A Virtual-Reality-Based Dental Simulator For Endodontics With Automated Formative Feedback, Yousef Salah Abo El Ela
A Virtual-Reality-Based Dental Simulator For Endodontics With Automated Formative Feedback, Yousef Salah Abo El Ela
Theses and Dissertations
Advancements in virtual reality (VR) and haptic technology are transforming the landscape of medical and dental education, offering new avenues for safe, immersive, and repeatable training experiences. Within dentistry, endodontics presents unique challenges for preclinical education due to anatomical complexity, limited access to extracted teeth, ethical concerns, and the shortcomings of conventional plastic models. Despite endodontics specific plastic teeth being available, they fall short of replicating the hardness of real extracted teeth, are relatively costly compared to generic plastic teeth, and are ultimately a disposable item which makes them inadequate as a sustainable long-term solution. Extracted teeth do a much …
Universal Systems Simulation Via Constraint Hypergraphs With Applications To Digital Twins, John Morris
Universal Systems Simulation Via Constraint Hypergraphs With Applications To Digital Twins, John Morris
All Dissertations
The characterization of systems encompasses a variety of modeling frameworks designed to capture specific behaviors and components of various system domains. Whatever the framework, the core elements of a system representation are the information of the system and a description of how that information is related. The relations in deterministic systems are functions, which, when composed to form executable processes, can be used to simulate system data. A declarative modeling framework is one that encodes mechanisms for preparing these simulations within the model structure, allowing an external agent to form the execution processes required for a given context. To date, …

Investigation Of The Influence Of Warhead Shape And Type Of Missile Weapon Material Counter-Training Tank Weapons Simulation Approach, Transisma Budiarta, Haris Puspito Buwono, Radhi Nurvian Amrullah
Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)
This study analyzes the effect of warhead shape and material variations on pressure, temperature, and lift on training missiles using CAD-based simulation methods. The variations of warhead shapes tested include flat, flat radius, and tapered, while the materials used are rubber, ABS, and PE. The simulation results show that the tapered warhead shape with PE material produces the lowest pressure (50.3 MPa) due to more efficient pressure release and low friction properties. Conversely, the Flat shape produces the highest pressure (69.1 MPa) on all materials due to flow stagnation. In terms of temperature, the Flat Radius warhead with PE and …
A Formal Simulation Model For Discrete Rate Simulation, Thomas J. Tracey
A Formal Simulation Model For Discrete Rate Simulation, Thomas J. Tracey
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Simulation is an essential tool for virtualizing systems by creating a representative model of real or hypothetical systems and observing how they change over time. Two predominant simulation paradigms include Discrete Event Simulation (DES) and Continuous Simulation, which both have their strengths and weaknesses. DES does not handle continuous state variables, while continuous simulation handles continuous state variables but encounters errors where these variables have discrete changes in their behavior. This difficulty between the two predominant simulation paradigms prompted the creation of a new simulation paradigm to cover this gap: Discrete Rate Simulation (DRS). DRS as a simulation paradigm focuses …
Testing Autonomy: Hybrid Scenario Synthesis, Benjamin E. Hargis
Testing Autonomy: Hybrid Scenario Synthesis, Benjamin E. Hargis
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Hybrid Scenario Synthesis merges static and adaptive techniques to generate interactions that rigorously assess autonomous performance under multi-factor testing. Multifactor scenarios employ multiple individual stimuli to rigorously test system responses in complex settings. Static Scenario Testing involves scripted test cases that simulate specific conditions or events. These scenarios represent typical situations an autonomous system might encounter. The benefits of static testing include early defect detection, focused review by trained experts, and efficiency. In multi-factor scenarios, however, statically defined scenario factors are not able to guarantee meaningful interactions as the presence of other factors may invalidate underlying assumptions regarding the system …

