Sickle cell disease is a severe hereditary disease caused by an abnormality of the red blood cells. The current therapeutic decision-making process applied to sickle cell disease includes monitoring a patient’s symptoms and complications and then adjusting the treatment accordingly. This process is time-consuming, which might result in serious consequences for patients’ lives and could lead to irreversible disease complications. Artificial intelligence, specifically machine learning, is a powerful technique that has been used to support medical decisions. This paper aims to review the recently developed machine learning models designed to interpret medical data regarding sickle cell disease. To propose an …

A Supporting Tool For Requirements Prioritization Process In Agile Software Development, Ramdan Mowad, Khaled Abdelazim Muhammad, Essam Elfakharany
Future Computing and Informatics Journal
Requirements engineering is a crucial phase of software engineering, and requirements prioritization is an essential stage of requirements engineering particularly in agile software development. Requirements prioritization goals at eliciting which requirements of software need to be covered in a particular release. The key point is which requirement will be selected in the next iteration and which one will be delayed to other iterations for minimizing risk during development and meeting stakeholders’ needs. There are many existing techniques for requirement prioritization, but most of these techniques do not cover continuous growth, change of requirements, and requirements dependencies. The prioritization techniques need …

Formalization approaches of user interface design (UID) in conjunction with model driven techniques aim to improve the usability in terms of conformity to standards or style guides and to leverage code generation of interactive software systems, so that various UI platforms for web, desktop or mobile Applications are supported. Because large parts of the UI are described platform independent instead of platform dependent implementations, re-usability of the UI concept is also improved. However, UI formalization requires the usage of a formal UI description language and a higher level of abstractness compared to concrete UI code. These languages need to be …

Master of Science in Computer Science Theses
While the application of crowdsourcing has increased over the years, the technology experiences various issues during implementation. Examples of some of the issues that affect crowdsourcing include task assignment, profit maximizations, as well as time window issues. In some instances addressing some of the issues results in the other issues being overlooked. An example is when assigning tasks to workers, the profits of the workers might not be considered and this ends up affecting the profit maximization aspect. Various algorithms have been proposed to address the task assignment, profit maximizations, and time window issues. However, these algorithms address the issues …

Fault Diagnosability Of Regular Graphs, Mei-Mei Gu, Rong-Xia Hao, Eddie Cheng
Fault Diagnosability Of Regular Graphs, Mei-Mei Gu, Rong-Xia Hao, Eddie Cheng
Theory & Applications of Graphs
An interconnection network's diagnosability is an important measure of its self-diagnostic capability. In 2012, Peng et al. proposed a measure for fault diagnosis of the network, namely, the h-good-neighbor conditional diagnosability, which requires that every fault-free node has at least h fault-free neighbors. There are two well-known diagnostic models, PMC model and MM* model. The h-good-neighbor diagnosability under the PMC (resp. MM*) model of a graph G, denoted by thPMC(G) (resp. thMM*(G)), is the maximum value of t such that G is h-good-neighbor t-diagnosable under the PMC (resp. MM*) …

Blockchain Based Communication Architectures With Applications To Private Security Networks, Ashley N. Mayle
Blockchain Based Communication Architectures With Applications To Private Security Networks, Ashley N. Mayle
Computer Science ETDs
Existing communication protocols in security networks are highly centralized. While this naively makes the controls easier to physically secure, external actors require fewer resources to disrupt the system because there are fewer points in the system can be interrupted without the entire system failing. We present a solution to this problem using a proof-of-work-based blockchain implementation built on MultiChain. We construct a test-bed network containing visual imagers and microwave sensor information. These data types are ubiquitous in perimeter security systems and allow a realistic representation of a real-world network architecture. The cameras in this system use an object detection algorithm …

Poland’S Challenge To Eu Directive 2019/790: Standing Up To The Destruction Of European Freedom Of Expression, Michaela Cloutier
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
In 2019, the European Parliament and Council passed Directive 2019/790. The Directive’s passage marked the end of a fouryear- long legislative attempt to impose more liability for copyright violations on Online Service Providers, an effort which was controversial from the start. Online Service Providers fear that the 2019 Directive, especially its Article 17, will completely change the structure of liability on the Internet, forcing providers to adopt expensive content filtering systems. Free speech advocates fear that ineffective filtering technology will infringe upon Internet users’ rights to express themselves, and legal scholars have pointed out the Directive’s inconsistency with prior European …
The Entanglement Of Influential Technology Channels In Practice And Design, Ciarán O'Leary

Design for academic practice is an important phenomenon in Higher Education. This is the practice through which informal, non-professional designers operating in a variety of roles in academic institutions carry out the design of systems, resources, activities and processes that are intended to enhance academic practice. Despite its importance, the area has not received sufficient attention in studies of academic practice, quality enhancement and digital transformation. This thesis argues that the absence of insight into how designers for academic practice engage with digital technology in their design practice contributes to the mismatch between the ambitions for digital transformation in higher …

Exploring The Efficacy Of Transfer Learning In Mining Image‑Based Software Artifacts, Natalie Best, Jordan Ott, Erik J. Linstead
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Background
Transfer learning allows us to train deep architectures requiring a large number of learned parameters, even if the amount of available data is limited, by leveraging existing models previously trained for another task. In previous attempts to classify image-based software artifacts in the absence of big data, it was noted that standard off-the-shelf deep architectures such as VGG could not be utilized due to their large parameter space and therefore had to be replaced by customized architectures with fewer layers. This proves to be challenging to empirical software engineers who would like to make use of existing architectures without …
