kernel component inotify provides adequate functionality for monitor- ing changes to files present on the filesystem. However, for certain embedded platforms where resources are very limited and filesystems are very populated (like network attached storage (NAS) devices), inotify may not have enough resources to provide watchers for every file. This results in applications missing change notifications for files they have watched. This paper explores methods for using inotify most effectively on embedded systems by leveraging more la- tent storage. Benefits of this include a reduction in dropped notifications …
Rest Api To Access And Manage Geospatial Pipeline Integrity Data, Alexandra Michelle Francis
Rest Api To Access And Manage Geospatial Pipeline Integrity Data, Alexandra Michelle Francis
Master's Theses
Today’s economy and infrastructure is dependent on raw natural resources, like crude oil and natural gases, that are optimally transported through a net- work of hundreds of thousands of miles of pipelines throughout America[28]. A damaged pipe can negatively a↵ect thousands of homes and businesses so it is vital that they are monitored and quickly repaired[1]. Ideally, pipeline operators are able to detect damages before they occur, but ensuring the in- tegrity of the vast amount of pipes is unrealistic and would take an impractical amount of time and manpower[1].
Natural disasters, like earthquakes, as well as construction are just …

Raytheon is a defense contracting company with an electronic warfare division that is developing a radio frequency signal triangulation system. Part of the focus in improving this technology is the need for accurate and real time locational knowledge of the signal receivers, which are located at the tips of aircraft wings. Due to turbulence during flight, the fluttering motion of the wings alter the distance and angle relationships of the two receivers and add noise to the received signal data, which negatively affect the triangulation estimates. To mitigate this error caused by the wing flutter, Raytheon is developing a software …