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)
To obtain the desired results in the manufacturing process, especially the bending process, the occurrence of springback must be reduced. The effective strain rate must be increased to predict the increase in material. This study uses a simulation method to determine the influence of material type and compressive speed variation on spring back and effective strain rate. This study uses 3 kinds of materials: JIS SPHD, JIS A1100 BE, and JIS SN400A, and speed variations, namely: 90 mm/s, 105 mm/s, and 120 mm/s. This study shows that JIS SN400A material has the smallest springback value compared to JIS A1100 BE …

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)
This study explores the enhancement of Kevlar fabric’s ballistic performance through impregnation with Shear Thickening Fluid (STF) for potential application in soft body armor. The experimental approach often fails to elucidate mechanical phenomena critical for the development of lightweight and high-strength body armor designs. To address this limitation, the finite element method, specifically using ANSYS/LS-DYNA R.13, was employed for a comprehensive analysis. The simulation aimed to evaluate the impact of STF on Kevlar fabric by assessing projectile velocity, force exerted by the projectile onto the fabric, displacement, stress distribution, and fabric failure mechanisms. Kevlar yarn was modeled as a shell …

Infrastructure maintenance and rehabilitation projects involve activities scattered over a large geographical area (e.g., scattered road segments maintenance, telecom towers maintenance program, etc.). Planning such projects require a resource-based approach that accounts for the implications of resource mobility between activities’ locations in terms of time & cost. Existing scheduling techniques fall short of addressing the unique challenges of the scattered nature of these projects in combination with organization's limited resources availability. To address this need, this research presents a resources-based planning framework for infrastructure maintenance and rehabilitation scattered projects with the objective of enhancing resources utilization achieving time and cost …
Statistical Approach To Quantifying Interceptability Of Interaction Scenarios For Testing Autonomous Surface Vessels, Benjamin E. Hargis, Yiannis E. Papelis
Statistical Approach To Quantifying Interceptability Of Interaction Scenarios For Testing Autonomous Surface Vessels, Benjamin E. Hargis, Yiannis E. Papelis
Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
This paper presents a probabilistic approach to quantifying interceptability of an interaction scenario designed to test collision avoidance of autonomous navigation algorithms. Interceptability is one of many measures to determine the complexity or difficulty of an interaction scenario. This approach uses a combined probability model of capability and intent to create a predicted position probability map for the system under test. Then, intercept-ability is quantified by determining the overlap between the system under test probability map and the intruder’s capability model. The approach is general; however, a demonstration is provided using kinematic capability models and an odometry-based intent model.

Failures in the oil and gas pipeline system are conditions that must be avoided and anticipated because the losses due to the failures can occur at a very high level. Internal corrosion is one of the significant causes of the failures in pipeline systems. In addition, this type of corrosion is due to the high content of carbon dioxide and other corrosive substances in crude oil and natural gas. Therefore, an optimal inspection scheduling system is required to prevent the possibility of pipeline failures due to corrosion and to avoid any overspending on the budget due to excessive inspection scheduling. …

Evaluating Driving Performance Of A Novel Behavior Planning Model On Connected Autonomous Vehicles, Keyur Shah
Evaluating Driving Performance Of A Novel Behavior Planning Model On Connected Autonomous Vehicles, Keyur Shah
Honors Scholar Theses
Many current algorithms and approaches in autonomous driving attempt to solve the "trajectory generation" or "trajectory following” problems: given a target behavior (e.g. stay in the current lane at the speed limit or change lane), what trajectory should the vehicle follow, and what inputs should the driving agent apply to the throttle and brake to achieve this trajectory? In this work, we instead focus on the “behavior planning” problem—specifically, should an autonomous vehicle change lane or keep lane given the current state of the system?
In addition, current theory mainly focuses on single-vehicle systems, where vehicles do not communicate with …

This involves identifying natural gestures to control basic functions of a vehicle, such as maneuvering and onboard equipment operation, and building simulations using the Unity game engine to investigate preferred use of those gestures. In addition to creating a realistic operating experience, human factors associated with limitations on physical hand motion and information management are also considered in the simulation development process. Testing with external participants using a recreational quadcopter simulation built in Unity was …
A Scalable, Chunk-Based Slicer For Cooperative 3d Printing, Jace J. Mcpherson
A Scalable, Chunk-Based Slicer For Cooperative 3d Printing, Jace J. Mcpherson
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cooperative 3D printing is an emerging technology that aims to increase the 3D printing speed and to overcome the size limit of the printable object by having multiple mobile 3D printers (printhead-carrying mobile robots) work together on a single print job on a factory floor. It differs from traditional layer-by-layer 3D printing due to requiring multiple mobile printers to work simultaneously without interfering with each other. Therefore, a new approach for slicing a digital model and generating commands for the mobile printers is needed, which has not been discussed in literature before. We propose a chunk-by-chunk based slicer that divides …
The 3d Abstract Tile Assembly Model Is Intrinsically Universal, Aaron Koch, Daniel Hader, Matthew J. Patitz
The 3d Abstract Tile Assembly Model Is Intrinsically Universal, Aaron Koch, Daniel Hader, Matthew J. Patitz
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
In this paper, we prove that the three-dimensional abstract Tile Assembly Model (3DaTAM) is intrinsically universal. This means that there is a universal tile set in the 3DaTAM which can be used to simulate any 3DaTAM system. This result adds to a body of work on the intrinsic universality of models of self-assembly, and is specifically motivated by a result in FOCS 2016 showing that any intrinsically universal tile set for the 2DaTAM requires nondeterminism (i.e. undirectedness) even when simulating directed systems. To prove our result we have not only designed, but also fully implemented what we believe to be …
State-Based Peridynamic Particle Method, Siavash Nikravesh Kazeroni
State-Based Peridynamic Particle Method, Siavash Nikravesh Kazeroni
Civil Engineering ETDs
In this study, a novel discrete Peridynamics framework called the “State-Based Peridynamic Particle Model (SPPM)” is introduced. In this approach, a solid body is simulated by neither solving differential equations nor integral equations; instead, the simulation is accomplished by directly solving discrete systems of equations using finite summations. SPPM is formulated for a random distribution of particles, hence, it can be considered as a meshfree method. The assumptions of continuity and homogeneity are not necessary for this approach. The SPPM is a generalization of the “State-Based Peridynamic Lattice Model (SPLM)”. In the SPLM formulation, for sake of simplicity and computational …

Calculation And Experimental Verification Of Longitudinal Spatial Hole Burning In High-Power Semiconductor Lasers, Ting Hao
Graduate Theses - Physics and Optical Engineering
Longitudinal spatial hole burning (LSHB) is believed to be one of the limiting factors in scaling the output power of high-power semiconductor lasers. In this work, a self-consistent simulation of LSHB was performed to investigate the non-uniform longitudinal photon density distribution, carrier density distribution, and gain distribution in a high-power semiconductor laser. The calculation is based on a modification to the semiconductor laser rate equations and solved using a finite difference approach, with Newton’s method employed to numerically solve the differential equations. The impact of LSHB on output power was analyzed with different parameters, including injection current, cavity length, and …

Fifty years ago computer science was just beginning to see common acceptance as a growing discipline and very few universities had a computer science department although other departments were utilizing computers and software to enhance their methodologies. We believe modeling and simulation (M&S) is on a similar path. Many other disciplines utilize M&S to enhance their methodologies but we also believe that M&S fundamentals can be essential in making better decisions by utilizing the appropriate model for the problem at hand, expanding the solution space through simulation, and understanding it through visualization and proper analyses. After our students learn these …

Polyurethane foam has been in use for some time in wheelchair seating systems as it offers good pressure relieving capabilities in most cases. However, little characterisation work has gone into seating foam materials by comparison with conventional elastomeric materials. Accurate material models could allow better prediction of foam in-service behaviour, which could potentially improve seating design practises. The objective of this work was to develop an approach for the validation of hyperelastic and viscoelastic material model parameters used to simulate polyurethane foam behaviour. Material parameters were identified from relevant test procedures and implemented in a Finite Element simulation of an …
